Freight traffic on Canada’s two largest rail networks could resume “within days,” Labour Minister Steve MacKinnon said Thursday after sending two labour disputes to binding arbitration.

Canadian National Railway Co. (CN) and Canadian Pacific Kansas City Ltd. (CPKC) locked out 9,300 engineers, conductors and yard workers just after midnight Thursday, capping months of increasingly tense and bitter labour negotiations.

Less than 17 hours after the lockout began, MacKinnon announced he’s using his powers as labour minister to step in.

Section 107 of the Canada Labour Code allows the government to refer a labour dispute to the Canada Industrial Relations Board (CIRB) to find a solution.

It’s all bullshit, of course.

Remember this report filed in October 2022? It included many recommendations made by the task force, to which we contributed.

On page 32, it states that ‘The Minister of Labour should urgently convene a council of experts to develop a new collaborative labour relations paradigm that would reduce the likelihood of strikes, threats of strikes, or lockouts that risk the operation or fluidity of the national transportation supply chain.’

Yet, absolutely nothing was done. Here’s a link to the report:

Blacklock’s- Adler Appointment Not Final

Broadcaster Charles Adler has not yet met legal requirements to become a Senator, authorities confirmed yesterday.

“An appointment to the Senate is made by summons from the Governor General under the Great Seal of Canada effective from the date of the writ of summons,” said Alison Korn, spokesperson for the Senate. The required legal notice typically takes two weeks from the issue of a news release.

Spokesperson Korn also confirmed under Senate Procedure And Practice no appointee may take a Senate seat without first signing the roll and taking an oath of allegiance to the King. “Yes, that is correct,” she said.

Both legal requirements must occur in person on a day when the Senate is in session. The Senate is currently on summer recess. It is scheduled to return Tuesday, September 17.

The Liberal Party of Canada is the latest major group to withdraw from the annual Ottawa Pride parade after organizers pledged solidarity with Palestinians in a statement earlier this month.

The federal political party’s decision comes as some embassies, civil servants, and local organizations pulled out of the event amid the controversy.

“In light of recent decisions made by the Capital Pride board, the Liberal Party has decided not to participate in Capital Pride events this year, and instead will host our own event to celebrate Ottawa’s 2SLGBTQI+ communities,” said Liberal Party spokesperson Parker Lund in a statement.

The wave of backlash began after Capital Pride issued a statement on Aug. 6 expressing solidarity(opens in a new tab) with Palestinians and accusing the Israeli government for “pinkwashing” the ongoing Israel-Hamas war by citing its LGBTQ2S+ inclusivity in an effort to “draw attention away” from its actions in Gaza.

The statement condemned, “in the strongest possible terms,” the Hamas terrorist attack on Oct. 7, 2023. It also pledged to “recognize the ongoing genocide against Palestinians” in opening remarks at 2024 Capital Pride Festival signature events, among other commitments.

While some organizations, such as Queers4Palestine Ottawa applauded Capital Pride for pledging to boycott Israeli companies, the statement drew considerable backlash from Jewish residents and advocacy groups such as B’nai Brith Canada and the Jewish Federation of Ottawa.

Liberal Senate appointee Charles Adler in a radio broadcast called Indigenous people uncivilized “boneheads” who should “get a job.” Adler’s remarks on Radio CJOB Winnipeg were so vulgar they prompted a formal complaint by the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs, records show.

“I don’t believe in living on reserves,” Adler said in his Adler On Line broadcast. “I don’t believe in ghettos. I don’t believe in federal government policy.”

Adler described First Nations as dishonest. “Do you think people of this community believe people running the reserves, the chiefs, are honest, have integrity?”

But the Ottawa fishbowl woke up Saturday to a press release. Trudeau had nominated Adler for a Manitoba seat and TRACY MUGGLI, a healthcare executive and two-time Liberal candidate, for a spot next door in Saskatchewan.

Vandal did, in fact, express an opinion.

The Canadian Press take the jobs their employees can’t do.

The Canadian Broadcasting Corp. paid out $18.4 million in bonuses this year after hundreds of jobs at the public broadcaster were eliminated.

Documents obtained through access to information laws show CBC/Radio-Canada paid bonuses to 1,194 employees for the 2023-24 fiscal year.

More than $3.3 million of that sum was paid to 45 executives.

That means those executives got an average bonus of over $73,000, which is more than the median family income after taxes in 2022, according to Statistics Canada.

According to Statistics Canada, the decline in June was even greater than the previous month, which saw permits drop 12.2% in May and the data is even worse on a year-over-year basis, where the overall value of permits issued in June has dropped by 21.6%.

At least a quarter of Department of National Defence buildings and other infrastructure dates from the 1970s and requires “significant maintenance,” says an internal audit. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had proposed to recycle federal property for housing.

“Approximately 25 percent of existing infrastructure is greater than 50 years old and requires significant maintenance, repair and recapitalization to ensure it remains serviceable and compliant with health, safety and environment regulations,” said an Audit Of Defence Infrastructure.
