This is clear proof of the decline of America, whose greedy, immoral, effete, incompetent ruling class has blown any hope of solving its own self-created problems, mainly through cowardice, cover-your-ass policies, procrastination, refusal to face facts and sheer bloody incompetence. Chamberlain, man of Munich, had more guts than Obama or Romney together.
Exactly.
The “fun” is only beginning. First Crimea, then eastern Ukraine, Belarus and Kazakhstan.

Extremely sad to think that the USA could have a Mitt Romney as POTUS rather a ‘feel good’ choice of dubious intellect. I do not judge Obama on his actions over the Ukraine but on his entire time in Washington.
The USA has led the world for decades not just from an economic perspective but also by doing, in most cases, the right thing in world affairs.
Funny thing about Chamberlain….he readily stepped aside and was appointed, by Churchill to a responsible position in the coalition government….despite Churchill’s earlier remark:
“Mr. Chamberlain is a humble man…and he has much to be humble about.”
Chamberlain was signally responsible for the crash rearmament program which cranked out Hurricanes and Spitfires and trained large numbers of RAF personnel…..and constructed the “Chain Home” system….the world’s first integrated air defence system.
The problem with that, was that the Luftwaffe grew exponentially in the same period.
Putin-

You know romney was not that bad. I saw him tell a gay man to his face that he was against gay marrige, so when people call him a squish , i absolutley disagree i think when it was time to be tough romney would be there . but oh well.
Everyone always knew that Russia would do whatever was necessary to retain possession of its naval base in Sevastapol, especially since the majority of Crimeans are Russian and voted overwhelmingly to join Russia. The US would do exactly the same if Mexico took over San Diego.
sorry, above comment from Ken.
SDA moves fast..
I would have to agree with taking back Belarus, where many of my relatives live.
It’s being run by an old-style Soviet dictator who needs to be tossed out.
Much like Ukrainian politics needs to be fumigated from its long line of kleptocrats, including Yanukovich, who have saddled the population with a $14 billion debt.
To assure myself of inner peace, I refuse to fret about what may be.
As my mother used to say que sera sera.
I liked Rommey because he was highly competent and experienced. He also was independently wealthy, so did not have to beholden to “pay backs”. I also do not think he was a die-hard party person . . .which to some extent explains why it took him a long time to even get the support of the Republicans. (The other reason being the overall rift in the Republican Party.) I agree with you, that was an opportunity lost.
PMSH to the rescue:
Friday 21 March 2014
Press Release
Canadian Prime Minister announced to a large enthusiastic audience in Kiev during his Ukraine visit that, after consultation with other NATO members, that Ukraine, now that Crimea has been pried away, will be offered provisional NATO membership, pending approval for permanent status. Mr Harper stated, “if Russia and Mr Putin are contemplating further military action in eastern Ukraine or elsewhere, it would be deemed an attack on all NATO members and a military force would immediately be dispatched to Ukraine to ensure her sovereignty and that properly conducted and observed elections would take place in May. Mr Harper warned any incursions into Ukraine by Russia would be met by swift and decisive action up to an including operations against the Sevastopol naval base.”
Mr Harper received a standing ovation from the Ukrainian parliament and the Nobel Committee is considering him for the Peace Prize.
That’s called deterrence. No it won’t happen, that would be “provocative,” apparently unlike the Russian invasion of Crimea and incursions into eastern Ukraine.
So then, would you be in favour of returning parts of Serbia that were given to Kosovo (as a reward to the American-created mujahadeen proxy warriors who fought Russia in Afghanistan) after NATO bombed Serbia?
The mujahadeen, just to jog your memory, morphed into al-Quaeda.
Napoleon invaded Russia with an army of 680,000 men in 1812.
Only 120,000 returned.
Russia lost more than 200,000 of its own defending from this invasion.
I’m glad my parents moved to Canada.
From the New Yorker:
WASHINGTON (The Borowitz Report)—In what was described as a major ramping up of sanctions, Secretary of State John Kerry announced on Tuesday that the United States had frozen Russian President Vladimir Putin’s Netflix account, effective immediately.
“Unless and until Mr. Putin calls off the annexation of Crimea, no more ‘House of Cards’ or ‘Orange Is the New Black’ for him,” Mr. Kerry said. “The United States will not stand by and reward the annexation of another sovereign nation with a policy of streaming as usual.”
While all of the sanctions Mr. Kerry announced on Tuesday were Netflix-related, he warned Mr. Putin that “nothing is off the table.”
“I’m sure I don’t need to remind the Russian President that ‘Game of Thrones’ is about to come back for another season,” he said. “As I have said, this thing could get very ugly, very fast.”
It’s rather odd that Canada of all countries, is doing the saber-rattling in Ukraine.
Canada, the country that lives in constant fear of being invaded by a pissed-up detachment of the Vermont Highway Patrol.
Canada, the country that took 6 months to mobilize 900 guys for Afghanistan, who then showed up in their arctic uniforms.
The gangs of Toronto can put 2,000 armed men on the streets in 7 minutes.
A country’s go to know its limitations.
PMSH should be recalled from this ill advised exercise in bravado ASAP. NATO? Really he is calling on NATO to lay the law down? Is this the same NATO that fell apart as they attacked Libya? Seriously, we are talking about the Euro juggernaut, NATO? Putin is laughing out loud now.
What is Harper’s end game? I have never considered him a foolish man I can only hope that he is getting some quid pro quo over Canadian issues. As a Canadian there is no compelling reason to bale out Euro interests once again.
Well Tovarisch…..the The Mujahadeen did not “morph(ed) into al-Quaeda.”
Al Qaeda originated in Saudi Arabia and they and the Taliban never set foot in Afghanistan until after the Soviets withdrew……
The CIA did foolishly supply Hektemeyer more than Massoud, but never Al Qaeda nor the Taliban.
Hektemayar allied with the Taliban, to fill the vacuum and attacked Massoud et al, who became the Northern Alliance(even prior to Soviet withdrawal).
Factions in all time periods/phases of Afghanistan politics are tribal oriented more than ideological…..although the boundaries seem to coincide.
Anything else is just Islamofascist/lefty propaganda/BS.
Defending from occupied but the Syberian horde Poland and Lithuania, with local population firmly on Napoleon’s side and suffering the bulk of the loses. Pity Napoleon failed.
Nonethless, NATO found a unique way to reward the mujahadeen, changing the map in the Balkans after a bombing campaign.
Now, they smugly tell others that to do so is against international law.
Seriously, why are you parrots continue with that tired line about naval bases. It has been refuted hundreds of times already. Russia’s bases where NEVER threatened. The new government did everything in its power to reassure the Putinista junta that they can keep their bases.
You forgot to mention Manifest Destiny and slave trade to complete the tired fallacious “you are no better therefore we are free to do whatever we want” argument.
Bah!. There is “sure”, and then there is “very, very, sure”. Control of the Bosphorus was a casus belli of WWI. The
Russians didn’t move so long as Ukraine was fairly stable; but when the Americans began to assist in its
destabilisation, the riposte was quick and clear.
Another point about the annexation of Crimea that David Goldman emphasizes is that Russia’s population is in
decline, although the rate of decrease is not nearly so bad as a few years ago, and millions of Russians in the
“near abroad” can’t be abandoned.
And, I might add, the stability of Turkey is probably also in Putin’s mind. So long as Turkey was essentially the
country which Ataturk founded, there were few grounds for concern. But its lurch toward fundamentalist Islam,
and its weird economics, may well have suggested that it was time to remind the Turks of what was what, and that
they had better mind their Ps and Qs.
Dystopian: If Mexico took over San Diego, Obama would apologize to them, and ask if they needed extra fueland ammo for their newly acquired navy.
Exactly right. Charlie Wilson’s War.
Shamrock, reference please.
Meanwhile, our champions, the leaders of the Free World, are doing what?
“NORRIDGEWOCK, Maine (AP) — Police armed with assault rifles descended on a Maine man’s home after members of a tree removal crew he’d told to clear off his property reported that he had a gun.
Turns out the “gun” the tree crew had seen on Michael Smith of Norridgewock was just a life-sized tattoo of a handgun on his stomach.”
“Bah!. There is “sure”, and then there is “very, very, sure”. Control of the Bosphorus was a casus belli of WWI. ”
Hate to break it to you and but Bosphorus has been under NATO control for decades.
“The Russians didn’t move so long as Ukraine was fairly stable; but when the Americans began to assist in its destabilisation, the riposte was quick and clear.”
Meanwhile, back in the real world: Russians did not move as long as Putin’s puppet wished to sell Ukraine to Putin. When Ukrainians overthrew the corrupt kleptocrat on Putin’s leash, Putin decided to punish them and carve the country up. During all that time, Western leaders did nothing meaningful and preferred to keep their heads in the sand. Only after Putin’s invasion some of them are showing weak signs of testicular fortitude.
“Another point about the annexation of Crimea that David Goldman emphasizes is that Russia’s population is in decline, although the rate of decrease is not nearly so bad as a few years ago,”
Largely thanks to the growth of Muslim population that will turn Russia into a powder keg in a decade or so.
“and millions of Russians in the “near abroad” can’t be abandoned.”
They are remnants of occupation and should be marched to the border unless they declare allegiance to the nations freed from Russian slavery. Of course any treasonous activity on their side cannot be tolerated.
“And, I might add, the stability of Turkey …”
If anything, the conquest of historically Tatar Crimea will only antagonize Turkey. The decades of Soviet genocide perpetrated against the Tatars are well known in Turkey. Unlike Europe, Turkey is very strong both militarily and economically. They also had decent relations with Russia recently. Well, if the sonofabitch wants another cold war he just opened a new front.
“Seriously, why are you parrots continue with that tired line about naval bases. It has been refuted hundreds of times already. Russia’s bases where NEVER threatened. The new government did everything in its power to reassure the Putinista junta that they can keep their bases.”
If you were confident of your geo-political opinions, you wouldn’t have to resort to childish name-calling.
It doesn’t matter what refutations have been made by Canadian or American armchair pundits, or what reassurances have been made by the Ukrainians. The only thing that counts is what the Russian strategists believe. They read Brzezinksi’s book. You should too.
“The only thing that counts is what the Russian strategists believe.”
And they knew without any doubt that none in Ukraine would be stupid enough to take Russian bases. Give it up already.
The first thing the US needs to do if it wants to have any international standing is to impeach the affirmative action brainless TOTUS who would have reached his level of incompetence as toilet attendant. Narcissist that he is, he’s made sure that all of his advisers are dumber than he is and perhaps we could trick Putin into firing just one teensy little nuke on the WH to increase the average IQ of the US administration by 1000%. Likely once Putin becomes aware of the magnitude of incompetence that currently exists in the WH, maintaining Obozo in power will likely become a greater priority for him than getting Yanukovych back in power in Kyiv.
The situation right now is one of two totalitarian regimes, one much more competently led, engaged in a public dick measuring contest (with one of the parties threatening to return after quick visit to plastic surgeon). What happened in Kyiv has Putin terrified. That was true peoples revolution which threw out oligarchs and plutocrats that had been plundering Ukraine. Similar situation exists in Russia and situation so bad there that all writers of soviet propaganda put in cold storage by last premier of USSR thawed out and given full control of Russia’s TV networks by Putin. Putin and his cronies know that they’re next if new Ukrainian people’s state succeeds. Shows great ignorance of Ukrainian mentality as Ukrainians very capable of dividing into 10 or more antagonistic blocks and fighting one another as one aspect of Ukrainian thinking is being 100% convinced that one is right (reason my father and I were never able to get anything done together). By having external enemy, this aspect of Ukrainian character temporarily shelved until Russian threat removed.
PMSH should act upon his promise to arm Ukraine and what Ukrainian military most needs now are portable ground launched anti-aircraft weapons. Ideally soviet designed weapons and likely there are ample stores of Khadaffi’s stash although unclear to what extent Afghanistan experience has resulted in addition of defenses against ground launched missiles to Russian helicopters. Also, AK47’s in very large numbers as well as anti-tank weapons. Should be able to get cheap Chicom 7.62×39 ammo readily although currently PMSH doesn’t allow importation into Canada for some bizarre reason. Probably able to get Chicom SKS’s very cheaply which is better than nothing, especially when one can use AK47 mags on them.
Demographics also huge factor here. Putin likely thinks Ukrainians are just Russians who have temporarily lost their way. With Ukraine letting him know they want no part of his grandiose dreams for world conquest, he’s going to try the soft touch first and, if that fails, invade. Right now muslim population of CIS doing their best to outbreed rabbits and generally succeeding. Russian population still trying to figure process out.
Kerry today suspended Putin’s Netflix account which demonstrates more than anything level of incompetence in US government. Time to start Maiden type camp in Washington and keep up protest until Obozo either hanging by neck from lamp post or has fled to protection of Moscow.
Very well said Loki.
Few minor points though:
Putin already fully realizes what a complete nincompoop the community-organizer-in-chief Hussein Reset al-Chicago is. And he is taking a full advantage of that.
“Russian population still trying to figure process out.”
After several generations have been conceived in the state of intoxication each successive generation has increasing problems with aiming. Seriously though, it is not just that they do not breed. It is that they are dying in en masse to diseases that long had been under control in the civilized world. The difference in life expectancy between Russian males and females is staggering. Alcoholism, AIDS, Tuberculosis, Hepatitis, STDs (Russians are true men and never wear rubbers) all take their tole. They even had a Cholera outbreak (how hard is it to teach Russians not to shit where they eat, seriously?). This is a country where one out of a hundred people dies due to accidental alcohol poisoning! Everyone in Russia seems to be doing their part on the march towards a national suicide. I set let them, but don’t let them drag others into their madness.
Colionolista, I thought that the self-destructiveness of Russian men had been curbed in Putin’s new Russia. Guess I was mistaken. Perhaps it’s just best specimens of Russian manhood that migrate as Russians I saw in Vancouver were all very physically fit, intelligent and successful. All seemed to have hot women as well but not so many kids as busy making money first.
Perhaps Lenin’s “new Soviet man” not best thing to have happened to Russia.
Oh and about that referendum, Crimeans were given two choices: 1: Join Russia now,
2: Join Russia later
They never were given an option to stay with Ukraine, no wonder the opposition boycotted it.

But hey, according to Kremlin’s parrots: you don’t vote you don’t count.
I haven’t seen any of the warmongers comfortably hiding behind their keyboards showing any willingness to get on a plane and go over there and lay their lives on the line for either side. Nothing but posing and political posturing, all bluff and bull$hit. Opinions are like asswholes, everyone’s got one, some just think theirs are better/bigger than someone elses. Deluded fools abound, and the intolerance of normally intelligent people is disappointing. Don’t bother with personal insults as in the end it cheapens your arguments, only makes you look foolish, and will be ignored. Have a nice day.
If I call someone out by name and call them a stupid asswhole – that’s an example of a personal insult. If on the other hand I describe a group of stupid asswholes, and someone responds by identifying themselves with that group by feeling insulted, then go right ahead and prove my point.
That’s it? You will not even recite today’s talking points from Kremlin? Going strait to “I don’t argue with chickenhawks/idiots” retort? Starting with your traditional last line of defence? What is the matter? Today’s issue of Pravda did not arrive yet?
Keep going north until you’re going south, change your moniker to something like severnaya ot shestdecet and be done with it. Dick.
Nof60, I’m sure there will be a fair number of younger Canadians heading over to Ukraine to fight if it comes to that. Lots went to Croatia during Croatian war for independence in 1990. My Ukrainian’s now too rusty to do that and I’m sure that, given Ukrainian propensity for always being 100% correct no matter what the situation, I’d be as likely to get into fights with nationalist side as Russian side.
What Putin has demonstrated is the disagreement between various world power groups who claim to be spokesmen for their “people”. These groups of oligarchs and plutocrats believe that they have the right to determine destiny of world. Corruption in this group as bad among US plutocrats as Russian and Chicom ones. All have a disdain for true democracy and believe that their little power games are all important.
Obozo should be as afraid of Kyiv protesters success as Putin since success of people power in Ukraine likely being viewed as blueprint for rebellion everywhere. Current western power resides in an unelected plutocracy. This is the same plutocracy that has attempted to create a world government through the fake religion of CAGW (and markedly enriched itself in the process) and now seeks to unseat the Russian plutocracy so as to grab Russian oil wealth given that wealth of western banksters based on a ponzi scheme about to unravel. Nothing like a good world war to get those idling factories running 24 hours/day and getting some real wealth into the hands of banksters.
Best plan is to simply refuse to go along with plutocracy. What has been singular about Ukrainian/Russian conflict so far is that there have been no dead among military personal who’ve been standing almost toe to toe for over a week. That shows intense control and may also be a factor of the soldiers thinking this isn’t worth dying over. Getting truth out about the degenerate world plutocratic class essential now and look for restrictions on internet in supposedly free countries soon.
“…Chamberlain, man of Munich, had more guts than Obama or Romney together…”
Well, Chamberlin had more guts than Obama has, that’s for certain. And you may be right about Romney, but at this point that’s just speculation.
The major difference between Chamberlin and ‘bama is that Chamberlin was a reflection of what his war-weary country desired: peace. ‘bama is more a reflection of what his average citizen is.

exactly !! good objective observations of the situation and a good example of the sort of constructive commentary others should strive for.
I’m 55, retired from the military 6 years ago after 23 years service. I am still on the Supplementry Ready Reserve list, and my background is Ukrainian. If the bullets start flying, I’ll demand to go back to active service – and can still give about 5 years. If the CF won’t take me back (fast enough), I’ll be on a plane to Warsaw and then over the border…I’m sure they could use an old Canadian Army Major.
Loki, that changed yesterday.

I could not find the Kyiv Post articles I saw yesterday. Paywall tonight.
We all know who the stupid asshole is! He is the poser, the
idiot, the dilettante who spends his entire time insulting
his intellectual superiors.
He reminds me of another idiot troll who went by the name Occam.
I challenged him on another site by pointing to the fact that
he could not even spell the name of William of Ockham. Dilettantes
and posers will never even understand the concept of Ockham’s
Razor.
Occam ran screaming from another Blog when I challenged him. No60,
you are about to suffer the same fate.
Does the idiot in question even understand the meaning of the
word Plutocracy? I think not!
Ken, I guess that’s what happens when I have one of my 24 hour sleep periods (has been rather busy lately). Thought I was on top of the news but I guess not. We’ll see if there’s any difficulties with Ukraine moving its military from Crimea in next few days. If this goes smoothly then it’s less likely for situation to blow up after this time; if not, then we’re likely looking at a war.
The best thing that NATO can do for Ukraine is to provide weapons and lots of ammo. For the sake of Ukraine, I hope they don’t try to fight in Eastern Ukraine as that would be a losing battle and there are lots of Russians there albeit many of them are not at all eager to be under Putin’s rule.
Geographically, best place for defense is Western Ukraine as this is almost 100% Ukrainian speaking and where Ukrainian nationalism is strongest. Unfortunately, partition of Ukraine would likely cede everything just east of Kyiv to Russia along with majority of heavy industry in Ukraine. Big problem is that natural gas lines to Europe go through Ukraine and it wouldn’t be surprising if Ukrainian partisans blow up any exposed infrastructure. This would hurt Russia, but also Europe and give more of an excuse for Russia to move West. Fortunately, we’re now coming into summer and that gives Europe 6 months or more to look for alternate sources of energy. Restarting all of Germany’s nuclear reactors would be a prudent first move.
It wouldn’t surprise me if there were fluent Ukrainian speaking Spetsnaz in large numbers in Western Ukraine already. Russian strategy has always relied heavily on infiltration first before the big military strike (one of their inheritances from the Mongols). Also, there are huge numbers of Russian sleeper agents in N. America and they are likely far more able to go about their business now than during height of cold war. By Russian standards, annexation of Crimea was one of their most peaceful operations as Hungary in 1956 was standard way in which Russians dealt with rebellion.
Ukrainian governments greatest problem will be to hold ultranationalists in check during this time. Doesn’t help when the minister in charge of “free speech” is seen beating up director of a news network for airing a video of Putin’s speech. While undoubtedly very emotionally satisfying for the individual involved, not a good longterm strategic move.
Not sure what PMSH was thinking when he promised NATO support. NATO, without the US, is militarily useless. David Hackworth wrote a scathing denunciation of the effect of NATO airstrikes in Kosovo where NATO destroyed hundreds of tank decoys costing far less to make than a single air dropped munition. Also, Clinton’s flouting of international law in Kosovo will come back to haunt the US as it justifies Putin’s actions. The Croatian half of me is in favor of any operation that kills Serbs, but moslems are a common enemy of Croatians and Serbs and Croatian and Serb forces would temporarily forget their disagreements when it came to battling moslem forces in Bosnia. The disagreements between Croatian’s and Serbs go back to the 11th century but the unified hatred of both for moslems is much more recent stemming from the relatively recent invasion of the Balkans by the Ottoman empire.
The best thing for Canada to do would be to provide free airfare for Ukrainian volunteers to Poland as well as large quantities of Russian made anti-aircraft missiles (Stingers would be better but too obvious), Russian made anti-tank missiles and AK47’s with Chicom ammo. Hopefully this won’t be necessary, but it would be nice to have such measures in place before a shooting war starts.
As far as the cyberwar, Ukraine is one of countries noted for its hacking capabilities and much of malware seen today as well as botnets are creations of Ukrainian hackers. Hopefully these hackers are patriotic enough to support Ukrainian government and counter Russian hackers (also quite a capable group). Finally, China is likely to play a role in this as Chicom aircraft carrier is actually Ukrainian built and now China is sending jet engines to Ukraine for servicing. US is exceedingly vulnerable now and any potential war needs to be planned under assumption that US is either unavailable due to most incompetent leadership in its history or that Russian sleeper agents will cause infrastructure havoc on orders from Moscow.
“Also, there are huge numbers of Russian sleeper agents in N. America and they are likely far more able to go about their business now than during height of cold war.”
Some of them seem to show up here. 😉
Almost bloodless, and with overwhelming support. Gosh, that’s not the way the US invades countries. The Russians obviously know something the US doesn’t even have a clue about. It’s worth it just to see Mr Zero played like the fool he is.
Loki a couple of points.
Putin will not be satisfied with Crimea. He will demand a corridor. Currently Crimea is landlocked by Ukraine and Putin will carve out a slice in the east. I don’t see a way for Ukraine to stop that either. Remember what happened in Georgia, he pushed much further than Abkhazia and Ossetia (to which he had no claims either but that is separate matter).
As for a peaceful evacuation of Ukrainian forces the Putinista Junta are already taken their first hostage – the commander of Ukrainian navy. Then there is a question of Ukrainian military assets including their naval vessels. I have no doubt that the thug from Kremlin will take the opportunity to humiliate Ukrainians further. The current government in Kiev is taking every conceivable step to avoid the confrontation. And thankfully they at least plan to bring back all members of Ukrainian armed forces and their families. However, given the track record, I don’t doubt that Putin will arrange for accidents and manufacture an excuse to push further. How far? It is difficult to predict.
Finally, it is difficult to expect that the humiliated Ukrainians and Tatars will not snap at one point. Things are getting increasingly desperate for them and they probably are beginning to realize that they have little to lose in the long run. That is unless one believes that Ukrainians or Tatars will be able to go about their daily lives without constant subjugation from the state as well as their russian neighbours. We already know that Tatars who have been quiet and who have a history of genocide inflicted on them by russians comparable in proportion to what russians did to Ukrainians have been demonstrating in Crimea. We know that Putin’s thugs have already killed one of them. Few more events like this, then Putin will manufacture a terrorist attack, few pogroms will follow and he will have an excuse to grab a corridor in order to, but of course, protect russian lives.
So now we have arrests of Ukrainian soldiers by Putin’s goons:
http://bearingarms.com/why-are-russian-soldiers-in-crimea-armed-with-american-rifles/ and the goons carry western weapons chambered for NATO ammo. So much for peaceful evacuation.
One corridor coming right up. Either that or Putin plans to reopen Katyn again.
“Some of them seem to show up here.”
No, here are only amateur fellators fascinated with “Putin’s manliness”.
That conveniently ignores that it’s a whole lot easier and cheaper to build the bridge link to Russia planned at Kerch, instead of an unnecessary ‘corridor’ through Ukraine. Maps are useful tools.
This article explains why Russia will be quite satisfied with Crimea.
