I find the whole thing laughable, having worked around hydrofluoric acid and hydrogen sulphide gas during my time in the oil industry. Those are two of the most dangerous substances known to man.
HF acid corrodes steel and etches glass. I’ve heard it said that when it comes in contact with one’s skin, it feels like being stuck with a hot poker. Even residual amounts, such as from dried droplets, can cause irritation.
We always made sure that whatever gear we used or brought into the unit was properly cleaned and decontaminated and we always knew where a tub full of alkaline solution was just in case.
H2S is nasty stuff. In mild concentrations, it dulls one’s sense of smell and one doesn’t notice the odour after a few minutes. In many gas plants, though, it’s lethal. Exposure can result in immediate loss of consciousness and a paralysis of the respiratory system. If one isn’t brought into fresh air in 2 or 3 minutes, it’s game over.
I learned to treat H2S with great respect. I learned how to use a Scott air pack and, if there might be gas in whichever building we went into, we always acted as if there was and wore our breathing apparatus. The only exception would be if a plant operator went through with a sniffer and then cleared us to go in.
We took our time with our work, moving quickly only in an emergency. We always knew how to get out and where the exits were, and we always made sure we knew where our partners were as we might be the ones who had to get them out.
Taking proper precautions reduced our chances of injury. That way, when we went through the plant gate at quitting time, we could say we had a good day.

This certainly includes our ‘leaders’ but there the fear is never letting a crisis go to waste.

The examples posted by others above are the Karens who have risen to positions of power. What I’m trying to add is those who assume they have the position of power and impose their interpretation of the rules on those around them “for their own good” as though they have power. If this is a different type of Karen then we’ll need two terms to distinguish.
The most interesting aspect of Karenoia is that the fake victim is really the aggressor. Even while they continue to attempt to control our language and our thoughts it is important to bombard them with truth.
The average citizens who do that do so out of a false sense of civic duty, believing that they are committing an act of patriotism (often referred to as the last refuge of scoundrels) and they are, thereby, important.

For some reason I get really niggled by those Karens in the entertainment industry, like Jennifer Laurence, Allysa Milano, Michael Moore, Alec Baldwin, and singers like Cher and Streisland who seem to think that their opinions and thoughts are what we should all be paying attention to! They have a platform and misuse it for their disdain of people such as Trump, and gun owners, and anyone on the political right. For crying out loud they are pompous self involved entertainers, who have elevated themselves to be our chastisers and think they can tell us off, because we don’t agree with their distorted view of things. Man, they really frost my socks. There are so many of them, that it is a very long list, of useless narcissistic A$$holes!

You’re missing the base substance of what makes up a “Karen.” They don’t have any investment in their position. It is the ambition to feel relevant and nothing more. “FEEL” is the key word in the previous. It’s not about beneficence. It is a deeply personal, selfish, and self-important goal, born out of a society centered on immediate gratification and a sense of “importance” (see the emphasis put on “likes” and “subscriptions” these self-important troglodytes covet).
I don’t classify the likes of Newsom or any other person in a position of power as a “Karen.” They are merely tyrants who use the former as their foot soldiers to achieve their ultimate goal…power of course.

While sitting in my office a good few years ago, I looked across the street and demolition was happening. I could see that none of the workers had hard hats. i called the WCB and let them know. Within an hour all worked stopped. Later after lunch work resumed with workers wearing nice new yellow hardhats. Doing this, did it make me a Karen.
Do you pay to support WCB? Do you pay into the medical system that would treat them? Do you enjoy it when a dumbass is killed from a chance incident, as opposed to being embarrassed?
The Karenness applies to forcing others to do your bidding, sometimes with force of law behind it, so they can see your face, know you’re imposing your rules on them, and be ashamed. You didn’t confront them directly. You pointed out illegal actions to a governing body in control of workplace safety, and there was no public chastisement.
Being a Karen would be showing up at the edge of the dig/demolition, demanding everything stop while you speak to the person in charge (because you’re important, so the lesser beings aren’t worth your time) and explain the colour of hard-hat that everyone should be wearing and why their mud-splattered vests aren’t reflective enough.
