A federal agency says a ban on gas stoves is on the table amid rising concern about harmful indoor air pollutants emitted by the appliances. 

The US Consumer Product Safety Commission plans to take action to address the pollution, which can cause health and respiratory problems. 

“This is a hidden hazard,” Richard Trumka Jr., an agency commissioner, said in an interview. “Any option is on the table. Products that can’t be made safe can be banned.”

  1. Hardly surprising. They tried scaring the public about GHGs over the past 30 years, and the public indifference said “get lost.” So now they are trying the immediate household safety angle. It’s still just a trick.

    2. In an effort to save energy, homes have been built more tightly to reduce air infiltration which had helped reduce indoor contaminants.
      Theoretically, tighter living spaces might lead to a hazard from carbon monoxide or nitrogen oxides produced by flame impingement on cookware. However, realistically it’s a trivial hazard that can be controlled with a kitchen hood.
      The problem is that one government solution leads to other problems that spiral into other government solutions that take us to increasingly higher levels of complexity and cost.
      Far more serious with a gas stove is having an open flame ignition source indoors. But that’s where my level of discomfort with a gas stove lies. To each their own hazard assessment.

      1. I’ve cooked with gas well over 40yrs now; currently we get inspected ever 5 yrs as requested by our insurance company. We buy quality products and never had a problem we also installed an exhaust fan to the outside – not just a fan in the hood. A burning candle with children/pets in the home is more dangerous, imho. I had a potpourri – catch on fire on me once; I grabbed oven mitts – yelled at someone to open the door and I threw it out side. Seems the build up of candle’s soot made the inside get that buildup that gets in wood stove pipes if you don’t maintain. So I don’t use those things anymore, but the gas stove/oven is great and I really love cooking with it, costs is still lower than electric and if power goes out we can still light the burners with a lighter. For preserving – it’s the best as If you get a glass stove top instead, it can’t do preserving on them, may break the glass and it doesn’t keep the heat cycle up. And you are right – to each their own. Some really are uncomfortable with any open flame I get that but – that’s the great part of why we were great – we had these freedoms to choose – clearly we can see they want to take that away from us.

    3. There are a few watchwords you need to look for which will explain the madness. In the case of the claim that gas cooking appliances (none of which have had pilot lights for about 50 years) are dangerous sources of indoor air pollution … the word is “asthma”.

      Asthma has been used to demand diesel trucks be completely redesigned … and soon … to be banned altogether. It’s why your local city just bought a fleet of unreliable, and flammable electric busses. And now asthma will cancel your cooktop.

      Why asthma? Because the CDC has determined that asthma is on the rise among po’ inner city black chil’ren who live down by the freeway. And the EPA studies agree. And BLM are outraged! Because po’ black chil’ren are a payin’ the price fo’ whiteys pollution. Diesel particulate matter, dust from all them fancy automobiles, and … ohhhhhhhh mommmaaaaaaaa … your mammy’s gas stove are all choking the chil’ren to death. Nevermind obesity, sedentary gamer lifestyles, poor diets, filthy homes or mommy freebasing on the coffee table. Nope. Gotta pin the blame on whitey … and start taking shit away from whitey.

      And if you don’t agree … like ALL the US courts will agree … then you’re a racist KKK hooded monster who hates little black chil’ren. See how this works? Goodbye gas stoves and cooktops.

  5. I remember 20 years or so ago when they started mandating these Igloo coolers of houses where they sealed up every little crack in the structure. My brother, an HVAC contractor, complained that mandating no fresh air should ever enter a home was a prescription for disaster. Between all the glue and chemicals in the plastic boxes they’re building these days and the fact that a fart will linger in the air for years on end, is it any wonder indoor air is now poisonous?

    1. I assume it’s building code in Ontario (and probably elsewhere) that new homes have heat recovery ventilation. Our home built in 2016 does and there is a certificate with the equipment that the system was balanced at 105 cubic ft./min.

  7. Gas stoves have been around for about a century with no complaints. Now suddenly it’s a problem?

    1. The reason for the ban is because it “props up” the hydrocarbon business. It has nothing to do with health or fire safety in the least.

      What people need to remember is that code officials’ mandate is specifically defined and limited, and shouldn’t just be used as a ideological hobby horse.

    1. they curtained off the stove area with a sheet of plastic. Who cooks like that?
    2. they did not have the overhead fan on. Of course not, it would have sucked up all the bad stuff.
    3. they did not take into account the food. It’s well known that cooking certain foods releases things that aren’t great to inhale, but we have to eat, so better leave that out.

    I’m reminded of the 10,000 deaths per year attributed to coal fired generating stations in Ontario. What happened after all the plants shut down? Who knows, they got what they wanted.

    1. The study cited NO2 and CO as the pollutants of concern, which set off my BS meter. Natural gas is the cleanest burning fossil fuel there is, something has be very, very wrong with your gas supply if your burners are producing incomplete combustion and NOx emissions.

      2. I cook with gas and keep a portable CO meter right next to the stove. It has never read anything other than zero.

  15. Every time I see a show on the television about a wonderful remodel of a home, the expensive new range is a big stainless steel gas range. Never do I remember an electric, even though there had to be just one, maybe.
    This can’t be a majority popular policy, can it? If they are going to ban gas ranges in California, they are going to have to make a work around exclusion for the elites.
    So many times the lefties make what should be vote losing decisions, yet they keep winning elections. And the righties (if there are any?) won’t pick up and advertise support of what should be a winning side to an issue.

    1. In the city of Berkeley … you can’t even run a gas line to a new home. However … if you already have a gas line and gas appliances … you’re OK. Berkeley’s residential neighborhoods were 100% built out 50 years ago … so there’s very little new construction. Same with wood burning fireplaces … those are banned too. But … if you buy an older house that has one … you’re golden. See how this works? Just buy an older mansion in the Berkeley Hills … hint: Berkeley is loaded with 1920’s era mansions … thank you, Roaring Twenties … we got shit DONE prior to the Great Depression and Roosevelt communism

  17. They’re working to eliminate wood stoves as well. This is very bad, as government is quite aware that many people – especially in rural areas rely on them, and more are adopting them as other energy sources become more insecure. I am working on an occasional basis with a company that makes wood stoves. Getting UL and EPA ratings is difficult, and getting a new stove approved for residential heating is especially problematic.

    I predict that in the very near future, this will come to a head, once rural residents really start feeling the squeeze from high energy costs and unreliable supply. My own mother would have frozen if she were unable to burn wood, since last year her propane supplier was weeks late in refilling her tank.

    1. If they ban wood stoves, there will be thousands of people dying from back alley wood stoves.

      You tube stoves will abound. I’ll probably make one just to spite them.

      1. The 25th anniversary of the Big-ass ice storm just passed. Hundreds if not thousands of rural people would have perished without wood stoves.

  19. The main reason this is a problem now is because of the growing homesteading movement. Propane powered appliances and wood stoves are the main technologies used to free ourselves of corrupt and evil utilities and gubmint. Look at the amount of taxes on a utility bill. Municipal ‘franchise’ fees for example.

      When they’re complaining about a tiny percent of kids with asthma (what, people can of their own decision actually switch their own stoves out to electric if it’s a problem for them??), but they’re pushing castration and major surgery on many more based on a feeling, you know there’s something nefarious going on.

      1. It’s not a real problem, it’s a pretext.

        The most commonly adopted US building codes for homes, the 2015 or 2018 IRC requires make up air for combustion as well as a filter or exhaust hood at a cooing appliance. The issue is already addressed.

        I assume that Ontario requires the same thing. I haven’t checked, but I assume they have stopped using their own provincial code in favor of the National model code, but who knows. The last time i looked the Ontario code over, is was about the worst organized mess I’ve seen.

    1. Bingo ……… Our annual safety meeting every spring involves WHMIS training. Safety data sheets etc for the younger workers, yet almost all of them are vaxxed and what safety data sheets did they have for what was injected right into them?

  26. 40% of all households rely on a gas stove. 90% of all professional chefs use a gas stove.
    A couple of facts:
    1. Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren are the main politicians pushing for legislation to ban them.
    2. There was an $840 rebate buried in the “Inflation Reduction Act” for people who purchase Electric ranges. That was not a coincidence.
    3. The primary basis for this perceived and anticipated ban is NOT the health of children. This is highlighted by the Public Safety Commission and those politicians pushing for the ban stating that “nitrogen dioxide emitted from gas stoves and ovens can rise above safe standards set for outdoor pollution.” This negates the application of effective range hoods to remove the health risk.

    This will be an interesting process that will be tied up in the Courts. The current administration will circumvent the Legislature by trying a ban through executive order where the public safety commission will essentially write the legislation. So, will the House have the backbone to challenge?

      I have never understood the rationale behind low flow fixtures if you don’t live in a desert. Pretty much 100% of water that doesn’t end up on the lawn goes back in the river. Also plumbing works better with more water. No lingering turds.

    2. Despite the fact that water is the most recycled thing that there has ever been. In fact the use of waterless urinals and 1.6 gallon WCs often forces municipal sewerage authorities to add fresh water to the “soup” to get the sewerage to break down correctly.

      It’s all about someone appearing to do some kind of good at the cost of the citizen. They think it’s cheap, or even free. It’s certainly free to them, of course.

  29. Day 2 of no electricity here in Sacramento.

    I was able to take a warm shower and have my coffee this morning thanks to clean-burning natural gas.

    These same effheads who have done ZERO over the last 20 yes to build water storage capacity and management—while we receive 14 trillion gallons of H2O—are, with this nat gas banning BS, again showing that they are fundamentally anti-human idiots. They can frankly eff-off, or will have to re-learn some lessons from the late 18th century.

  31. My wife and I bought a propane gas-heating stove for our cabin on the Miramichi rivet. Propane is heavily used with rural cottages for a lot of things. Someone on this thread mentioned that some crackpots are thinking banning wood stoves. Six years s we also bought a wood-stove insert in Fredericton — mostly as an insurance against power outages in the winter.

    I suspect that given the move towards EVs etc. will lead to more electric power outages. We’re a nordic country. We need alternatives to electric heating.

    1. In the mean time, Sweden has to IMPORT combustible wood, pellets and manufactured briquettes, and the like from North America to meet requirements they put down in their laws.

Without homes, over open fires, huddled in freezing rains or snow, unarmed and helpless, without money or resources, and awaiting the next aid convoy to dole out the dregs they want to give us.

    But no government employee in Ottowa or DC has any intention of giving up their modern life.

  34. So, do I have to worry about them banning barbecues next? And what about my propane fireplace which I use sparingly only extra cold days and when there is a power failure.
