Why this blog?
Until this moment I have been forced to listen while media and politicians alike have told me "what Canadians think". In all that time they never once asked.
This is just the voice of an ordinary Canadian yelling back at the radio -
"You don't speak for me."

“can knob says Thank you for not threatening to kill me, too.”
like i said… cathy newman redux. now tell me about lobsters, knobbie.

Perhaps some commenters here should respect Kate McMillan’s admonition to “take your flame wars to private E-mail”.
I don’t disagree at all, sage advice.
To be clear, I didn’t intend to contribute to the thread going off course…..IT WAS ALL KENJI’S FAULT… LOL!
Have a great evening, everyone. That includes you, NEO.
got that right FQ, and just to reinforce the point, darned near every driver involved in a fatal accident started out with
tricycles, bicycles, toy wagons, whatnot.
the REAL statistic which you ignore is ‘how many pot smokers go on to hard recreational synthetics’?.
feel free to browse the thread just above this one about selectively manipulating statistics. aka ‘shiny gunslinger’
p.s. does booze help a host of medical maladies incl seizures, pain relief without getting blitzed, appetite enhancer for chemo patients?
I cant be bothered to list them and you wouldnt dare.
I think it will be interesting to see if the government can successfully push the gangs and their dealers out of business. The gangs have been doing this for a long time, and have a sophisticated dealer network, and a large supply of top grade product from the interior of B.C.
Come to think of it, The B.C. government could threaten to cut off the supply of B.C. bud to Alberta in retaliation to Alberta threatening to stop buying their mediocre wine. Tit for Tat.
We’ll have to commission a survey of the kids in the school yards to see who provides the better value. The government weed stores, or the tried and true local school yard dealer.
Wow … I focus on my work for a few hours and come back to see the sh*tstorm I started. Guys … easy! Can’t we all just get along?
As some of you may recall, one of my sons went full bi-Polar and schitzo at age 19. I can’t prove the connection … although there are many studies that support my belief … that my sons brain was scrambled by the HIGHLY POTENT dope that is sold today … esp. in all the SF Bay Area “medical” marijuana dispensaries. My straight-A (in 8th grade) was utterly WRECKED by smoking dope in HS. Lots of dope in HS despite our best efforts to stop it. Yeah, yeah, … millions of people smoke dope with no (supposedly) ill effect. However, IMO … no children … NONE … should EVER smoke dope. It should be ILLEGAL for kids … PERIOD! If adults want to tune out and get their smoke on … meh … I’m a (l)ibertarian … so knock yourself out -literally. There is enough evidence that today’s concentrated THC highly cultivated dope screws with children’s brain chemistry and wiring.
I have been thoroughly disgusted by the FAKE notion of weed being a “medicine” to get it legalized. I have always hated that FRAUD. All I know is that his mother and I found empty jar after empty jar of “medical” marijuana in our sons things. Was he able to purchase the dope right at the counter? Did he find one of the Quack Doctors who are writing “prescriptions”? Did some old burn-out “buy up” for him? All I know is that my kid got TONS of dope STRAIGHT FROM the so-called “medical marijuana” shops. THAT practice needs to be SHUT DOWN … immediately. NO DOPE for Kids.
And since I tend to sharrrrrre more than I should … you may also recall that I grew up with a fully dysfunctional DRUNK of a father … and I should tell you of his second wife … a Pediatrician who helped my father polish off a 5th of Jack Daniels every night. Yeah … she eventually lost her practice. So I also know full well what alcohol (abuse) can do to a life.
I hope dope won’t drive a wedge between us C.O. … I like almost everything else you post … so I hope we can agree to disagree and you won’t threaten to kick my ass like Joe Biden. And even better! I would hope you can agree with me that kids (in my opinion, up to age 21 at least) NOT be allowed to legally smoke the ganja. And that the dope industry RIGOROUSLY stop kids from obtaining their product.
*
“kenji says… scrambled by the HIGHLY POTENT dope”
let’s face it… the grow-op dope we have today (forcing chemicals
and timed sessions of high pressure sodium lighting on carefully
selected cultivars)… kicks the ass of the ditch weed we used to
smoke decades ago. the canadian medical association recommended
that the liberals set the age for justin’s legal weed at 21… citing
the fact that the brain’s plasticity is not fully resolved until the
age of 24.
the liberals chose to ignore that recommendation and, sadly, i fear,
someone else’s children (my 22 year old son has fortunately chosen
to refrain) will reap the pharmacological whirlwind.
what’s next… government subsidised whore coupons for those poor
sex addicts?
just my two cents.

ps… don’t take my word for it…
“Margaret Trudeau, who suffers from bipolar disorder,
spoke openly with reporters about her experience with
depression and the effect of her long-term marijuana use.
“Marijuana can trigger psychosis,” said Trudeau.
“Every time I was hospitalized it was preceded by heavy
use of marijuana.”
*
I’m sure Margaret will be over the moon having her son make marijuana legal.
I do hope each package comes with possible side effects to include long term use might cause mental illness.
Thank you, Neo … for putting flesh on the bones of my argument.
“I hope dope won’t drive a wedge between us C.O. …”
No worries, I guess you understand now that I consider ‘dope is poison’ as provocative a dishonest mantra as ‘Trump is racist’. I believe you and I have ‘back-and-forthed’ before about ‘bunkered mentalities’, this topic in particular seems to bring them out in droves. As I have come to expect of YOU, you have explained well the reason behind your strong bias.
I won’t bang on about my opinion on weed, but here’s a couple of vital points I hope we can at least partially agree on….
Pot is HERE and NEVER going away, leaving it to criminal elements to flourish with is so insanely wrong, on multiple levels.
Absolutely this stuff is damaging to young brains, all the more reason to have open, sincere, honest conversations about controlling it(Not the childish sh*t I had to endure yesterday). Keeping it driven underground is NOT the way to protect our youth. There are already lots of things dangerous for kids that we have to deny them til certain ages, alcohol, driving, cigs to name just a few. It is our responsibility to publicly address these issues, not stick our heads in the sand. The clear fact remains, weed is basically harmless for adults, especially if vaped, not a proven killer and family destroyer like popular alcohol.
Anyways, for you and others with anecdotal stories of weed CAUSING mental disorders, there is no science I have ever found to back this up. Often, those suffering mental stress try to self-medicate with heavy weed use, that is quite common. But, it is a misguided attempt at a cure, not a cause. If your personal journey has actually uncovered any PROOF of a different connection, please pass it on to me.
Oh yeah, and where I do not challenge your assertion that activists are using medical marijuana as a door to full legalization, you are wrong, wrong, wrong about marijuana having no medicinal properties. You strike me as a thoughtful man, so please, please put some of that thought into properly informing yourself…

Anyways, thank you for demonstrating to some others here the proper way to engage someone you are disagreeing with.
“Wow … I focus on my work for a few hours…”
Since you have told us of the general area you live in, my first thought was that you were out shooing homeless people off your front lawn, LOL. Have a great Friday, Kenji.

“there is no science I have ever found to back this up”
so you’ll take the word of pm socks and tommy chong over the
stone-age shamans at the canadian medical association?
now, that’s commitment.

“Not the childish sh*t I had to endure yesterday”
it must be tough… being the only adult in the room,

Points of agreement with C.O. (I think?):
1. Dope is here to stay. Sadly, so too … Salvia, and a host of other “harmless” drugs. However, despite my (l)ibertarian leanings, I don’t believe that blanket drug legalization is smart public policy. For the simple reason that a drugged-up, society is a broken society. Think Opium War in China. Think the US temperance movement which was caused by a society overrun with DRUNK men shirking their manly responsibilities. No, it wasn’t “religion” that caused it. I am not certain that a society dominated by citizens who are … getting their smoke on … is a very functional society.
2. Kids need to be protected from drugs of all kinds.
3. Marijuana MAY have some limited medical applications … however, I would expect that the pertinent active compound could be extracted and administrated by some other means than via bong. Another personal anecdote: My only brother was an occasional dope smoker (and cigarette smoker), however, when he contracted a nasty cancer … marijuana did nothing for him. He tried both Marinal pills, and conventional smoking to help with chemo illness and neither helped. He quit both.
And IF legalization can eradicate the Mexican Drug cartels from my favorite “secret” remote canyon fishing streams in CA, then it would be worth it. It has gotten quite dangerous to go for a wilderness hike in CA. However, I am somewhat amused by the promised TAXATION of marijuana … which has been a PRIMARY argument for its legalization. Now … right on cue … all the pro-dope advocates are reversing their promise by saying high marijuana taxes create MORE criminal marijuana growing activities by making legal dope more expensive. It would be funny, if it weren’t so sad. Now the argument is … make dope cheap, plentiful, and available … or the illegal dope growers will proliferate. Not sure I choose EITHER of those options. Do I like spending vast public treasure on the WAR on drugs? Hell no! However … I say the same thing about the WAR on Terror. It’s simply sad that it is necessary.
Unlike Leftist ideologues… I can argue and disagree … and still maintain our friendship. Perhaps it’s a survival skill developed by living in the belly of the beast here in N.CA ?
Very well articulated, Kenji. What a breath of fresh air.
1. I followed you right up to your last sentence. In my experience, a successful person who enjoys weed is still a successful person and a lazy slob who enjoys weed is still a lazy slob. This is the real human condition.
2. Absolutely, and keeping it illegal does nothing to accomplish this, quite the opposite, IMO.
3. The part of the plant that they are using to treat these seizing children apparently contains none of the ‘high-inducing’ features of it. It is applied as an oil, I believe. As for other uses, helping with insomnia and pain relief are quite common claims, by seniors in particular. No doubt, the internet is probably packed with loads of totally BS claims, too. But, like damned near everything we ingest, who knows what great new revelations, positive or negative, we will face in the future(H/T to Kate’s Settled Science series). For now, the taboo surrounding this plant has stifled serious study of it, so we are technically decades behind where we should be. I would never, ever claim that marijuana was a magical cure for anything…. but these kids who were saved from suffering their deadly seizures might want to argue with me about that one.
The fact we are having this conversation in 2018 is proof enough that the ‘war on drugs’ has been an utterly dismal failure.
Are you seriously surprised that high-priced politicians can’t pull off what poor, illiterate street kids have managed for decades now? LOL! I submit that the vast majority of them couldn’t profitably manage a brothel at a military base.
Well, at least you’re not one of those … “marijuana will cure every ailment ever contracted by humankind” … kind of pot-advocate … Because that is the dominant pro-marijuana voices I hear. Which in turn makes me think they are on a constant high … and therefore experience all the “magic” properties of the DRUG while extolling its unlimited virtue.
By the way … I believe Neo is as articulate as you say I am. Even more so, as he provides hard evidence for what I simply opine about. I suspect that most all of the regulars here at SDA have far MORE in common than differences. Especially of character, morality, and integrity.. For that reason alone, we should all give each other a reasonable license to offer contrary opinions. Otherwise … we become that which we despise on the left.
Ha, either you did not read our series of posts before making that bizarre comment or you believe that ignoring points, deflecting points, refusing to engage on ANY real level and repeatedly childishly insulting someone is proper behavior. Holy sh*t, Kenji, just scroll up a couple posts to see exactly what level of ‘articulate discourse’ the troll was offering me, then tell me I am wrong. Seriously, please return and tell me I am wrong.
No, I have most definitely never interacted with the awesome individual that you just so enthusiastically described, not even f*cking close.
It was the can knob comment … wasn’t it. I have to admit laughing at that one … but probably because it wasn’t hurled at me. Must be a Canadian expression that I don’t know so well … I am something of a uniquely worded insult aficianado … ha!

“most definitely never interacted

you need to loosen up a little, brother…
you didn’t see me get all ‘jessica jones’
when oz referred to me as ‘penis breath.’
the first useful thing i ever taught 5 y/o
neophyte before i sent him off to school
was how how to roll with the punches.
you also offered me some ‘lawyerly advice’
but there’s no way you’re an officer of
the court if you can be so easily thrown
off your game.
free speech is just that and like voltaire,
i defend to the death, your right to

i do, however reserve the right to respond

Sorry C.O. … I LOL again … at the Puffy Pirate shirt comment. Even though I know you’re more of a dirty rock band T-shirt wearing kind of a guy.
Mon Ami … just teasing. At least I am not calling you an ignorant Luddite … like UnREAL calls me

kenji et al… see the latest chris rock comedy special, “tamborine” for
his take on bullies…
“We need bullies. Pressure makes diamonds. Not hugs. Hug a piece
of coal and see what you get. You get a dirty shirt.”
on suck@ss lying by teachers…
Noting that the kids were told, “You can be anything you want to be,”
he thought, “Why are you lying to these children? Maybe four of them
can be anything they want to be. But the other 2,000 better learn how
to weld.”
He imagines a more truth-based approach to pedagogy:
“You can be anything you’re good at, as long as they’re hiring. And even
then it helps to know somebody.”

Cool! I’ll check it out … your preview made me GUFFAW!! out loud. Now I have to explain to the wife why I’m laughing …
