American author Claire Berlinski is tweeting like mad these days about everything going on in Turkey. Like this. Fascinating to follow her Twitter feed.

An independently wealthy piper can call his own tune. If you need someone else to pay you, you play what they pay for. If those theatres think they need government funding they should understand that the government doesn’t need them and realise that sucking up may be part of the deal.
Who or what is a Claire B? Especially one who lies right of the bat on twitfeed? I could have sworn she said she would not be back. And she’s in a muzzie country. What did she expect?

Did I miss that part?
The idea that artists have to (or at least should) produce the kind of art their sponsors demand has merit. American conservatives are especially sensitive to this when “artists” receiving grants produce crap like the Piss Christ. The case in Turkey is different from ours, however.
Turkey, since the fall of the Ottoman Empire, has been a secular country, and the government itself has enforced this secularism. That really is the only way a country with a Muslim majority can remain secular: the government has to control Islam. Many, many Turks favor this purposeful secularism, even to the extent of approving military intervention when necessary.
The old Turkish government would have supported artistic freedom mainly because artists would tend to be secular. The new Turkish government wants to shut down anything that inhibits the domination of Islam and devout Muslims. Secularists are on their way out in Turkey if they no longer have government support. Even though secularists are in the majority, the violent and intimidating tactics of unrestricted Muslim groups, headed by Erdogan, will win out.
Most news reports about the riots in Turkey fail to explain the courage it takes to publicly
demonstrate in that country. The fear many of these folks have regarding the authorities is
both warranted and scary. When Turkish citizens hit the streets it has far more meaning than
any north American demonstration. Three cheers for these courageous people.
