Federal prosecutors in Nebraska say at least 20 people with links to the Venezuelan prison gang Tren de Aragua have stolen $5.4 million in an ATM hacking conspiracy that sprawled across the United States, including the Chicago area.
The indictment alleges the group carried out dozens of so-called ATM jackpotting attacks, a form of cyber-enabled bank theft in which thieves physically access an ATM, install malware, and force the machine to dispense cash without debiting customer accounts. Prosecutors say the conspiracy operated from at least January 2024 through this month and targeted more than 90 financial institutions nationwide, including here in Chicago.[…]
Members of the group are charged with a mix of federal crimes, including conspiracy to commit bank fraud, conspiracy to commit bank burglary and computer fraud, conspiracy to commit money laundering, and conspiracy to provide material support to terrorists.

A former university football player who sexually assaulted two women has been sentenced to just two years in prison because he is black and was feeling intense pressure around the time of the attacks, the judge said. Omogbolahan Jegede, 25, had choked one of the women almost into unconsciousness.
“It should be noted that but, for the contents of the Impact of Race and Culture Assessment (IRCA), the pre-sentence report and all the mitigating factors surrounding Omogbolahan (Teddy) Jegede, this sentence would have been much higher,” Justice Frank Hoskins said in his Nova Scotia Supreme Court decision on Wednesday.

A 26-year-old Toronto man has been arrested and charged with ISIS-linked terrorism offences and two other men are charged for alleged hate-motivated extremism targeting women and members of the Jewish community.
The federal terrorism investigation and related probes by Toronto police and Peel police follow violent incidents of armed men trying to abduct women from the street, one in May and two in June.
The RCMP charged Waleed Khan, 26, of Toronto with various terrorism charges including participating in the activities of a terrorist group, facilitating terrorist activity, terrorist financing and conspiracy to commit murder in association with a terrorist group.
Police charging information names ISIS as the terrorist entity, also known as the Islamic State or ISIL.
Khan was also charged by Toronto police and Peel police, along with two other Toronto men — Osman Azizov, 18, Fahad Sadaat, 19.

Smith says those who want to become permanent residents would then know “the number of years they’ve got to work in order to be able to receive all the entitlements of those who have been taxpayers all their lives.”
Smith says being a citizen or being on the path to citizenship as a permanent resident has privileges.
“Until somebody becomes a permanent resident and citizen we’ll treat them like tourists,” she says.

Global- Extortion suspects have all claimed refugee status, Canada’s border agency says
The foreign nationals were identified by B.C.’s Extortion Task Force, but once the Canada Border Services Agency began investigating them, all claimed to be refugees. As a result, deportations of the 14 suspects have been put on hold until the Immigration and Refugee Board decides whether they have legitimate cases for asylum.

Update: Following our story on White City Councillor Shahnaz Sultana, the mayor and council voted to temporarily relieve Sultana of all her additional committee and representative duties. She will still be able to attend council meetings and vote as there are no provisions in the municipal act for impeachment or recall of a councillor.
