Thought experiment: If left-leaning Canadians were asked whether the Carney government should start treating their biggest customer with respect or seriously risk a disastrous outcome for the Canadian economy, would a vast majority of them respond with some version of Orange Man Bad? Not many, I would guess since the media tried to ignore it.. What was in the package? Well, Argentina dropped tarrifs which opened up a dairy market for the US among other things. But, this issue proves the point. Dairy products that the Canadian Dairy Cartel rigged (by dumping product) and playing fast and loose with “quotas” is now less important to the US, since another market (a big one) just opened up. Canada loses negotiation leverage as a result. The US, also, provides machinery (which remains undefined, but you can bet in meshes into Canada’s exports to Argentina of Nuclear power machinery and components). Also, vehicles and pharmacueticals. BUT, here’s the big thing that is listed as a footnote. “Argentina will adopt U.S. regulatory and safety standards, simplifying market access.”
That’s just one country. Lilly mentioned the heavy crude out of Venezuela. Just keep in mind that every trade deal the White House is doing circumvents the leverage our second biggest trade partner has (Canada).
Trump did the exact same thing with Indonesia. Dairy, soy, and other agricultural products. Again, lessening Canada’s leverage.
