Millions upon millions of tax dollars have been wasted on a dangerous facility with a measly 4 hours of electrical storage capacity.
I know Tom Harris well. He’s very good on the worthlessness of AGW programs. However, he’s understating the risk of LI batteries a bit. When an LI battery goes into thermal runaway, the fire cannot be extinguished by any means. The fire wll always burn the battery into the ground, along with anything flammable to which it is attached. It’s a guaranteed total loss.
This country is so beyond hope. The only possible path forward involves bureaucrats being fired by the 100,000 lot. At least 10 lots to start to correct course. The most we hear is reduction by attrition (which never happens).
Kickbacks to politicians and bureaucrats always trump common sense and the wants and needs of the taxpayers.
Doug Ford is acting more and more like Wynne/McGuinty. IIRC, the Ontario Liberal government forcing wind and solar projects on rural Ontario (and other disastrous green energy policies) was a big factor in the Progressive Conservatives winning power in Ontario. Now Ford’s PC government in following the same Liberal methods to force new green energy projects on rural Ontario.

I remember when Danielle Smith addressed the problems with battery storage. “There is no industrialized economy in the world operating that way, because they need baseload. And, I’ll tell you what I know about batteries, because I talked to somebody thinking of investing in it on a 200 megawatt plant. One million dollars to be able to get each megawatt stored: that’s 200 million dollars for his plant alone, and he would get 1 hour of storage.” Video here:

It’s revealing to contrast the angst over abandoned oil wells when the oil company goes broke compared to the nonchalant attitude if the same thing happens to one of these battery facilities. Disposal and cleanup costs would be astronomical.
I received a phone call from the Ontario Conservative Party asking for a donation during the recent election. My reply was ‘only after Doug Ford hangs himself’. He has continued Wynne’s policies, which were Gerald Butts’ ideas in the first place.
I live about 10 miles from the proposed BESS site. Eastern Ontario is rated 2 out of 10 for wind generation, and any solar panels would have to be placed on prime farmland that grows corn, wheat and soybeans.
I think the primary reason the BESS is being put in rural Ontario is cost, both the initial cost of the real estate and also liability if/when the batteries go into thermal runaway and the immediate vicinity has to be evacuated and then decontaminated.
You know if I didn’t know better, the Ford government appears to have been captured by the same foreign actors that have taken control of the federal liberals.
Of course that’s just crazy talk.

The best application for a BESS is system regulation and stability. The ability to inject or pull when needed reduces depending on other producing units resulting in more efficient generating.
Certainly not on or near farm lands. Industrial zones only.
The only application for this version of BESS is enriching parasitic profiteers and politicians.
They will never be a proper backup system for 2 weeks of overcast and no wind.. We spend millions? Billions to smooth out minor problems with the grid.. An hour or two here and there.. And that’s fine$$$..
But the day will come when our energy partner neighbors will tell us to pound salt on the energy transfer because they are also overcast and no wind..
I’m no engineer or scientist but you cant be sending expensive energy all over the place because of resistance in the lines.. Super conductors don’t exist in the real world.. Its the reason why energy is produced close to where its going to be used.. We give it away for free when nobody wants it, but not to us.. And we pay through the nose when we need it.. Because everybody wants to do eat dinner and do laundry at 9 O’clock at night..
God, I wish our politicians had better things to do with themselves..
