The Sound Of Settled Science

Margaret Wente;

Last month, in an epic climbdown, the U.S. Dietary Guidelines Advice Committee, whose guidelines influence millions of people, finally dropped its recommendation to restrict cholesterol. “Cholesterol is not a nutrient of concern for overconsumption,” it said. So go ahead – eat all the eggs you want.
Just about everything we thought we knew about the evils of cholesterol and fats has turned out to be wrong. The doctors, the nutritionists, the dietitians, the heart societies, the experts at Health Canada, the food pyramid that hung on the wall in school – the entire health and medical establishment, in fact, have been perpetuating a big fat fraud.
It gets worse…

It’s not the first time I’ve posted on this. And it won’t be the last. (h/t Ottawa MJ)

  1. I always knew the so-called “experts” were wrong all along. But people are like sheep, they follow the herd and never think for themselves. They never evaluate all the information in front of them and then make intelligent decisions.
Been eating eggs, butter, meat, etc. for decades, and love every bite. Never followed the fad.

  2. I’ve been saying for years that high blood cholesterol was not because we eat meat, it’s because we’re made of meat.

  3. Sweet glad i never listen to that crap anyway. Tomorrow i think i will head out for a nice heart attack breakfast!!

  4. Around 40 years ago my brother-in-law decided to get into weightlifting/bodybuilding. I watched him swallow at least 6 raw eggs a day for quite a while. He still eats eggs.
He is nearing 67 years old and is still strong as a bull and built like a tank.
I too never jumped on the anti-egg, anti-meat foolishness. Rulers need to control, they don’t necessarily need to be right, all they want is the power and authority to tell you what you can and can’t do.

  5. Just in case though, follow those eggs, porkchops with red wine.
By the gallon. If you run short, substitute any other adult beverage, to avoid bordom…….

  6. When will they tear down that holy grail of BMI index hanging in doctor’s offices across the country?
Apparently at 6’0″ and 140 lbs I am obese. I am suppose to be 180-210.
I haven’t been that since high school.

  7. All this poppycock about eggs and colesterol just a lot of bull poo poo like they did with Oat Bran

  8. This was not the first time and it won’t be the last time that the “scientific consensus” is wrong. We need to resist the tyranny of the “experts.”

  9. The way all government departments are set up is you have to be in perpetual crisis and betterment research or you can’t empire build. Even worse is the departmental budget could be cut. No problems means no research money and every idiotic cause has its champions. That’s why taxes only go up and never down. That’s why you can’t buy real lawn darts or ride your bike without a helmet. That’s why even small health centers have a tobacco abatement officer (sign on the office door) and nutritionists that actually believe the bullshit they are peddling. Health Canada and the FDA will not make revisions to their preconceived notions until all else fails. They will demand more money for research on the new food guides and move in very small increments. That should take most of them into retirement. That’s how it works. After all, it’s only taxpayers money.

  10. And how many seniors’ lives were made miserable when they were forbidden the protein that was 1) affordable; 2) easily digestible; and 3) easily prepared? For years, seniors have eaten a lot of eggs, and this prohibition would have caused serious issues.

  11. Sorry but I do not believe in this cholesterol climb down either.
I have no trust in anything they say.

  12. It’s encouraging to see that the nutrition scientists have the courage to review/re-assess etc their data and come to new conclusions. As ‘real’ scientists are wont to do. Now if only their colleagues in the environmental realm could only be so brave.

  13. I’m with you, Iola. Consider the source, people. I wouldn’t trust the NYT as far as I could throw them.
Wouldn’t surprise me in the least if in this case, the experts were right after all, and the NYT is engaging in more propaganda with this teardown. I haven’t made the political connection yet for their motive, but I’ll always be skeptical simply because the article was published in the NYT.
The key is “moderation”. Enjoy all the foods you like, but try to have a healthy variety of fruits, vegetables, dairy, meats, and a little snack now and again wouldn’t be so bad either.

  14. I find the silence here about the best selling drug in the history of humanity a tad suspect. Now that the statins (ie Lipitor) are off patent the “news” breaks.

  15. well Iola the Granola, if you didn’t believe the Bullsh!t about cholesterol in the first place then it makes no difference. I, on the other hand have never seen anyone keel over eating and egg breakfast, and that includes myself, so I’ll go with “historical” evidence and file this under bull excrement just as I filed their previous findings:-)))
peterj, I think you pretty much nailed it, now they will need more money to do more research:-))

  16. uh-oh… G&M… Same diff. Could have sworn I’ve seen the same article posted at NYT, but I guess it was too early in the morning at the time.
Still don’t trust G&M either, and I’m hoping that doesn’t invalidate my advice on “moderation”.
Ok… now that I’ve taken the left foot out of my mouth, what’s for desert?

  17. Twice now I have tried to post some viable sources on this debate but the administrator keeps gobbling them up for review. Not sure why as I don’t see anything that would send up a red flag.

  18. Me too. Curiously in the 13 or so years I have been coming here and participating, this is the first time that has ever happened.

  19. Granola? Never touch the stuff. And yes, I never believed the nonsense about the cholesterol in the first place so why are you needlessly personally calling me names? Is it to somehow attract my attention in a warped and demented way? If you need a girlfriend/mistress you are going about it the wrong way.

  20. “Sorry but I do not believe in this cholesterol climb down either.
I have no trust in anything they say.”
Must be the way you worded it because it sounded like you disagreed with the new findings.

  21. Iola, Granola is like eating wood chips its blant, tastless and horrid as bad as Wheat Grooks like sawdust and Grapefuit which is absolutly putrid
