“If you cannot defend yourself, then how can you possibly defend Greenland?”

At Conservative Treehouse;

What most people don’t understand about the strategically worded letter to Norway’s leftist Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, is how President Trump has just framed Støre as the defacto head of Brussels, representing the interests of the EU toward the framework of Greenland.

It’s not about the Nobel Peace Prize; it’s something far bigger. President Trump did not initiate contact with PM Støre; the contact was first made by Støre calling President Trump to notify him that their position was to defend Greenland against any threat from a non-NATO nation. President Trump asked how Norway was going to secure that pledge and Støre had no response.

The days of US taxpayers paying to defend territories that others extract wealth from seem numbered.

It’s ridiculous that Europe was more than happy to accept 81 years of free-of-charge American security guarantees, but the moment the United States needs land to maintain that protection, the answer suddenly becomes no.

    1. L – How could the current Liberal regime protect Canada from said Liberal regime?

That is the needed national discussion most notable by it’s absence.

    2. I would say it is directed at Canada. Canada is just as defenseless and reliant on the US to defend Canada from countries like Russia or China.

If you are on X, the big Canadian news today is a globe and mail article about yet another anonymous source leaking a story : that the military is modeling a response to an American invasion. Synopsis: Canada would be defeated in 2 days or less and they hope Canadians would organize into counterinsurgency guerrilla groups. I think this is actually about the Liberal party ramping up fear in Canada hoping to get a majority government in the next election not a genuine threat.

But, look at what the (supposedly) leaked military report is really saying – The Canadian military can’t protect you or Canada’s borders, you’ll have to defend yourselves. They’re admitting that Trump’s comments about Canada being entirely being dependent on American defense is true. Not a surprise to Canadians who live in the real world but probably a big shock to liberal and other left wing voters. Typically, the left wing, big city boomer comments are delusional. They think they can go full Red Dawn wolverine, despite never having handled a weapon and having no military or outdoor survival skills. They’re taking the Liberal party bait hook, line and sinker…just like always.

      1. ” Synopsis: Canada would be defeated in 2 days or less and they hope Canadians would organize into counterinsurgency guerrilla groups. ”

        Great plan.

Too bad that the Liberals TOOK AWAY OUR GUNS first.

I guess we’re using rocks and sticks, then?

        1. Perhaps they are continuing with gun confiscation because the majority of hunters, ranchers and farmers with a PAL are rural, conservative and live in western Canada. Demographic groups that the Liberal party has always despised.

In reality, gun confiscation is about getting more Liberal votes in Quebec and big cities in Ontario.

          1. That, or they fear that Western Canada would collaborate, or even unite with the American occupiers..

      2. Defend Canada against Chyna? Last I heard we were in a strategic partnership. A counterinsurgency is going to be awful to organize now that Carney is confiscating them scary assault-like firearms. Except for the SKS and we have the Indians to thank for that. Realistically the only country that could poses a military threat to Canada is the US. Russia or China have zero means to invade this country militarily, which is why China is doing it by buying real estate and politicians.

        1. Partnering with China is in the political and economic interest of Brookfield, powercorp and other big corporations. Corporations that really don’t give a damn about the political or economic interests of Canadian citizens.

        2. Hate to disagree with you, Pappy. The chicoms send in special forces “tourists” and “businessmen”. Containers of weapons and ammo pre-positioned on the real estate they already own. Think how much chaos they could unleash?
But, you’re probably right … why risk a fight when you can buy what you want?

          1. Don’t forget students! I’m sure the University of a Billion Chinese (UBC) already has a large militia force that is unknown to the governing and student bodies there.

      3. “Canada would be defeated in 2 days or less and they hope Canadians would organize into counterinsurgency guerrilla groups…”

They’re joking, right? Anybody who would be any use to a “counterinsurgency” would be greeting his American liberators with free beer. Any flabby gender-queers and Fahrenheit-room-temperature-IQ “new Canadians” daft enough to try resisting a real army would only succeed in giving a few good men some target practice.

        1. I am thinking that Canada should stop building wind farms and instead harness the energy of all of the brave Canadian WWI and WWII soldiers who must be constantly spinning in their graves over what their country has become.

          1. “You use yer tongue purdier than a ten dollar who…” wait a minute, that sounds rude, I can’t say that!

      4. I try to imagine US troops in an invasion of Canada. They would be perplexed, to say the least, especially those with familly in Canada. But, also, they cannot occupy the whole of Canada due to its size, nor even the three major cities, which contain most of Canada’s immigrant population, many from third world shit-holes bombed by the US over the past three decades.

        1. This is the thing. The US could easily defeat the Canadian military, no argument. But occupation is another thing. Remember the L.A. riots and how many troops it took to secure a few blocks? (Kurt Schlichter wrote about that). Or, better example, Fallujah? It was a bloody battle that required an extensive effort by the coalition and casualties were heavy. The population is 250,000. Now look at the major cities in Canada. Montreal, Toronto, Winnipeg, Calgary, Vancouver, Edmonton, etc. How many battalions do you think the combined US Army and Marine have? Sure, throw in those National guards too. And I mean operational combat troops, along with their ample logistic tail. A: Not enough. You’re talking about controlling millions of people here. An uncooperative population could not be controlled. The US has never demonstrated a very good grasp on handling such situations.

  1. Simple. The ChiComs will defend the EU, and Greenland. The Marxists operating the EU are more closely politically aligned with Communist China than the USA.

Don’t believe that will ever happen? Just wait.

  2. “ The days of US taxpayers paying to defend territories that others extract wealth from seem numbered. “

As a long suffering U.S. taxpayer observing Eurotrash spending next to nothing these many decades to defend themselves, I couldn’t be happier that Trump is doing what he’s doing on the European front. In all those years the one time most NATO member states offered to help (right after 9/11), it was essentially symbolic help, with hardly any “boots on the ground”. I’ll never forget Mark Steyn pointing out that the German troops (what few there were) never stepped foot outside of Bagram air base, writing that their troops were instead “manning the fax machine”.

    1. German troops (what few there were) never stepped foot outside of Bagram air base, writing that their troops were instead “manning the fax machine”

Maybe they were taking sensible precautions against the “Weapons of Mass Destruction”?? And letting the Shermans suck up the consequences of their own folly?

      1. Since NATO was formed Germany has gone to war for the US. The US hasn’t gone to war for Germany.

    2. As I said before, there was an unwritten agreement that NATO countries were allowed to mooch on defence just as long as they supported every “coalition of the willing” scheme that came up. This is how we ended up in Yougoslavia, Libya, etc. With Trump that deal is off. Now that NATO morphed into the Globalist’s military arm, it is becoming adversarial to the U.S.’ strategic interests under Trump.

  3. The days of US tacpayers defending regimes that openly make common cause with enenies of the United States are numbered.

Mark Carney is afraid. He made that quite clear at Davos today. His chances are now better than even of his dying in an American prison, and he knows it.

    1. “His chances are now better than even of his dying in an American prison, ”

C’mon now, Dick Slater. You have to stop teasing us like that.

      1. Carney got a WEF standing ovation for his speech about how “middle’ powers will form a new world order of “soft” power. I think katie telford wrote both speeches read by carney and turd.
Meanwhile, elbows up goofs are praising carney’s “provocative” speech.
Justin’s beard, Katie (coincidence?) Perry, looked pretty frumpy and scowly in a few photo ops that I’ve seen.
Maybe she’s mad that his squeeze, Macron, showed up with sunglasses to hide the shiner.
Can’t wait for Trump to piss them off more.
I would like to think that the Davos set is sunsetting.
But Carney said that nostalgia is not a strategy.
I would counter that tradition and stoic resolve may still win the latter day.

        1. “Carney got a WEF standing ovation for his speech about how middle’ powers will form a new world order of soft power.” The soft power strategy has been the order of the day since Russia took Crimea in 2014. A decade plus of soft power.

        2. Always charging forward these progs , and what’s in the rearview mirror ?integrity, grit, and the values that made the West strong
Carney didn’t seem scared to me , seems like he and the other trough feeders have a plan.
Carney is a son of a bitch,
These globalists need to be put in their place.

          1. “Soft Power The perpetual Canadian excuse.”

Yeah…that and “honest brokers of peace”…

          2. Umm.. ‘flaccid power’ is what it should be called from now on.. just say’n..

        3. O’Keefe is in Davos, wearing a blonde wig and going on dates with attendees with big mouths. Videos incoming.

  4. Oh yes, the Good ‘ole US of A. Late to both world wars when others were fighting for Freedom & Democracy. But made a nice profit on each, even if the Japs spoiled the business model on the 2nd. Now keen to “protect” Greenland which hasn’t needed protecting for 81 years till now… But RUSSIA!!! and CHINA!!! – BAAAAD!!!

Still, at least we haven’t heard about any of that annoying Epstien nonce for a while.

Me? I’m off to re-watch “Wag The Dog”.

    1. Get over yourselves. If you had really wanted to fight for ‘freedom and democracy’ you’d have ridden out to meet the Austrian when he first started piping up — you had intel inside that country; you knew he was building up but not quite ready for prime time. You also had intel all over Japan in their lead up to invading Manchuria; as long as the concessions were ok, right?

Be careful about that Epstein nonce: what he was about could wind up being very…discomfiting…for your country.

    2. Those countries weren’t fighting for “freedom and democracy”….they were fighting for themselves. And strange, doncha think, that Europe just can’t seem to get itself straightened out being the cause of two World Wars.

    3. Maybe read a history book instead.
Those fcking wars would never have ended if not for the Americans.

    4. “Oh yes, the Good ‘ole US of A. Late to both world wars when others were fighting for Freedom & Democracy.”

Blame the two Democratic Presidents who were in office when both wars started.
‘Strong isolationist sentiment’ combined with a liberal government.

And don’t forget how many of our own Quebecois refused to serve…seems that left-wingers may be more cowardly than their counterparts on the right.

      1. The WWII rebellion in Terrace BC from Quebecois who just heard they would be sent overseas comes to mind.

    5. Yes, the United States was slow to join the fight in 1914 and again I’m 1939. Why? George Washington in his farewell address urged that the United States to always pursue a status of neutrality, avoid foreign entanglements, and maintain a policy of friendly commerce with all nations. In both 1914 and 1939 neutraluty was United States foreign policy. It is also why the United States Congress rejected the League of Nations post WWI. Two globalist Democrat presidents destroyed that policy in the 20th century.

      1. Well said. I have yet to find someone who is down on the Swiss more than the US for inactivity in the world wars.

And if US delays are a bad thing, then is neutrality actively evil?

        1. “And if US delays are a bad thing, then is neutrality actively evil?

It really is about whose ox is being gored, isn’t it..

    6. “the Good ‘ole US of A. Late to both world wars when others were fighting for Freedom & Democracy. their monarchs and autocrats.”

They didn’t become ‘World Wars’ until the U.S. joined them. It was just business as usual in Europe, same as it ever was. Those bloodthirsty savages have been at each other’s throats for almost two millennia.

“Greenland which hasn’t needed protecting for 81 years till now..”

Funny thing about that.. The U.S. has been protecting Greenland for Denmark for more than ’81’ years, at largely American expense, throughout the NAZIs, and the Soviets. Turns out that not only is it a critical link in the lifeline the US would extend the UK (and possibly the rest of Europe) in event of another major European war.. but it is also in the primary projected flight path of inbound ICBMs.. Because ‘golden dome’ good!.. RUSSIA!!! and CHINA!!! – BAAAAD!!!

  5. It’s pathetic and ridiculous how stupid people are: before, no one cared about Greenland, I bet no one knew that it’s owned officially by Denmark. Albeit autonomous. And now? Every street imbecile bleats about sovereignity, security threat of Greenland therefore Europe! Every gullible spoonfed by msmedia now is some NATO expert, articles 4/5, interpretation etc. All those vaccine ‘experts’ who were screaming that if YOU don’t jab, THEY will DIE!, every single one of them now they yell about Greenland. A remote frozen island with 50k inhabitants.
    Unbelievably stupid.

    1. The GREAT NEWS for me is that the Trump Tariff TDS’ers are busy carving out another mother of all buying opportunities again!

      Dow -871points (-1.77%)
      Nasdaq -575 points (-2.45%)
      S&P -143 points (-2.07%)

      Keep it up TDS’ers!

        1. Over all, the market always rises; it tracks inflation, the local movements are red noise.

    2. Your right , had a good debate the other day when I was out for breakfast.
      Reminded me of COVID times.

    3. I seriously doubt any Dane or any other European thinks about Greenland anymore then I think about Guam.

      1. Not quite right, BEFORE he could do SFA. That he wouldn’t produce anything (except dead cooks and CO2) wasn’t known at the time it was awarded.

  6. Nice try on the part of Conservative Treehouse to spin Trump’s out of context personal beef regarding the Nobel Prize into some sort of strategic sleight of hand. If Biden had ever made such a statement, what would the reaction of conservatives have been other than to wonder about whether or not his head was actually in the game?

    1. FILTHY LIBERALS.
You always take everything President Trump says- wrongly and we love it.
He got the Prize if you were paying attention, from the “Winner” this bit in his letter is to troll people like you who can’t stop the TTS Trump Tourette’s Syndrome.
The New World Order is being assembled with $1 Billion Entry Fee. And it ain’t more Marxism or Israel Wars. Even Bibi is big mad at President Trump. This is how Russia will enter the free world. Finally.
      God Damn FILTHY LIBERALS.

Monroe Doctrine enforcement is happening now.

    2. More like his most excellent trolling of Norway, but do go on.
Wondering if former President Biden’s head was in the game happened long before he became even Vice President (many conjectured, probably correctly, that he was an insurance policy in that role, especially when Hillary was SoS).

    3. Well we would never have to worry about Biden making such a statement because he did nothing of value…..ever.

    4. I agreee, Dennis, see my comment above. The partisan must still remain reasonable; unfortunately political movements can also become cults, or exhibit cultish behaviour.

  7. pfffft.
    strutting and posturing.
the Donald laughs at the string puppets, hes seen plenty of it in now his 2nd term.
and oy vey has he EVEN hit his stride. mouthy as ever Donald? good. its a wake up call. aka new paradigm etc

    1. His master is net’n’yahoo and megalomania. It’s sad to see him go off the rails; he should concentrate on domestic issues, where he is having great success, it appears. But The Global Stage is always alluring for wannabe “statesmen”.

      1. “His master is net’n’yahoo”

Yeah, that’s why Netanyahu was blind-sided by Trumps Gaza Board of Peace and rejected it as being ” not coordinated with Israel and is contrary to the Israeli government’s policy.” Please.

        1. I think Robert is blind in this case. His “master” was Obama. Obama thought he had a throwaway line with the putdown “but I was president, and you never will be.” Instead he invoked Trump’s ego and gave us the first term (because a bag of flaming dog doodoo would be better than Killery). And then the Republican apparatus rejected him, and the election was stolen, and it became personal. And now the world benefits because a non-politician who can actually build things is in a position to tear down the rotten edifice and build a strong foundation for the future.

          1. Time will tell, but it matters little to you. Right or wrong, you’ll remain tucked in and safe, your way of life continuing uninterrupted under Trump’s benevolent umbrella..

  8. Is anyone watching Trump’s press conference? I just saw one part where he rambles on about how he played baseball as a kid near a mental institution which segued into an exposition on the general state of mental institutions and homelessness for some time before abruptly switching the topic to Antifa. Does he actually think this kind of extemporaneous rambling sounds coherent?

      1. If he didn’t care, he wouldn’t give the press conference in the first place.

And Trump needs the cooperation of, at a minimum, Republican Senators and Congressmen, and their continued support depends on them having trust in the president.

        1. “..and their continued support depends on them having trust in the president. their fear of their electorate, and of being primaried”

          -FTFY

        2. Do you think he cares what people think of his rambling speeches?
          There, does that help you?

    1. What’s your point? That Trump talks like a normal person and not like a robot told what to say by his Red Chinese handlers?

This has been his approach to public addresses for over ten years. It’s worked so far.

    2. Denice
When you are that STUPID, learn to STFU
Trump is one of us dyslexics, and that is why he goes like that, and it is why I can’t stand listening to him, Bush was another dyslexic.

    3. Soo, when Trump was a kid, dangerous lunatics and mental deficients, such as antifa members were safely locked away in big, secure buildings called ‘asylums’? That’s my take away, and it sounds like a solid plan..

  9. If Eurotrashians were anymore insufferably smug in their air of superiority, they’d be Canadians.

    1. Nah I think the French are on top of that. And the Germans got us beat too, nothing smuger than a smug German, except maybe those inbred British blue bloods.

    2. Even Quebecois boomers can only aspire to achieve Davos level of ‘SmugDouche’.. I still give the Canadians some credit..

  10. CTH ordinarily I agree wth but many Conservative commentators cannot get past their affection for The Don. As the US already had as much military access to Greenland as it wanted, the recent postings from him are merely abusive, designed to humiliate and have no coherent objective, apart from his legend in his own mind. Add to his postings, his Gaza Boared of Peace invitations, this is not 4-D chess, this is descent into megalomania. For which I am sad. But he is ending NATO, which is long past it’s expiration date.

    1. “Affection for the Don” is supporting of action over saying the right thing. EPA over-reach repeal is enough for me to support him.

Sorry Robert, I mostly hear the Ottawa where appearance and saying (versus doing) the right thing is the most important. “The Art of the Deal” is how to use what their illusions say you think as a blind to what you really want to get.

      1. Drat. “…what their illusions say you think and you can use it to blind them as to what you really want to get.”

    2. Trump fears a credible Greenland independence movement giving way to a ‘Belt & Road’ initiative, and the U.S. stuck holding the bag. Trump already had to pry the Panama canal out of China’s grubby little fingers, and suffer the UK giving the land beneath a US naval base in the Indian ocean to Chinese clients, he will not tolerate a future Chinese move on strategic Greenland. Speaking of which, Carney has been awfully chummy with China as of late..

    3. The Danes nearly granted the Chinese a base on Greenland in the past; that was a move that in one of those rare moments unified the GOP and the DNC — really something to behold.
The United States has always had at least some interest in Greenland — we’ve tried to buy it multiple times. It is of strategic importance to us; we’ve not been shy about saying it.

The “God Emperor” stuff is rather unseemly; I will grant you that. I often wonder how many of them are organic accounts. I would prefer people not engage in such behaviors…and not be encouraged to do so. CTH seems to have quite a…collection.

  11. I originally agreed with most of the big things Trump was doing, calling Canada out on our crime problem, getting countries to up their defence spending, cleaning domestic crime, etc. Lately, however, I’m finding myself puzzled with what Trump is doing. Threatening to Invade Greenland is the big one. Creating a foundation where he’s “Chairman for life” and demanding everyone pony up billions of dollars or their countries will face sanctions.

Does anyone else feel there’s been a shift over the last year?

    1. “Does anyone else feel there’s been a shift over the last year?”

The Kennedy Centre renaming, the 51st state joke, the Nobel Peace Prize thing, the Gaza Board of Peace, the post on Reiner’s death, now the Greenland thing…yeah, these are not good moves to me. He needs to reign in his ego and stop trolling before it ruins his legacy completely.

That said, I still like almost everything he has done even if I don’t like the way he does some of it.

    2. Figure out what the Europeans have been doing for 500 years and continue to do with the epicenter in the “City of London”. Nothing makes sense until you look at the very big picture, this is a battle for freedom vs serfdom, and the enemy are the European elites, responsible for both World Wars, and currently trying to kick off WWIII. Why? For power and money, it was ever thus.

  12. If the US feels they have had to carry too much of the load in regards to NATO, they have the option to quit or to renegotiate the deal.

And that’s fine. In fact, European NATO would then start taking their mutal defense more seriously, and that’s a good thing.

But the idea that living under the US defensive umbella then entitles the US to a piece of your land is unmitigated horseshit.

    1. “If the US feels they have had to carry too much of the load in regards to NATO, they have the option to quit or to renegotiate the deal.

He tried that. They went absolutely apoplectic, denounced the US for being an ‘unreliable’ sugar-daddy, and clamored everybody to get on the ‘F*ck the USA’ bandwagon for it. Piss on them..

“And that’s fine. In fact, European NATO would then start taking their mutual defense more seriously, and that’s a good thing.”

No they didn’t. They started wining like little Sally b!tches with a skinned knee, then they made a bunch of lofty statements and speeches, proclaiming their communal intent to accomplish something.. one day.. They whined to Trump to somehow make Big Z win the war.. and pay for it.. Then they brooded and sulked until Trump imposed himself on Greenland. Once again, Piss on them..

“But the idea that living under the US defensive umbella then entitles the US to a piece of your land is unmitigated horseshit.

The US needs to clean up our messes and protect us! That’s their job! But they can’t park in the driveway! No! They need to park in the street! Yeah!
Here’s the deal, KM.. These are Trump’s new terms. As ‘outrageous’ as they may sound, they are still far better than the alternative. The nations involved will either take them, or leave them, but the free ride is over..

  13. KM, you’re BSing again. Probably it’s ur TDS acting up. Greenland is not a piece of Denmark land. It’s an autonomous territory, and official ‘landlord’ is a small country the other side of Atlantic. Because of this, all those big words the snowflakes from Europe + u lefties use (omg sovereignty! security!), those words are horseshit. Denmark did squat for Greenland, they were asked many times to ramp up military presence but they didn’t. And they can’t because they have no resources. If Greenland would have been vital for NATO sovereignty/security, why NATO didn’t step up?
BTW, another thing: why no one from Canada in what-200 years of meaningful existence claimed Greenland? It’s much closer + the people in Greenland speak pretty much the same language as Nunavut. Because we were never a serious country. We were a slave dominion and after we grew up, the rot of Socialism came in. Actually we’re worse than that, idiot Carney plans to defend / help military Denmark in this issue! So we plan to act like EU while we are in N America.

    1. Is there any accusation lazier and more knee jerk than “You have TDS”? I take Trump’s actions and policies one at a time. If I agree with it, I agree with it. If I don’t, I don’t. You can tell someone who has stopped thinking for themselves when they support every … damn … thing … that Trump does no matter how loony.

And this is loony. This isn’t about Denmark. This is about Greenland. They have the right to be part of any country they choose that will have them. Period. It’s not Trump’s call.

      1. “Is there any accusation lazier and more knee jerk than “You have TDS”? I take Trump’s actions and policies one at a time. If I agree with it, I agree with it.”

        Example?

        1. I opined that overthrowing Maduro was good for Venezuela. I expressed apprehension at the US’s growing international adventurism, but that act at least I approved of. I have often said the US desperately needed to secure its southern border. I think Trump is hamhanded in the way he goes about it, but I gave him credit for taking on the job. I gave credit for the Abraham Accord.

          And so on.

Now tell me when DanC has criticized any of Trump’s policies.

      2. And we have a right to protect our national security interests. Other countries be damned — the ‘international rules based order’ was always the shoddiest of scams.

Melian Dialogues — but read it for what it really is and compare it to what really was/is.
        Just a suggestion.

    2. If your guy can do no wrong, and the other guys can do no right, then your perspective might be a wee bit suspect.

BTW, you do understand you are advocating for exactly the same thing a couple of world wars were fought over, right?

    3. Dan, you should have noted what was TDs in the earlier post and rebutted. The possible Canadian claim was a good point I haven’t seen rebutted anywhere.

KM – weak response. Calling it as about Denmark is ignoring who has actually been responsible for Greenland’s defence and defensive infrastructure for the last century.

jgriffin – I didn’t see any “your guy is always right or wrong”. And I chuckled when I saw your allegations about this being why the world wars were fought. Care to explain that line of thought?

        1. Which one, Peter? I’m betting you meant why wars were fought, but I usually lose when I bet.

I was hoping for a discussion but it seems drive-by punditry is the new norm.

  14. Could someone explain to me how exactly Russia or China is going to take over Greenland??? Trump is using National Security as an excuse to take Greenland.

    1. It’s particularly silly given that Greenland being part of Denmark in no way prevented the US from protecting it. Until about a month ago,
the US would likely have been given permission to build additional military bases there. It would have been in everyone’s interest.

    2. I know a guy who insists that there are concrete submarine pens in the southern Queen Charlotte Islands that aren’t sized for allied subs. And that the area was made a park to help hide just how defenseless we were from Japanese attack pre-Pearl harbor.

I’m not sure i believe him on all points, but it’s hard to know on things that need a very close in source of believability (since so many are sure truth is subjective).

To your point: what level of advanced base planning is understandable as “we want this”?
