Natural gas shortages and frozen wind turbines were already curtailing power output when the Arctic blast began knocking generators offline early Monday morning.
The Electric Reliability Council of Texas, or ERCOT, which is responsible for scheduling power and ensuring the reliability of the electrical network, declared a statewide power generation shortfall emergency and asked electricity delivery companies to reduce load through controlled outages.
More than 4 million customers were without power in Texas, including some 1.2 million in the Houston area, the worst power crisis in the state in a decade. The forced outages are expected to last at least through part of Tuesday, the state grid manager said.
They think its bad during a snow storm now, wait till Pervert Joe unleashes his global warming scams.

Now with Joe Biden in charge, it is only a matter of time for the American oil industry to reach the depths of the oil industry depression in Alberta.
The Houston Chronicle article says the gas fired plants were designed using best practices for winter weather.
Having worked in the energy industry for many years, I’ve always laughed at Texan’s cold weather designs.
The article also says a root cause was Texas’ deregulated power grid. Electricity prices were too low to allow operators to have more capacity. They’ll love the new Biden Administration. Electricity prices are going to go way way up. And for what? During snow, sleet, cold weather, the additional windmills will be frozen, and the solar panels will be covered with snow.
And the article also blames the electricity outages on Texas not being connected to the rest of the US grid. Yet the same article mentions blackouts in 14 other central states.
What will they learn from this?
Nothing.

The plain, unvarnished truth of it is; unreliable power keeps getting pushed, till it kills enough people. Until the bureaucrats pushing unreliable power, are the ones without power, until they are the ones freezing to death, it continues. It does not matter how bad it is for you. The people in charge, do not suffer for being wrong.
Look at all the examples. Detroit, California, Baltimore. No trash pickup, daily shootings. All the same people still in charge, still making the same decisions, never missing a meal, never suffering a break-in, never losing any sleep, defined benefit pensions secure.

My wife’s nephew lives in Houston and is watching Texas gradually becoming a blue state as people from places like California run away from their destruction and now infect Texas.
Remember that the worldwide goal, as espoused and declared by the UN, is Agenda 21 – the overall reduction of the population to 2% or less of its current level. OTOH I wonder how much of the ‘power plants knocked off line’ was due to the ice storm felling trees and lines and how much to lack of fuel. One of the major advantages of nukes and coal is the large amount of onsite fuel, which unless the coal pile is a frozen ice block at -50C is still usable. NG plants subject to vagaries of supply, which if unka jo has anything to do with it will become a more significant problem in 5-7 yrs. Also wonder why some ice on the blades would shut down a windmill, seems like at a certain point the ice would be
slung off, or maybe they were shut down because to many power lines were down and just gradually accumulated ice making for a nice picture and then the ice build up was too assymmetric to safely restart the blades…..???? Just curious.
Blades aren’t designed for the rotating weight.
If a a ice chunk falls off one blade, it throws the balance off. Muy bad.
Further, the blades have a aerodynamics shape best designed to catch wind, just like a aircraft wing. And like a aircraft wing a blade can loose lift.
