What gets me in all this is the total reversal of priorities.
The military, securing the borders, the justice system, maintaining the currency – all these are what we expect a government to do on the collective behalf, and they are considered discretionary (ie expendable).
While the welfare state items, in which no government has any business being involved in the first place, are considered to be mandatory.

Let me expand on your statement “You can fly an airplane inverted for a long time.” Only military aircraft and aerobatic aircraft that are designed to do so can be flown upside down. A normal aircraft has the fuel pickups at the bottom of the tank, so the fuel system will be sucking air soon after the plane is rolled onto its back. When that happens the engine quits, airspeed decays and the airplane stalls and enters a spin. There are two possibilities, if the airplane has insufficient altitude it will crash into the ground before the pilot can recover from the stall, if the altitude is sufficient a skilled pilot can wait until flying speed has been regained and then pull the nose up, and then try to restart the engine.
Given that the pilot is Obama and the Copilot is Bernanke
(whose latest column states “California….not only voted for much-needed tax increases,”) I would guess that it doesn’t matter how much altitude the plane has, it is going to impact the ground while still in a spin.
