Voter registration by party would be a good thing in Canada for this reason. Mandate “smart” thermostats for all registered NDP, Green, and Liberal voters. Separatist / Conservative / Libertarian don’t subsidize low density power systems so aren’t penalized for this (but can pay a premium to jump to the front of the line in the hospital or buy services elsewhere). When wind and solar drop below 50% of nameplate production in the province, Green thermostats are shut off. Below 40%, NDP. Below 30%, Liberal. Us dinosaurs get to use electricity until the coal or natural gas runs out.
Oh, and you can only register as a party member with your vote. If you’re not willing to register with your vote then you are assumed to be in the majority of the province where you are (so NDP/Green, shut-off at 45% of nameplate) for BC.
