Why this blog?
Until this moment I have been forced to listen while media and politicians alike have told me "what Canadians think". In all that time they never once asked.
This is just the voice of an ordinary Canadian yelling back at the radio -
"You don't speak for me."

Well of course, it’s Heinz Guderian and Panzer Meyer!
I thought “Putler ist kaputt!”
Cheers
Hans Rupprecht Commander in Chief
1st Saint Nicolaas Army
Army Group “True North”
It’s just Dutch tanks spreading stool…
UTLOs, Unidentified Tank-Like Objects.
How is this possible? The leader of the free world is a Harvard educated genius.
Just ‘militants’ equipped with stuff they got at surplus stores.
Who knew you could get T-90s at surplus stores?
I do believe even the most modern tank is still susceptible to a petrol bomb, especially with no infantry support.
Hans;
If it was Heinz Guderian he would be in Kiev this morning!
My daughter-in-law’s family was one of those German families that emigrated to the Ukraine back in the 1890’s to farm. The Czar wanted Germans there to help
build stable growing communities and to invest in the country. Very primitive. They did not stay for WW I to role around. They heard things were better in Canada.
“Heinz Guderian and Panzer Meyer!
Very funny Hans. You forgot Manteufel.
Putin is playing this very cagey. One step at a time and he knows there is a useless POTUS who can or will do nothing.
My guess would be Iran. Cheers;
Time to retire that belief, grok.
Most tanks and infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs) of the 21st century have specially designed Nuclear, Biological and Chemical protective systems that make them internally air-tight and sealed; they are well protected from vapours, gases, and liquids.
Modern tanks possess very thick composite armour consisting of layers of steel, ceramics, plastics and Kevlar(Nomex), and these materials have melting points well above the burning temperature of gasoline, which makes the vehicles themselves invulnerable to petrol bombs.
Ukraine claims they’ve destroyed two of them so far:
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2657128/Ukraine-claims-destroyed-two-three-Russian-tanks-crossed-border-yesterday-inflicted-high-casualties-rebels-wave-bloody-battles.html
Yeah tanks without infantry screening are toast.
Actually modern tanks are very resistant to Molotov cocktails but the crews not so much….tankers are real paranoid of fire.
If the crew keeps it’s head and stays buttoned up, the damage will be limited to the paint…..now the reactive armour on that T90…I dunno…..
So is the it the Jihadists playing cover for Putin or the other way around? I wonder how much Obama’s mess is going to cost in lives and treasure?
Hmmm… a couple of thoughts from watching the video (1) the power pack on this single armoured vehicle isn’t sounding very healthy, an indicator perhaps that this vehicle does not belong to any Russian unit recently deployed on the border, (2) a single tank by itself does not match the Russian Army template for an advance. My guess is that it is one of several vehicles ‘liberated’ or acquired by the ethnic Russian insurgents from a Ukrainian armoury.
It’s a T90, Russia’s current 1st string starting lineup top-o-the-line main battle tank.
Algeria, Azerbaijan, India, Russia, Turkmenistan, and Uganda are the only operators and Ukraine doesn’t have any.
“a single tank by itself does not match the Russian Army template for an advance.”
Bullshit. The ‘current’ template is to sneak dribs and drabs of unmarked units into strategic positions and pretend that they aren’t even Russian Army.
Try not to fight today’s war with the last war’s tactics, mmmkay?
That’s always been the case. No one ever learns. This is an age of deceit. Our very languages stink from the taints of reworked language.
Why should war not follow the cultural script of evading reality?
Two more years of Obama & his Alinskyite babies.
The World made destitute for the ego of a sleeper agent.
Who know is the ally, of one of the most evil regimes on Earth.
I wonder who those guys could be?
Probably not Russian tanks as apparently Putin and all Russians, the virtue of not being American or Obama, are super Christian/conservative/not Obama but probably do have every right to roll into whatever country they like.
Yeah well…..whatever the current doctrine..
If that tank is the typical condition of the Russian Army and they are deployed singly with no infantry…..they do not represent much of a threat.
Bad doctrine for political reasons gets tanks burned….especially in urban areas……that’s a given, like marching on Moscow……
Who invades with one tank? You can’t ‘sneak’ a tank past the border as the fact we are talking about it attests. The Ukrainian military made further advances today btw.
Oh dear, not T90s; those are T64s. Plus a 152mm D-1.
Cheers
tank “deployed singly with no infantry”
Recon.
Um Oz, you really should know what you are talking about before offering goodies such as ‘recon’. If as you state it is conducting ‘recon’, then it most likely isn’t a tank from a Russian Army (see CRP, Vangard etc, etc) unit and more likely to be one being operated Russian ‘militia’s as I noted above. Mr Putin has invested considerable treasure in equipment and training (a step towards professionalising a portion of his army) his ground forces. Those arrayed along the border are not third tier, but rather his more capable forces. This means among other things that they operate cohesively and apply their doctrine and training. The balance of evidence in this video suggests that the operator is not from a regular russian army unit.
Also Oz – the tank in the video linked from the article is a T72 variant and not a T90.
A Ukrainian transport plane has been shot down and several dozen troops have been killed. It would appear that regime change in Ukraine is not going as smoothly as its US masterminds thought it would.
A tank hunter’s dream..armour unsupported by dismounted infantry.
Suspension/tracks is/are a standard identifying feature on Soviet/Russian tanks.
These critters have return rollers, with evenly spaced, smaller road wheels…T80 and later. Reactive armour is the other late model feature.
T62’s (a gap) and T72’s(evenly spaced) feature large wheel Christy suspension with no return rollers similar to that of the T34.
The smoke could be a poorly maintain smoke screen feature—Soviet doctrine: feeding fuel into the exhaust to create smoke to conceal numbers.
T90s are T72 variants. T-72Bs to be exact.
In fact T90s are T72Bs with ERA and a *modernized defence suite.
T80s are T64s with ERA and a *modernized defence suite.
*modernized defence suite = laser sight warning receivers, Nakidka camouflage and infrared ATGM jamming systems
Yeah, I know tanks and youse guys don’t.
Yeah the T80 is a developed T62/64….
Produced in the Ukraine….besides abandoning the Christy suspension the T80 featured a gas turbine engine(high fuel consumption)…..replaced by a big multifuel diesel in later variants such as the T80U….
The video clip’s sound track indicates a piston diesel not a turbine….
The (complex, high maintance) T80’s deployment was limited to elite (well trained) Soviet formations in eastern Europe and was not exported prior to the 1990 breakup.
The simpler, cheaper T72 was intended as the standard Soviet tank and widely exported….
Yes, as I said in the beginning, it’s a *T-90, …which happens to be a T-72 variant.
T-90 engine packs:
Model 84 V-84 12-cyl. diesel
V-92 12-cyl. diesel
V-96 12-cyl. diesel
840 hp (618 kW) for V-84 12-cyl. diesel engine
950 hp (736 kW) for V-92 12-cyl. diesel engine
1,250 hp (930 kW) for V-96 12-cyl. diesel engine
In case there is any question, the part where it says 12-cyl. indicates that ALL the T-90 engine packs USE PISTON ENGINES.
Look it up if you have internet access.
According to the commentary at this link (http://www.moonofalabama.org/2014/06/ukraine-these-tanks-and-the-state-department-lies-again-.html) – not Russian, and not T90 (or T72 for that matter) but rather T64B or T64BV.
Settled for identification purposes?
Not at all, settled. The articles source, the NYTimes is unreliable.
The assertion that “Russia once had some 4,000 T-64s. It did not upgrade them but scrapped those it had.” is ridiculous on the face of it.
Russia does not scrap it’s tanks.
It is doctrine since WWII that Russia keeps all tanks and stores them for future use should their first line tanks be destroyed and the older tanks be needed. They learned this lesson at great cost in the Siege Of Leningrad. I’ve even seen a recent photo of a police unit in a Russian city using a Panzer VI captured from the Wehrmacht 70 years ago.
When the invasion of Afghanistan was going on in 2001 Russian gave the Northern Alliance forces 60 T-55s to use against the Taliban.
Oz – for identification purposes. t64B or t64bv? That is all. The tanks in both videos, the tanks in the link i provided do look to be T64B or BV. As to who was driving them…
