People in positions of influence read this site. Instead of complaints about the costs and compromise to civil liberties, let’s hear your ideas.
Here’s mine: implement the “work camp” model for manufacturers, distributors and processing facilities of essential goods and services.
Make rapid COVID tests available to these employers: all employees would be tested prior to the commencement of each crew shift, then housed in designated hotels or work trailers (lots of those sitting idle in the oil industry) before being swiitched out for the next crew at the end of their rotation.
Two weeks in, one week out. If it can work for mining, it can work for industry in general.
The “clean workplace” model could be expanded or adjusted as necessary to fit other commercial facilities, with the primary goal to protect employees from one another,
Your turn.

The cost of housing and feeding a company’s workforce would be prohibitively expensive for most businesses. Unless the workers were willing to accept a 50% wage cut, most businesses would close rather than go to the expense of setting up and maintaining camps.
The better solution would be to quarantine those most at risk, such as the elderly and especially those made vulnerable by identifiable medical conditions, along with those who have to work with them.
Anyone entering the country through an airport would immediately be tested and quarantined until test results are confirmed. That is, if we would allow private, for profit testing facilities to exist, so that these tests could be done in a timely manner.
You’re born with a one way ticket. People die…get over it.
Open up the K-12 schools first, like in Denmark.
Parks also need to open. That would sll8w some semblance of normalcy with little risk if an advosory on large groups and social distances was retained.
Everyone of us takes risks each day. Similarly we have risks thrust upon us each day. For example; driving a car, a 1 in 8500 chance of dying each year in the US. Similarly, a bad flu year. Yet we as a society accept these risks.
So now the question is “how much risk does COVID-19 present?” We will have to address that question and we will have imperfect knowledge to make that decision.
I have asked at this site what level of risk would be acceptable to go back to work. No one answered. I have yet to see any politician; Trump, Biden, Trudeau, or Scheer, etc. answer that question. Similarly the main street media seems silent on this vital issue.
We also have to balance the cost of the shutdown in lives against the loss of life from the virus.
So as a first step, I would like to see how total deaths from all causes plots against previous years. I might be wrong, but this could give us a better handle on how serious the virus is compared to our normal existence. It should be done for countries, but also for states and provinces like New York, Quebec, Ontario.
A phased restart to smooth out the demand on hospitals.
Return everyone to duties under 45, then later 45-60, then 60 – 70. Everyone older remains in isolation.
Of course everything that Taiwan does, including masks, should be done all the while.
Maintain social distancing as much as possible such as minimizing meetings of large groups.
It occurs to me that the government should have had a reopening task force in place and planning for reopening the minute they did the totalitarian shut down. If yes, they have had 30 days now. What are the plans? Perhaps some enterprising journalist could investigate. If they have no plans, were they planing a lock down forever? If they have no plans, this is gross incompetence. Who is in charge of reopening? Anyone?
Opening up is not going to be up to Trudeau.
He abdicated his responsibilities.
The provinces will decide when they open. The premiers as a group could run the country with one hand tied behind their back with their eyes closed and deliver good governance to the public.
But we are stuck with sockboy and his specially selected minions where experience and competence are irrelevant.
Well, then, the provinces should have plans in place for reopening. What are they waiting for?
Chi-com-covid & climate cult
Commenters noting some similarities,
especially:
Use of models & projections
Fear drivers in population
Opportunities for authoritarians
Both are fear pathogens, invisible & rely on experts
That said:
climate cultists project decades into future, chi-com-covid is up in our grills right now. I’m not convinced that tens, of thousands of drs nurses etc are in on a great worldwide conspiracy
There’s a great dangerous parallel tho, for years we’ve watched the cult pick up steam and we still have no way to effectively counter its infection of our institutions. Now its a key ingredient of an emerging religion, that threatens to turn our democracies into authoritarian theocracies.
Where the death rate ends up is vitally important, but not right now, arguing if its the same as flu seems to miss the point. This isn’t a decades in the future the world will end unless we yada yada now.
Right now it’s being effectively used to destroy our economy & freedoms & if successful, that cost will dwarf all others.
Prudence says act in a rational & golden rule manner against the chi-com-covid but also in a manner that mitigates human threats. We need solutions that mitigate both the viral threat and the cultist authoritarian threat.
What are simple, reasonable, & in the main, inexpensive things we can each do to mitigate against a new viral threat, that also mitigates against the eternal human threats of authoritarians in their various modes & disguises.
Climate cult has been coming at us for decades & too many still act like deer in headlights. Recall all the damage Trudeau & his fellow new religion theocrats did to us in the months between the election & the chi-com-covid wave hitting our shores.
Think back to a simpler time when the Syrian civil war was almost immediately weaponized against western lib democracies.
It’s not a world wide conspiracy. It’s mass hysteria driven by media fear mongering and a herd mentality. Even politicians follow the herd. It takes courage to choose a different path, even when that path is the logical, sensible thing to do. Politicians are autocrats and cowards.
Solutions?
Everybody under the threshold should be working. Period.
It is too bad that this has to be even mentioned, clean life is most of the way to success. Clean life though is not something that the multitudes are there to accept. Too much bother one guesses.
Tell the idiot politicians that it’s ok, you’re not going to blame them when some get sick. People will get sick, it’s the nature of things.
In defence of the politicians, they have no way out, whatever they do is no good or is good depending on which way the wind blows.
Actually it’s dependent on what the media cartel goes with, what propaganda they adopt. And propaganda it will be for they don’t know, if there were not blogs like this one they would be totally lost. Really.
Nobody wants to be sick, nobody plans to be sick, nobody enjoys being sick. Sick happens. In the best of circumstances.
One can do their bloody best to prevent being sick. Sick happens. Let everyone do their absolutely best to prevent from being sick.
Old guys like your agent is doing his best, with any of that and some luck things will work out for meny more years.
So open for business, keep the hygiene high, those over the threshold watch how you behave. Do those things that are smart, be aware.
This is from no influencer. Nobody you should pay particular attention to. Just a guy with a point of view.
Thanking Ms. Kate for letting it happen.
Lets get the banks involved. Use them as an advisory board for input to restart the economy.
Freeze the trading of Canadian Bank stocks
Canadian Banks profit is limited to the current level of default to cover losses. Credit Unions must do the same.
This remains in place for 6-12 months past the time Trudeau, Hajdu, Morneau and Dr. Tam reopen the economy.
Let the Banks light a fire under their asses.
Credit card interest should be halved at least until Canadians are allowed back to work.
Interest only for Mortgages. No repossesions allowed until a period of 1 year after the economy is restarted
Ban Chinese companies from takeover or any large investment into Canadian companies
Ban Canadian pension plans, banks and investment houses from investing further in China.
The Canadian government will not backstop pension plans past investments in China
We need to disregard government help.they have demonstrated both their competence and usefulness for all to see.
To get back to business?
Hang all our politicians and fire all civil servants.
But that will not happen.
Next?
Provinces and rural regions will have to recognize their advantage, over Federal Government and cities.
Pandemic can only be faced locally, isolating work sites is helpful as it will reduce worker stress, but you have to make room for the families,so those would be company towns..
Which responded very well to past pandemics.
Building isolation fences around our few big cities would provide great entertainment.
But the biggest problem ,apart from Canada’s bankruptcy,is FEAR.
Our Professional help is not helping, they are (deliberately?) spreading fear and confusion.
And because they have delusions of adequacy, they will constantly hinder every attempt to get our businesses up and running again.
So forget bright ideas for restarting the Canadian Economy,we will do nothing until the Americans rescue us once again.
Except shriek;”Orange Man Bad”.
Soon there will be a cheap,in store self test for this virus ,we will be able to test for ourselves, whether we carry this infection, whether we have had it.
Then we can make informed decisions.
Now these viruses tend to mutate over time, either losing their edge or becoming so deadly that they kill all who could spread them.
What this one will do?
We will see.
If it remains in it’s current form,we will need to voluntarily catch it just to get it over with.
Like the measles parties my mother and her friends organized,as once one child had these ,there was no way to stop the rest catching it.
Their reasoning was let us all catch it,get it over all at once.
Given all the current shutdown has accomplished is buy us time, controlled infection may be the only practical way forward.
Now every day buys the so far uninfected time for a miracle.
But barring that miracle cure,we have to settle down and recognize the cost of living is death.
Our immune system exists for a reason and already it is pretty damn clear the majority of infected humans are barely impacted..
So why the panic attacks?
I don’t suppose any of you remember the purpose of this post? It was quite specific.
Well over at WUWT;
How to re-open the country and control COVID-19 #coronavirus
Leo Goldstein / 12 hours ago April 15, 2020.
But as a pessimist over the state of Canada, this discussion assumes we have an economy to restart.
I suspect Gerald and Justine have solved the “restart problem”,by killing the patient.
We will restore our normal lives and freedoms as we cast aside our “Helpers” wisdom.
Contact tracing. Shut the friggin’ border, especially to known hot spots, until they clean their act up. No refugees, long lost relatives, or special deals for favored groups of people . Quarantine entrants, sick of not. Manufacture our own medical stuff and kill the .gov unions. I won’t pay taxes to ANY .gov this day that lectures me on living after they already failed to do their jobs, via unionized .gov “workers”. They aren’t working for me when foreign folks waltz right in at an airport, international or domestic with no restrictions. Back it u with well armed troops if you have to. NO special deals with select ethnic/religious groups. If you can’t (won’t) enforce rules equally, you aren’t working for me. Declare martial law if no compliance. We are not a “post national country” if there is still a border between us and the USA.
If you think that China just forgot to declare war on us, think again. Any mainland Chinese didn’t get out of the country to live somewhere else with a low Social Score. The low SS were viewed dead in locked down buildings or burning ones (how convenient) on https://twitter.com/PhdParody and it’s still going on. Check it out. Go back as far as you can. The LPOC are not our friends in this. They and their corporate buddies have been up to their eyeballs with the Chicoms for decades. Read Sidewinder. Do some work for a change and look it up.
Accept anecdotal evidence from frontline physicians who are sharing their successes online to save lives.
Compile their results.
Distribute their findings under a Best Management Practice guideline and distribute it nationally.
Stop listening to policy driven doctors that have NO Firsthand Experience with this virus.
Dont let the WHO be your channel of information, they have been corrupted.
Another branch of government famously said “You go to war with the army you have, not the army you want”.
Lot’s of good ideas above, but mostly all of them have the same major flaw…
They could never be achieved in today’s hyper-partisan political landscape.
So, who is going to advocate for and champion the country on embracing these good ideas? Trudeau?…. ha!, Scheer?…. tripleha!, Ford?… ha!, Singh?… ha!, Kenney?… ha!, Bernier?… haha! The blowback from Canadian elitists aimed at anyone threatening both their narrative and authority would be fierce. There is not currently a single element of Canadian society that has anything close to the combined power of progressive socialists and their activist media partners.
Maybe a more realistic conversation would be about how we can possibly get the Trudeau Liberals and their media minions to support ANYTHING that Conservatives say is good for Canada? But we have already been having that conversation for a damn long time, haven’t we, and the closest thing we can find to an acceptable answer is WEXIT.
Still, it was nice and nostalgic to hear Conservatives talking like we still had some political influence left in this country.
One thing that could be done (locally, as it were) is start teaching people how to be self-sufficient so that when crises like these pop up, they are not freaking out, being useless, lounging about the house in pajama pants and hoarding toilet paper.
How hard is it to save money to survive on for at least three months (perhaps then people would question how much their government takes from them but I digress …)?
Why not grow little planter gardens or start their own gardens if they hadn’t before?
Think of ways to stretch their food/food budget.
Spring clean early and often.
Think of ways to educate, entertain and keep the kids occupied.
Learn a new skill.
It’s like these ideas were foreign to people when this hit.
Tough to get people away from their iPhones and focus on what’s going on around them. Just watch them while headed to work on transit. zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. If an alien space craft landed on a house they wouldn’t bother looking up and consider it an annoyance to their perfect wurld if they did. Most people don’t read much, unless it’s on a 6″ electro screen. When they blame Boomers for their bad life choices, you know this place is already hooped. Worse, a lot of Boomers spawned these Klem Kadiddle Hoppers. Thanks to Red Skelton for that one, he wasn’t a Boomer.
Our sloth has made this problem much worse.
Gardening in Calgary, especially veggies is an art, not practiced by many. We’re at 3500 feet ASL 15 inches of rain annually. We’re also 52 degrees north latitude. Pots work best. Twenty years a (rare) gardener here.
Yes your right. Nothing would change if the province had no electricity.
Potential solutions, things that can help.
Home made masks & bandanas for everyone, now. How to get this done?
Who is good with marketing, influencing? Who has ability to run with this? Who would wear a bandana in public if it helped get economy coming back? How long will we wait?
Polling, what polling companies can trust to credibly survey changing landscape of public opinion. I’d especially like to know where people in greater Buffalo stand. What are trends? Where is there positive momentum, where are the knowledge gaps? How to address them?
Petitions: best support & inoculation for leaders against harmful bs is hundreds of thousands of citizens giving clear direction. Who knows how to word & initiate them?
Who knows of existing networks, organizations that could be mobilized?
Calgary stampede leadership? sports clubs? We can not wait for, or expect Gov to do it all.
Need to get good ideas flowing into public OODA loop. Speed & action are important.
Can contests, petitions, polling be done thru SDAers?
Kate’s idea regarding work is sound, creative. Where can this be used? Refinements? Adaptations?
Ideas in bullets would help others read & absorb, refine & pass on.
How do we get more ideas, more actionable items? Constructive criticism is good, contributions, ideas good.
Actionable ideas.
If not now, when? if not this, what?
I don’t trust polls as too many people just follow the media narrative, especially in Canada. Look at the general approval given to Trudeau in the midst of his utter destruction of the country.
People are lazy. Properties either side of me haven’t done a thing through successive owners, since the sod went down. All they did was buy a dog and pick up crap…sometimes and turn the rugrats loose. You want to motivate these people? Good luck. They can’t even shovel the sidewalk snow. Then they rent it out and the place looks like an Indian reserve. With a dog or two.
How do we get polls we can trust? Is there anyone in the SDA realm who is or works for a pollster? I share the basic distrust of polls found in mainstream media but never the less, some are better than others. Some no doubt are actually good, how do we learn of them & use them? We the people are our greatest strength, how do we hear from our fellow citizens? Would still like to believe in the silent majority notion.
Regarding Trudeaus apparent approval ratings, east or west canada? In Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal or in the rest the country that perhaps still has some functional self reliance instincts?
Register the youth 16 – 22 and, if not otherwise employed, except for those considered medically high risk, send them back to college and put them to work as the civilian conservation corps 2.0. Open up and commandeer every college: campus dorms and mess halls. Open up every camp ground/ national park and set up military mess tents. Put the military in charge and put the youth to work. Infrastructure, supply chain, food & farming. This is a low risk population that could develop herd immunity away from the old people and also develop confidence + long term skills.
In my state, with 2000+dead – a decent representative sample- the median age of those dying is 75 and the average 73. Let working age people go back to work. This is primarily a lower risk population. Give those with co-morbidities options to work at home, work in an elder bubble or go on short term disability. Let famers farm regardless of age.
Bubble off the old and at risk. Keep the old people on restriction until vaccine or herd immunity. Use hotels and particularly hotels with casinos and other enclosed entertainment to set up elder community bubbles. Provide jobs to the working age but otherwise at risk populations in the elder bubbles and set up supply chain servicing of bubble to dis-infect and otherwise prevent any outside contact.
Suspend all snail mail. Everything vital goes electronic if it isn’t already.
1 Get the Spawn off the airways. Download all protocols not specifically federal to the Provinces / cities / counties.
2 Most resource sector (Fishing, forestry, agriculture, Oil and Gas, mining, etc) job functions can work with reasonable social distancing (SD). Copper mining, concentrating, smelters, manufacturers likely don’t have to do much different as their fine product destroys the virus in a few hours of contact.
3 Retail store environments have to continue SD plus perhaps masks, temperatures, etc.
4 K-12 schools remain closed for remainder of term and use online resources which is their future anyway. Same with universities, tech schools unless distancing protocols can be established. For Fall term same protocols as spectator sports below.
5 No spectator sports or other close proximity events until new cases are below a conservative threshold (1/100,000?)
6 Office environments can figure out their own protocols with remote work being the obvious first choice
7 High risk individuals continue as now until the magic threshold is reached.
That’s not a bad idea at all. I’d add that people that have had the disease (sero+ qPCR-) should have no restrictions on them. I’d also add that if an effective treatment does pop up then we should accelerate easing of restrictions.
Late to the party again, evidently.
Don’t know if this link came from SDA or I just followed something else.
This makes perfect sense to me though not going to be popular with financial sector.
Fed gov. could implement this without any tax dollars but won’t.

I think the first step should be to release all young healthy individuals and get them back to work. This will do two things, kick start the economy and begin to build herd immunity.
The majority of working people are below the age of 50 and are relatively healthy, therefore they are at astronomically low levels of risk to die or even require hospitalization. However, we do need to understand that some will die.
Having the young back at work will keep the economy alive longer to slowly rolel out the sicker/older people back into society without overwhelming the healthcare system.
In the words of Major _______ De Coverley: Gimme eat. Give them all eat.
End the farce now.
