  17. Mike Allen, an Alberta backbench MLA recently got arrested in a prostitution sting while in St. Paul, Minnesota. I think it’s wonderful that odd looking old guys can get laid, even if it costs them a buck. Wild Rose leader Danielle Smith seemed to think that Allen needed a morality lecture. In my personal life, women who seam normal and reasonably smart, often go for/ stay with complete jerks/violent a**holes, so yes there is definitely a problem with women and enabling A-holes. Even Lindal in her post thinks wiener is being unfairly targeted, what part of stupid does she NOT get.   36. John Lewis, you’re probably right that the media coverup at the time and the lack of an internet had a lot to do with JFK getting away with it. That being said, there is a world of difference between a politician having an extramarital fling (not to condone such activities) and a politician using the internet to expose one’s, erm, privates, with a creepy grin, to women he’d never met.
    LindaL’s suggestion (7:49 pm) that a public figure’s sex life should be his/her own private business is actually a reasonable one up to a point, in the sense that it’s nobody’s business if a politician asks his wife to, I don’t know, dress up like a rabbit in the privacy of their own bedroom. Weiner’s behaviour, though, is in a completely different category: he’s a compulsive exhibitionist who not only “put it out there” – virtually every internet-connected man, woman, and child in the developed world can see “it” if they want to — but clearly did so for the thrill of it (“Carlos Danger”), so he has no reasonable expectation of privacy. “Privacy” and “public exhibitionism” are oxymorons.
    Linda (if you’re still reading this thread) I have a question for you: Would you — honestly now — vote for a *woman* who had been compulsively tweeting photos of her hoo-hah to strange men (i.e. men she’d never met) and then, after she had been caught and forced to resign from her previous post as a consequence, continued to do so for several years, including while running for office, or would you believe that her lack of judgement – never mind her proclivity itself – rendered her unfit for public office?

  37. EBD — I continue to contend that Weiner is being pilloried because we don’t like that particular type of sexual behaviour, but I see it as no more harmful than a lot of other stuff. Quite frankly, I think Jack Layton going to his massage parlor is equally offensive. As a married person I would have more trouble with my husband having an affair than with him posting pictures of his privates anonymously. Now Weiner has been found out, but the original intent, surely, was to do this anonymously. Also — when you don’t see the face, those private parts look a lot alike — and to some extent lose the personal aspect.
    Regarding your question re a woman — hard to say. It is harder for me to imagine a woman politician actually doing this. I can imagine a woman doing it, but not a political type — who tend to be more along the lines of the Madeline Albright or Golda Meir variety. I am genuinely not that offended by Weiner’s antics. Someone suggested sexting is a step up from looking at dirty Playboy pictures — and I agree. It is a kind of interactive porn in my view — a bit creepy, but relatively innocuous. What if he were caught going to a nudist colony? Is that just as bad?
    I am very much offended by the double standard going on here, and the way in which “group think” has been manipulated by someone in order to ruin Weiner’s campaign. He left himself vulnerable, of course, but public scorning is the wrong way to punish him. I also suspect he really did try to avoid doing this for a time. People with addictions often try and try again — so his saying he gave it up . . . and then being caught “sinning” again . . . may simply reflect common human vulnerability.

    As for Weiner, his behaviour isn’t harmful only in the highly limited sense that it involves consensual behaviour himself and other adults. His behaviour does harms his wife, though, and his family members (parents, aunts, uncles, siblings) and it will almost certainly harm his son Jordan (he’s only a year-and-a-half old right now) and cause him great embarrassment and relentless harassment in years to come.
    Even if we were to push all that completely aside, and deem it a private matter between those people, we’re left with the issue of a public official’s psychologically deep-seated lack of judgement. Yes, his “sexting” was, as you note, intendedly private, but in fact it – obviously – wasn’t. For a a former congressman who is now running for the position of mayor of NYC to use Twitter to compulsively tweet photos of his junk to women he’s never met demonstrates either complete stupidity, inappropriate risk-taking behaviour, or almost uncontrollable impulsivity, none of which are appropriate attributes for someone running for a position of public trust that carries a great deal of responsibility.
    Character, good judgement, and reliability do matter, whether you’re a teacher, a lifeguard, or the Mayor of NYC.

    No, and in fact it would be kinda the opposite, in that pne of the longstanding, clearly-stated goals/ideals of naturism is to separate nakedness from prurience. As a rule they strongly proscribe open sexual behaviour, leering, etc., and consider these things inappropriate and creepy in the same way that clothed people do – perhaps even moreso. If Anthony Weiner showed up at a nudist colony and exhibited himself in the same way, with the same creepy, leering grin, he’d be frog-marched out of the area.

EBD — All of the points you mention re Weiner’s behaviour apply equally (in my view) to adultery (inappropriate risk taking, stupidity, impassivity), and people are hurt — especially wife and kids. I think kids would be even more damaged by adultery if it results in a divorce, whereas, very few people would be able to pick Weiner out in a line-up of similar pictures. From everything I have read, people are attacking Weiner because they are put off by his particular brand of sexual behaviour. That’s a double standard. You could be waiting quite a long time if you are looking for character, good judgement and reliability in the US politics.

    That’s obviously true, Linda. Nobody likes that, not even the people who do it. I’ll raise you one and say that the actions of his fellow Dem ratbag Elliot Spitzer are worse on pretty much every level.
    But Wiener’s actions are far -stupider-, and his brand of behavior reveals a level of mental malfunction that reasonable people won’t put up with in an elected official. Its in that “I know it when I see it” place where most people draw the line.
    Personally I see what he’s admitted to already, and think about the warehouse full of skeletons little Anthony still has hidden away. Imagine how easy it would be to blackmail this doofus.
