The tariffs that Trump announced in July and then implemented last night had no economic rationale. They were obviously meant as negotiating leverage.
Now that negotiations have failed, that leaves the newest tariffs with no purpose whatsoever. Carney’s threatened retaliation on September 9 leaves the door open for a simple deal; Trump withdraws the August 23rd tariffs, Carney doesn’t retaliate. A one-minute telephone call would suffice.
I look forward to Canada chasing its US customers away. Economics don’t lie, and they don’t pretend. Start charging punishing retaliatory tariffs … and we will find new suppliers … permanently. It’s what consumers and their suppliers do. But your international banking genius PM already knows that.
And many of those new suppliers will be US suppliers.

Are you aware that Canadian retaliatory tariffs are taxes on US goods sold to Canadians, and not Canadian goods sold to the US? In short, the suppliers would be American. You seem confused on that point.
But at least you seem to be coming around to the idea that tariffs punish the country imposing them, as well as the country that’s exporting.
Trump’s new Tariffs amount to about 3 weeks of trade. This is a tap on the shoulder, not a punch to the gut. I’m not convinced either Trump or Carney expected the deal to fail. There is something we are not being told, and I’m hoping it will come out in the next few days.

The already weak economy is going to tank, and Carney and his paid-and-bought-for media will continue to attack Trump, blaming the coming recession on him.
