Landmark Fracking Study Finds No Water Pollution;

The final report from a landmark federal study on hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, found no evidence that chemicals or brine water from the gas drilling process moved upward to contaminate drinking water at a site in western Pennsylvania.
The Department of Energy report, released Monday, was the first time an energy company allowed independent monitoring of a drilling site during the fracking process and for 18 months afterward. After those months of monitoring, researchers found that the chemical-laced fluids used to free gas stayed about 5,000 feet below drinking water supplies.
Scientists used tracer fluids, seismic monitoring and other tests to look for problems, and created the most detailed public report to date about how fracking affects adjacent rock structures.

Franklin Lost and Found

Statement from the Prime Minister;

“I am delighted to announce that this year’s Victoria Strait Expedition has solved one of Canada’s greatest mysteries, with the discovery of one of the two ships belonging to the Franklin Expedition lost in 1846.
“Although we do not know yet whether the discovery is Her Majesty’s Ship (HMS) Erebus or HMS Terror, we do have enough information to confirm its authenticity. This find was confirmed on Sunday, September 7, 2014, using a remotely operated underwater vehicle recently acquired by Parks Canada.
“This is truly a historic moment for Canada. Franklin’s ships are an important part of Canadian history given that his expeditions, which took place nearly 200 years ago, laid the foundations of Canada’s Arctic sovereignty.

And early evidence suggests there was a seismic crew on board.

They have their transfer payments to keep them warm.

Hydraulic fracturing in Nova Scotia may be a viable practice in the future, but it should not proceed right now.
“We conclude that the province is not able to make fully informed decisions either for or against the development of unconventional gas and oil resources by hydraulic fracturing at the present time,” said the final report from the Nova Scotia Independent Review Panel on Hydraulic Fracturing, released Thursday.
The panel, headed by Cape Breton University president David Wheeler, acknowledged the controversial method of extracting natural gas could create a major economic and employment boost in the province, with potential benefits to the regional economy topping $1 billion per year and 740 to 1,480 jobs created during the development phase.

Free Ethical Oil!

Vivian Krause;

Over the past five years, I have gone though more than 100,000 pages of U.S. tax returns and traced more than 2,000 grants from U.S. foundations to environmental and First Nations groups in Canada. Most of my research is based on U.S. tax returns because the Internal Revenue Service requires greater disclosure than the Canadian Revenue Agency.
While the volunteer activists on the front lines of the Tar Sands Campaign are every bit as Canadian as I am, their big funders are not. According to U.S. tax returns and other documents, the Tar Sands Campaign is co-funded by the Rockefeller Brothers Fund, the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, the Oak Foundation, the Tides Foundation, the Sea Change Foundation, the Marisla Foundation and at least a dozen other foundations – most of which are based in California. These are the big green elephants that have fueled efforts to thwart the development of Canadian oil and gas for more than a decade.
By my analysis, more than a dozen U.S. foundations have granted at least US$75 million between 2009 and 2013 for initiatives that stymie the Canadian energy sector. This does not include grants for general or unspecified purposes nor for large-scale conservation initiatives that aim to put huge blocks of land off-limits to natural resource development.
So, what’s the motivation of the funders? One of the few documents that provide insights into the funding of the climate movement is a strategy paper, Design to Win: Philanthropy’s Role in the Fight Against Global Warming. According to Design to Win, the overarching goal of voter and consumer education campaigns is to create a policy context for a massive shift in investment capital and a billion-dollar market for renewable energy. Without a negative foil of bad press about fossil fuels, it would be much harder to justify the billions of dollars that government has invested in solar and wind.

The Incestuous Relationship of the Greenies & Their Money Men

A damning report (PDF) has been published by the U.S. Senate, which carefully describes how a handful of billionaires & millionaires control funding to assorted environmental groups. They, in turn, then make donations to America’s two major political parties. Guess which one they fund the most by far?

One scheme, led by the New York-based Park Foundation and California-based Schmidt Family Foundation, provides numerous grants to the New York-based SMF, which serves as the fiscal sponsor for multiple New York groups engaged in this effort, including Water Defense, Frack Action and Artists Against Fracking. During 2011, SMF gave $147,750 to Water Defense. The following year, SMF funneled a $150,000 grant “to support Water Defense” from Schmidt. Notably, Water Defense was founded in 2010 by actor Mark Ruffalo, who has an estimated net worth of $20 million and was listed on Time Magazines’ 2011 “People Who Mattered” for his anti-fracking efforts. In 2011, SMF gave Frack Action $324,198, with $150,000 stemming from Schmidt grants to SMF. Ironically, one of the Schmidt grants specified that $100,000 go “to support Frack Action’s grassroots campaign fighting for a ban on horizontal hydraulic fracturing”.

Free Ethical Oil!

An interview with Ezra Levant;

AO: What is the book’s overarching message?
EL: I’ll never know as much about the oil and gas industry as an actual petroleum engineer, but I have ways of looking at things that people who are right in the thick of it might lack. I remind people this is not just about Republicans versus Democrats, Liberals versus Conservatives. It’s not a British Columbia or New Brunswick problem. The fracking story is a global thing. And the real beneficiaries of any anti-fracking policy are not some local activists, but Vladimir Putin, and Qatar and Iran.

Oh, Frack!

Telegraph;

Russia is secretly working with environmental groups campaigning against fracking in an attempt to maintain Europe’s dependence on energy imports from Moscow, the secretary-general of Nato has said.
Speaking at the Chatham House foreign affairs think-tank in London, Anders Fogh Rasmussen said Russia was mounting a sophisticated disinformation campaign aimed at undermining attempts to exploit alternative energy sources such as shale gas.

Crime Of Redundancy

Canadian Press;

The Law Society of Alberta has disbarred a lawyer accused of misconduct in his handling of settlements awarded to survivors of residential school abuse. […]
The panel heard that between 2006 and 2012, Blott’s Calgary law firm handled almost 4,600 residential school claims, many in southern Alberta. Information was taken from each victim who would sign a retainer agreement. If the settlement were $100,000, Blott would receive $15,000 from the federal government and up to an additional $15,000 from the settlement payout.
“The tragic reality … is what started out as a reconciliation effort in the righting of wrongs turned into what can only be described as a factory of gross self-interest, where victims of the residential school system were essentially revictimized and treated less like human beings and more like cattle,” said Harvie.
“They were in fact dehumanized by a process where the ultimate goal appears to be making as much money as possible with the least amount of personal attention.”

“Remember when this country knew how to build a pipeline?”

Late last year, the federal review panel that approved the Northern Gateway project listed 209 conditions that had to be met. That panel began hearing public comments way back in mid-2010. Which is to say: This one panel was in operation for longer than it took for the actual Trans Mountain Pipeline to be scouted, conceived, planned, built and activated. Sixty years ago, we laid pipe. Now we lay paper.

We need a famine.

Enbridge Decision Tuesday

Bloomberg;

Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s cabinet must decide by midnight tomorrow whether to approve the C$6.5 billion ($6 billion) pipeline, which would carry diluted bitumen from Alberta’s oil sands across British Columbia. Canada’s petroleum industry is seeking measures to move landlocked crude to offshore markets with another proposed pipeline, TransCanada Corp’s, Keystone XL, in regulatory limbo in the U.S.
Saskatchewan Premier Brad Wall said signs point toward the federal government permitting Northern Gateway. “We’re hopeful approval’s coming,” Wall said in a June 12 phone interview. “I’m reading the tea leaves and picking up on signals like everyone else.”

Don’t blink.

F-Series off, eh?

…in 2013 in Canada — this according to veteran auto journalist Jeremy Cato, writing in The Globe and Mail — that Ford’s F-series pickup truck was the best-selling vehicle, outpacing sales of the most popular small commuter car, the Honda Civic, by more than 100 per cent [through March 2014: F-Series 24,383; Civic 12,407]. Yes, that’s right. Highly urbanized Canada, with 80 per cent of its population clustered in cities of varying sizes, and more than two-thirds living in large metropolises, is in love with the good old gas-guzzling pickup…
…Should Tutu, Young, Redford and others not be naming and shaming individual automobile drivers, or pickup-truck aficionados, in hopes of reducing global demand for carbon-based fuel?
But no. It’s so much easier, psychologically, to lambaste the few supposed monstrous evildoers, in this case oil and gas explorers and producers, rather than the much larger cohort that enthusiastically creates a bustling market for the dreaded product…

Maudits hypocrites!
