  1. Tonight’s selection on TCM’s Noir Alley (The Third Man) couldn’t be shown, probably due to broadcasting rights. I’d already seen the substitute, Jack of Diamonds (and wasn’t impressed with it), so I decided to watch this little gem, Ladies Who Do, which I discovered quite by accident on YouTube:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bPqVxwtJkOI

It’s a delightful British comedy starring Robert Morley and Peggy Mount. Fans of the original Upstairs, Downstairs will likely recognize Lady Prudence (Joan Bentham). The cast also includes Ron Moody and a future Doctor Who.

    1. I’ve requested “The Third Man” from my library and am looking forward to watching it. I went through a Graham Greene phase in my twenties but never watched any film adaptations.

      1. The Third Man stars Joseph Cotten and Orson Welles (who worked together before, including in Citizen Kane) as well as Trevor Howard. Watch for Bernard Lee an early role before he became the original movie M.

Much of the dialogue is in German, but translations aren’t provided, at least not when I’ve seen it. There sometimes are advantages to knowing another language….

      2. The Third Man was directed by Carol Reed. A few years later, he directed the film adaptation of another Graham Greene novel, Our Man In Havana (Sir Alec Guiness, Maureen O’Hara, Sir Noel Coward, Burl Ives, and Ernie Kovacs).

  2. Visualizing where Covid 19 fits on the scale of previous pandemics is interesting.

It’s not very impressive so far but the mutations may make it up quickly.

It does not seem to need the fake hysteria by the lab coats and sleazy politicians that finally have a reason to exhibit their latent Type A personality disorders that they are suffering from.

Their cure so far seems to be worse than the sickness itself.

      1. I remember the wailing and lamentation in the news that the Hong Kong flu was going to be a country-killer. It was nasty, but nowhere near that bad.

The same thing was said about the swine flu a few years later.

  3. And now the Liberal Party’s CBC this morning. The Conservative Party is a failure because they won’t address the most important issue facing Canadians, which of course is global warming. Only Blackie can save us. We must all stay inside and not have fun this spring and summer, or we will all die from the China virus. Blackie is doing a wonderful job with vaccines. Blackie is wonderful. Mounties are racist against the Boushie family. Indians have every right to ransack farms. Canadians are racist bastards.

  4. Off with Jay Baker’s head. If this botched reporting isn’t typical of American media, I don’t know what is:

“He was pretty much fed up, kind of at the end of his rope, and yesterday was a really bad day for him and this is what he did,” said Baker. The comment struck many people as overly sympathetic toward Long, as if Baker was making excuses for someone who stands accused of killing six Asian-American women in cold blood. A 20-second video clip of Baker’s statement was shared on Twitter by Vox journalist Aaron Rupar and swiftly went viral, earning widespread condemnation. Many saw it as evidence that cops are desperate to discount the culpability of white male criminals. For instance, Kimberlé Crenshaw, a law professor and inventor of the term “intersectionality,” described Baker’s comments as “bone-chilling,” and castigated him for refusing to acknowledge “the misogynistic dimensions of anti-Asian racism.”

A police officer excusing Long’s actions as merely the result of him having a “bad day” would indeed be contemptible. But that’s not what Baker did. In fact, many of the people so infuriated about the quote were misled by Rupar’s edit of the video.

The full video (the relevant section starts at about 13:50) makes clear that Baker was not providing his own commentary, but rather summarizing what Long had told the investigators. The “bad day” line was proceeded by a clarification that this was Long’s own explanation, as related to the police. Baker did not endorse it.
Jay Baker was PARAPHRASING the shooting suspect not offering his own description or opinion.

    1. Does the Jay Baker story remind you of anything? If this kind of trick was rare, it could be chalked up to an honest mistake. But, consider the Covington kids. That shit show targeted innocent children. Most of the media figures, who vilified those high school kids, have withdrawn their remarks and apologized, but there are still hold outs (Sen Warren, Rep Haaland) who are hiding behind the shield of congressional privilege to lie and defame. This case is pending before the Supreme Court.
Then there is the recent claim that Trump attempted to intimidate the Georgia Secretary of States’ Office and that he was going to be subject to criminal prosecution for his alleged threats. The quotes attributed to him were fabricated, they were bogus.
Sharyl Attkisson, journalist, has documented some of the more egregious examples of lies about Trump.
As an American, when an inflammatory story hits the media, I, like most people I know, don’t take it seriously, anticipating that some of the truth will trickle out in the weeks and sometimes months to follow. I give you the George Floyd story. Most people have heard the inculpatory evidence but not the exculpatory

  5. I learn something every day. New York Times explains that the killings in Atlanta were caused because evangelical Christians are sexually dysfunctional.

  6. Meanwhile, flights from China and other countries are arriving in Canada daily. I guess the quarantine hotels are bursting at the seams.
I wonder how variants are arriving?

  7. This is an excellent video on the Covid scam, with damning comments about the vaccine. Watch it all through, you won’t be disappointed:

    https://thehighwire.com/videos/the-biggest-experiment-ever-done/

Synopsis: “The world is being turned into an animal experiment. And you, and our children, are the animals being tested. This is so scandalous. And so horrifying.”

Beginning at about halfway through the video, Dr Bhakdi gives a wonderful and very simple description of how the body’s natural defense forces send an army of killer lypmphocytes to destroy any cells that contain the virus.

“And you can bet your life,” says Dr Bhakdi, “that you already have these killer lymphocytes in your body…. and that is why we believe it is so damned difficult to die of this virus.”

    1. Thanks Mark. Someone here at SDA posted another interview that Dr Sucharit Bhakdi gave in January.

This one is shorter in length but the good Doctor’s interview was just as perfect, clear and well said. I believe his every word.

As living organisms our bodies are perfectly designed to fight off the diseases that we need them to fight off, provided we take care of our bodies.

      1. It’s not just the first day of spring, but it’s also J. S. Bach’s 336th birthday. So, in observance, here’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 2:

        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IETYYTMtL6U

One story about that composition that I heard was that Paul McCartney had been watching a performance of it and the use of the piccolo trumpet inspired him to add it to the song Penny Lane.

        1. That’s all such wonderful music, B!
I had a peaceful lunch — with sights of photos, purple hyacinths, white to gold daffodils, and popping shades of seemingly fresh-looking tulips, and then J.S. Bach, a Brandenburgische Konzert, on Bach’s birthday. Thanks!

        2. Maybe not quite yet to celebrate Johaan, but loved your choice of music. I think you might be celebrating a bit early, as March 31 might be the correct day, but never mind. The Brandenburg Concertos are my very favourite classical music.
          https://www.britannica.com/biography/Johann-Sebastian-Bach

I studied classical Royal Ballet of Canada as a child, until my feet grew to size 10.5, pretty much precluding a career in point dance. That said, ballet study introduces one to classical and folk music, discipline, poise grace and joy in movement.

I also have a close relative who studied with John S. Bach.
John was a Calgarian Mount Royal College music teacher and an actual descendent of the original famous musician. This relative began study with a 1/4 size violin at age 3, later winning many awards at festvals held at SAIT, and two silver medals from Alberta, partly due to the luck of having “perfect pitch”, family support and this person’s own enjoyment and effort, including being a member of the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra before it became internationally professional. Obviously, lovely music was part of my growing-up experience. I also went to that red brick building, mentioned in the article below, in downtown Calgary, where Mr. John S. Bach taught my relative to make beautiful violin music. I recall waiting for the lesson to end so that we could go and play.

  8. Life is wonderful in Israel – provided you have had the jab:

OUTCRY TO THE WORLD, FROM ISRAEL!!! PFIZER OVERRULES ISRAEL UNDER CORONAVIRUS LIES

  9. If you want to see how insane environmental loons and environment conscience Indians can be, then check out the Chatelaine Magazine website. Major story on how industrial projects in Canada must be shut down because of environmental racism against Indians and blacks. We must all live in log cabins in the bush. However we can’t get to close to indians as we may breathe our germs on them. And indian families are going to starve because they can’t find moose, because of logging or something. Worth a read to see how screwed our country is becoming.

      1. I swear, just when I think I’ve seen it all, I come across another “woke” business/company. As a home sewist, I love purchasing and downloading layered PDFs from independent pattern companies. Lately, I’ve noticed several companies have either removed or renamed their patterns for Kimonos, because, you know, cultural appropriation. They even go so far as to apologize if they caused any offence. Good grief! Enough already!

        1. My late mother was a fashion designer by trade. During her apprenticeship, she learned all about the history of apparel and how various features on modern clothing originated.

She was the sinophile in the family, having read just about every novel by Pearl Buck she could find. But her interest in things Chinese also extended to clothing and traditional costumes. To her, the qipao (also known as cheongsam) was a thing of beauty and she was fascinated by how they were designed and made.

I guess my dear departed mother was secretly a racist, eh?

Butterick and McCall going “woke”….. Just when I thought I’d seen it all….

          1. The cheongsam is a lovely garment and there are many vintage sewing patterns for them. Once the style was no longer fashionable, the patterns were relegated to the Costumes section. Since when did sewing become racist? I guess nothing should surprise us anymore.

  10. For your science fiction entertainment, how about Star Cops:

    https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCQVzGcmBoDakdJv7JH-DYlg/videos

I was introduced to the series through the PBS station we get here in Edmonton. It’s available on DVD, but it’s only in the European PAL video format. You can still watch it if you have a player that can handle it, but the images aren’t as crisp as they should be.

By the way, the series is set later this decade when we’re supposed to have a permanent habitation on the moon. In some ways, it was prophetic. For example, it anticipated a device similar to the smartphone.

  11. Blackie’s loyal CBC reports this afternoon that Canadians are racist bastards towards Asians. Blackie also released a statement, agreeing with his CBC that Canadians are racist bastards towards Asians. To quote Rex Murphy, why does Trudeau hate us so much?
