I’ve come to the same conclusion. If you are just going to print money, why not close down the CRA? Clearly the government doesn’t need the money. It would be the ultimate stimulus, actually letting people keep their own money. It would actually boost the economy. Of course, the thought experiement reveals another purpose of taxation, to keep intrusively reminding the populace who the boss is, the keep the serfs in line.

The only reason we have taxes is to maintain the collective fiction that money is still worth something. When people begin to realize that it’s not, the modern economy collapses and we revert to barter. This has happened a number of times in the past.
I think this is one of the major reasons for the recent upsurge in home sales. People instinctively know that they might as well buy something real with their money while they still can.
