      1. My first fear was that the government was putting us in a position of financial servitude to China. There are a number of horror stories of other countries in that position and the tragic results for those peoples.

        I think a 50 cent dollar is preferable to financial servitude. While the cost of imports will go up, it may lead to cheaper exports. If we can attract jobs back to Canada via a cheaper dollar then this could be worth it.

If there is no increase in the size of the economy every dollar they create means the one you already have in your pocket is worth less. The best tactic now is to borrow as much money as you can and pay it off later with future dollars that aren’t worth all that much.

    I applaud Trump for removing barriers to rapid testing of ideas. I don’t care if most don’t work. Some will work, or partially work. The anecdotal success stories spur more innovation, building on successes and analyzing failures.

I am miffed that Priests have been banned from saying mass or in helping to comfort the elderly who are near death in nursing homes or have died in isolation away from loved ones during this pandemic. Some Priests have taken themselves out of harms way in some misconstrued belief that they are too important to be sacrificed and must survive to serve another day. To serve who exactly?

    This goes against the very essence of sacrifice, love, compassion and service to God. It is a slap in the face to the teachings of Jesus Christ. Christ himself went among the sick and infirmed to dispense love and hope to those suffering and dying. He was not afraid of the lepers of his day. That is the true calling and vocation of the Priesthood. To save souls and service the sick and to comfort the dying. They should be on the front lines of this pandemic and not hiding behind the secular presence of the military.

    2. It is a mistaken belief that everyone exposed to the virus is going to get sick. That’s what our immune systems are for and 90% + of the population is able to resist the virus. When they don’t, it is because the immune system is compromised or because they have a particularly strong exposure to the virus, so the virus takes hold. For some reason, this virus is not being treated like other viruses. It is a nasty one if you get it, but most people will not get it. That should be obvious from the current numbers. Normal viruses go away in the spring as people get more sunlight. They also lose transmission rates after 40 days or so. Locking people up is not such a great idea.

Seemed to work fine back then.

    Lockdowns don’t cure the spread of the virus. We will always let travelers into the country and that will restart viral spreading.

    We have learned that the virus kills mainly the elderly.

    We suspect that many people get the virus and never show any symptoms. Does this work to our advantage in how to deal with the virus?

    Before people explode with ‘every life is precious’, we have to realize that life is precious but involves a series of risk and reward trade offs. For example, we make that decision every time we get into a car.

    Would the death and injury rate for those under 60, from reopening the economy, be any worse than the death and injury rate from traffic accidents? Before answering please consider that we are likely to have an additional wave of virus cases, and perhaps multiple waves until a vaccine is developed (if one is developed). How many additional people will die from a lack of cancer care, heart surgery, etc? How about the death and hardships from economic devastation?

    Difficult questions, but it’s time for adult discussions. For the above reasons I applaud Legault for starting that discussion.

  24. Simple solution to the meat processing plants in Alberta and rest of Canada.

    My suggestion:

    Shut down plant for two weeks (isolation), after that test everybody’s temperature as they enter …. and have the physical government meat inspectors required to be on the job site … any sign of an illness – send worker home for two weeks with pay.

    Although in two weeks I’m quite sure that there will be 15 – 20 minute test for C – 19.

        The idea of testing is then to follow up with tracing, but if people are asymptomatic nothing is going to help, unless everyone wears a mask. The wearing of a mask will help contain the spread of your spittle, which may help contain the spread of the virus. It will not likely stop you from getting it in a myriad of other ways.

        I’m wondering where the caretaker of the Lake home gets to stay since HRH is planning to have his place moved. For one thing, wherever it is, most likely, that is the most logical place for it to be. Why move it? Will a new one have to be built?

        It is costly to move a house because a new foundation has to be poured. If there are any electrical wires in the way they must be professionally raised. The house then can be moved by professional house movers. (Ka-ching! Ka-ching!) Not to mention, there’s the eyesore left where the place was, to clean up. Most of the time it is more economical to build a new place.

  31. I wanted to post the following and ask for feedback from SDAers. It involves a simple calculation to show that the impact of the Wuhan Flu shutdown has overwhelmingly been on the private sector. And it is not an analysis that you will ever see being provided by the mainstream media.

    There have now been 7.12 million “unique applicants” for the federal government’s CERB (Canada Emergency Response Benefit) program. In February, pre-lockdown, there were 19.2 million employed Canadians. 12.4 million were employed in the private sector, 2.9 million were self-employed and 3.9 million worked in the public sector. Since there have been hardly any layoffs announced in the public sector (none at the federal level; none in either Quebec or Ontario), it is appropriate to consider all of the the 7.12 million CERB applicants as being from the private and self-employed sectors. That means 7.12 million out of the 12.4 million private sector and 2.9 million self-employed in February ( a total of 15.3 million) have lost their jobs, which amounts to a staggering 46.5 %.

    Do the mechanics of this calculation make sense to you? I appreciate any feedback, will adjust the simple methodology as required, and post any updates here in Kate’s daily reader comments.

      But did you know that under the right conditions both water and oxygen can be toxic to humans?

      Remember the Australian doctor who for years said ulcers were caused by bacteria? He was ridiculed by the medical establishment and all experts. Turns out he had to give himself the bacteria, which caused him to develop a bad ulcer. He then treated himself with antibiotics and was cured. When my mum had an ulcer, we had to scream at her doctors to give her antibiotics. They finally relented and she got better quickly.
