This is why Canada is circling the drain, let alone do anything, no one will even say anything for fear of being called racist or xenophobic. When you watch your country being destroyed and won’t even say anything, there are two possible explanations, cowardice or indifference.
I think I may have been unduly hard on Canadians, of which I am one, over the extreme cowardice they demonstrate. I think it may be more indifference, as anything resembling the Canada people remember is so far gone that no one even relates to it anymore. It is why my children’s generation feel nothing about this notion of “Canada”. Not with a bang but a whimper may be exactly correct.
Why would Cape Breton ever want immigrants? Cape Breton has been exporting useless surplus humanity for at least 75 years. Cape Breton was an industrial powerhouse until union activism chased out every viable business. Back in the 1970s federal Investment Tax Credit would pay for 75% of new business as a tax refund and you could probably weasel out a good chunk of the other 25% in grants. There were free factories to be had but the workforce was so toxic there were no takers. Cape Breton doesn’t need immigrants. It needs ambition.
