  4. The ban’s still on, it’s just been pushed to January 1st, 2015.
    Okay, it’s not a ban, but you won’t be able to buy them in Canada. Which just means border trips for lightbulbs. We can pay them in Kinder Surprise eggs.

  6. Now if they can force the incandescent light bulb manufactures to make a bulb that will last more than 2 months.
    I can stop buying those Dairy Ice Cone Creme shaped, mercury filled,
    3 seconds to come on before you trip,
    3 year guaranteed,
    only last about a year,
    but costs ten times as much/white/environmental wacko bulbs.

  9. As I understand it the Canadian ban was suspended almost immediately after the CPC won its majority in June. And that legislation to repeal will be forthcoming. We lead the world in the return to sanity.

  13. I had already switched over to heavy duty rough service bulbs to bypass the ban.
    Try cooking a 40 W CFL twisty bulb in an industrial oven at 300 degrees Celsius idiot liberals…………..

  14. Our society is founded on freedom of choice. If you don’t like CFLs then don’t buy them. Same goes for PV solar, or wind turbines. Nobody is forcing you, so back off with the fascist attempts to control choices made by others.

  15. I’m wondering if other people have noticed a marked decrease in the lifespan of incandescent bulbs over the last 1-2 years? I’ve gotten to the stage where I write the date I change the bulb in felt pen on the bulb and find that often the ridiculously low lifespan of 1200 hours is not being met. I suspect this is as a result of having incandescent bulbs manufactured outside of the US. What appears to be better are 100/150 W bulbs that look like an incandescent but are actually a halogen and the 100 W bulb only dissipates 72 W and can thus be put in a 75 W rated socket. They seem to last quite a bit longer than the chicom incandescents but still haven’t figured out if the extra cost is worth it.
    Every politician who voted in favor of the incandescent light bulb ban should be forced to spend a winter in Inuvik in a wood stove heated shack with only CFL’s for light. My shop has tube fluorescent bulbs as the main source of light and I’ve had to add an incandescent fixture so that I can see to get the wood stove lit when the temperature is -10 C or lower. Haven’t tried taking a propane torch to a fluorescent bulb yet to try to get it to come on when it’s really cold but that would have been the only method of providing light had the moonbat incandescent ban actually come into effect.
    There’s no such thing as “waste heat” during a Canadian winter. Why is it that moonbats are involved in making decisions that don’t affect them as they never go out in the cold or drive when it’s -40 C outside? Just imagine a Volt at night during an Albertan winter blizzard with CFL headlights and the driver having a choice between freezing to death while stopped using the battery to heat the vehicle, or freezing to death while driving with no heat assuming the unlighted Volt wasn’t run over by a semi first.

    I use a mix of incandescent bulbs controlled by dimmers, halogen bulbs, and 30 year old European CFLs that are still going strong. Each has it’s place and I choose which type is appropriate for the application.
    Chinese goods are mostly crap, one does not get what they pay for. The cheap price is false economy. I avoid junk Chinese products whenever possible.

    North 60 I have to say that dimmers will dent your power bill, but they help heat your house, so as I’m listening to my BC carbon taxed gas furnace drain my wallet I think I lost the point and would rather type my resume’ to a energy company in Sask.

  19. For the record, halogen bulbs are incandescent bulbs. They use a tungsten filament in a partially-evacuated globe, just like your garden-variety incandescents. Difference is, the conventional bulbs have a large globe of thin glass, with a small amount of argon within it. Argon, an inert gas, helps prevent tungsten atoms from sublimating off the filament and coating the inside surface of the globe. If you look at very old vacuum tubes, which do indeed have a vacuum within them, you can often see a silvery inner coating of metal formed in that way, and indeed on some old lamp bulbs, too. The tiny ones used in car instrument clusters are very prone to this darkening. Eventually, enough metal sublimates off the filament that it burns through, and the bulb is toast. Argon retards that process in conventional bulbs, but only to a point.
    Halogen bulbs, on the other hand, use a relatively small globe made of thick fused quartz, and the atmosphere inside the bulb contains a halogen, commonly iodine. In fact, when lamps of this nature first appeared in the marketplace, as automotive headlamp bulbs, they were marketed as “quartz-iodide” headlamps. In lamps of this construction, the tungsten that sublimates off the filament reacts with the iodine gas in the bulb, forming an iodide salt, and when the lamp is shut down, that iodide salt recrystallizes metallic tungsten back onto the filament, restoring (most of) the tungsten that was lost. This regeneration allows the halogen bulbs to be run at a much higher temperature, increasing both light output and efficiency, and yielding a whiter light. The thick quartz globe can handle the heat, which common glass cannot.
    Nowadays, it’s commonplace to put halogen bulbs inside larger glass globes, so that the unit can directly replace a conventional incandescent of the same form factor.
    By the way, if you have the occasion to replace a halogen sealed beam headlamp on your vehicle, you can actually see the results of this recrystallization of the tungsten filament. You can peer into the lens, and see a magnified image of the filament reflected in the silvered surface of the reflector. A nice sharp image, in fact. In a new lamp, the tungsten wire of the filament is smooth and shiny. In the old one, the wire is coated densely with tiny sparkling crystals, like hoar frost on a tiny scale. Quite pretty, actually. And if you have a burned-out headlamp, you can nearly always see the break in the filament.

  27. I’m prepared to cut the politicians at least a little slack here. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s there were thousands of studies on energy efficiency. No one could read them all, but I at least scanned several dozen of them over the years. And EVERY single one of them assumed that all the heat from incandescents was waste. The problem with virtually all of these studies was that they almost always failed to take secondary effects into account.
    So, if the supposed experts are consistently misleading everyone on energy systems, why would the politicians fail to follow their advice? It should be noted that few of these studies were done by people who actually built or maintained HVAC systems.
    It’s easy to blame the politicians who enact this stuff, but there’s an enormous amount of very bad advice flooded their way by a host of lobbyists and special interest groups.
