The Sound Of Settled Science

University of Cambridge;

Planting trees and suppressing wildfires do not necessarily maximise the carbon storage of natural ecosystems. A new study has found that prescribed burning can actually lock in or increase carbon in the soils of temperate forests, savannahs and grasslands. […]

“Using controlled burns in forests to mitigate future wildfire severity is a relatively well-known process. But we’ve found that in ecosystems including temperate forests, savannahs and grasslands, fire can stabilise or even increase soil carbon,” said Dr Adam Pellegrini in the University of Cambridge’s Department of Plant Sciences, first author of the report.

He added: “Most of the fires in natural ecosystems around the globe are controlled burns, so we should see this as an opportunity. Humans are manipulating a process, so we may as well figure out how to manipulate it to maximise carbon storage in the soil.”

Fire burns plant matter and organic layers within the soil, and in severe wildfires this leads to erosion and leaching of carbon. It can take years or even decades for lost soil carbon to re-accumulate. But the researchers say that fires can also cause other transformations within soils that can offset these immediate carbon losses, and may stabilise ecosystem carbon.

Herd Immunity in La Crete

I could not find a version of this story other than the CBC one. But its definitely worth the click.

CBC- Health expert urges caution after blood-testing firm claims ‘pandemic is over’ in Alberta hamlet

More than 1,200 people in the hamlet of La Crete, 700 kilometres northwest of Edmonton, paid $100 each in mid-December to have their blood tested for antibodies by Ichor Blood Services, a private lab specimen collection company based in Calgary. The tests found antibodies in most of the 991 unvaccinated individuals who were tested. Ichor CEO Mike Kuzmickas said he believes the results show La Crete is relatively safe from COVID-19. “The pandemic is over in La Crete; they have reached herd immunity,” Kuzmickas told CBC News in an email last month.

Funny how the CBC “expert” seems to have no idea or knowledge of these studies.

David Unwin is a primary care physician in the UK. For the last eight years he’s been running a long term cohort study in his clinic, in which he treats his diabetic patients with a low carb diet. The study has generated massive amounts of useful data on what happens when patients with type 2 diabetes switch to a low carb diet. And the results have been pretty astounding, with patients going in to complete remission from their diabetes (something which was previously thought to be virtually impossible), lowering their blood pressure, improving their cholesterol levels, losing weight, improving their liver and kidney function, and being able to go off drugs that they would otherwise likely have had to stay on for the rest of their lives.

Oxford Academic- The Role of Immunomodulatory Nutrients in Alleviating Complications Related to SARS-CoV-2: A Scoping Review

Overall, the findings of our review are consistent with our hypothesis about vitamin D, vitamin C, and zinc. High-dose vitamin C appears to beneficially impact outcomes related to COVID-19 without adverse effects. Zinc has a potential therapeutic and synergistic role against COVID-19 when administered with HCQ or chloroquine. In addition, high doses of vitamin D reduced the severity of the illness caused by COVID-19.

The most relevant results were: (1) melatonin prevents SARS-CoV-2 infection, (2) although much remains to be clarified, at high doses, it seems to have a coadjuvant therapeutic effect in the treatment of SARS-CoV-2 infection and (3) melatonin is effective against SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Journal of Clinical & Medical Images- Loratadine syrup is successfully used to fix COVID-19 induced respiratory distress and chest pain

One of the Antihistamin-1, Loratadine syrup at dose of 10ml per day for 6 days has saved the life of one pregnant woman from severe Covid-19 disease at the 25 weeks of gestational age. However, she has been treated with strong antibiotics before that, even though the disease relapsed after those treatment dosages. Finally, she was responded well to Loratadine syrup.

Science Alert;

Millions of people take antidepressants each day, but a major new review of the data brings up some concerns with how the drugs are currently prescribed.

In fact, when taken over long periods for mild and moderate depression, antidepressants may be doing patients more harm than good, the review explains.

That’s not to say we shouldn’t use antidepressants at all – in many instances, they save lives and work well.

But the authors of the new review, which appears in the British Medical Journal’s Drug and Therapeutics Bulletin, suggest doctors should prescribe fewer antidepressants for shorter periods of time, and focus on people with severe depression.

In other cases, the evidence is unclear on how effective the drugs really are – and whether the benefits outweigh the side effects.

But wait, there’s more.

One of the big issues highlighted by the review is that most clinical trials only look at the efficacy of the drugs over a six- to 12-week study period. In the real world, however, people are prescribed antidepressants for years.

Good grief.

Unsupervised Learning

Today almost everything we had figured out then is wrong. We didn’t understand the origin of modern humans, and we’re still in the process of unpacking all the complexity as more and more findings come to light. Beginning in 2010, ancient DNA made plain that Neanderthals and their East-Asian cousins, the Denisovans (after Denisova cave in which their remains were discovered), were not evolutionary dead ends; their traces continue on in us.

Via WUWT;

New research from the University of Massachusetts Amherst provides a novel answer to one of the persistent questions in historical climatology, environmental history and the earth sciences: what caused the Little Ice Age? The answer, we now know, is a paradox: warming.

The Little Ice Age was one of the coldest periods of the past 10,000 years, a period of cooling that was particularly pronounced in the North Atlantic region. This cold spell, whose precise timeline scholars debate, but which seems to have set in around 600 years ago, was responsible for crop failures, famines and pandemics throughout Europe, resulting in misery and death for millions. To date, the mechanisms that led to this harsh climate state have remained inconclusive. However, a new paper published recently in Science Advances gives an up-to-date picture of the events that brought about the Little Ice Age. Surprisingly, the cooling appears to have been triggered by an unusually warm episode.

When lead author Francois Lapointe, postdoctoral researcher and lecturer in geosciences at UMass Amherst and Raymond Bradley, distinguished professor in geosciences at UMass Amherst began carefully examining their 3,000-year reconstruction of North Atlantic sea surface temperatures, results of which were published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences in 2020, they noticed something surprising: a sudden change from very warm conditions in the late 1300s to unprecedented cold conditions in the early 1400s, only 20 years later.

Using many detailed marine records, Lapointe and Bradley discovered that there was an abnormally strong northward transfer of warm water in the late 1300s which peaked around 1380. As a result, the waters south of Greenland and the Nordic Seas became much warmer than usual. “No one has recognized this before,” notes Lapointe.

Findings: The NNEs suggest that at least 1,000 unvaccinated people likely need to be excluded to prevent one SARS-CoV-2 transmission event in most types of settings for many jurisdictions, notably Australia, California, Canada, China, France, Israel, and others.

and

Conclusions: Vaccines are beneficial, but the high NNEs suggest that excluding unvaccinated people has negligible benefits for reducing transmissions in many jurisdictions across the globe. This is because unvaccinated people are likely not at significant risk — in absolute terms — of transmitting SARS-CoV-2 to others in most types of settings since current baseline transmission risks are negligible.

Epidemiology of myocarditis and pericarditis following mRNA vaccines in Ontario, Canada: by vaccine product, schedule and interval

There were 19,740,741 doses of mRNA vaccines administered and 297 reports of myocarditis/pericarditis meeting our inclusion criteria. Among these, 69.7% occurred following the second dose of COVID-19 mRNA vaccine and 76.8% occurred in males. The median age of individuals with a reported event was 24 years. The highest reporting rate of myocarditis/pericarditis was observed in males aged 18-24 years following mRNA-1273 as the second dose; the rate in this age group was 5.1 times higher than the rate following BNT162b2 as the second dose.

Simple, cheap and effective

I had not heard of South African doctor Shankara Chetty prior to this interview, but since the beginning of the pandemic he claims to have successfully treated over 7000 Covid patients with widely available and cheap antihistamines and steroids. What stands out in the interview is his basic approach to the pandemic: see the patient in person and take time to understand the progression of the disease. This stands in stark contrast to the approach in Europe and North America where we are suffering from an obsession with data and randomized clinical trials while completely ignoring the efforts of medical innovators like Dr. Chetty.

We discuss why the traditional LDL/cholesterol hypothesis of heart disease is wrong, and why the scientific evidence actually supports an alternate hypothesis much more strongly. That alternate hypothesis is the thrombogenic hypothesis, which we go through in some detail. Finally, Malcolm tells us what people should be doing in order to protect themselves from heart disease.
