Reader Tips

Via the British Film Institute, here’s a short 1931 silent film showing the workaday bustle at the Tower Bridge Road Market, in what is now the Borough of Southwark in the middle of Greater London.

  1. Got my new Shaw Direct receivers today and switched on Sun News for the first time a couple hours ago.
wow.. it’s extremely strange watching Canadian news without being spoon fed the same old politically correct Liberal pablum at every turn. Never thought such a thing would happen in my lifetime.

  2. Why is Bill betting on Canada when Liberal Count Ignatieff says the Dominion is going to Hades on a handcart?

  3. The comb-over candidate’s do-overs:
“TV star and developer Donald Trump tells his Tea Party followers the nation needs a President who is a ‘winner, not a loser’ – and he’s just the guy for the job. What he doesn’t talk about is a recurring pattern of Trump companies filing for bankruptcy to dodge creditors and distance him from business failure.
“When his Trump casinos filed for Chapter 11 in 2009, Trump claimed he had nothing to do with the gaming halls. Documents tell a different tale: then and now, he’s listed as an owner on the casino’s license.”
    […]
“In the last 20 years, Trump’s companies have sought protection from creditors to avoid financial collapse at least three times.”
In response to the NY Daily News article Trump stood in front of a mirror and pouted out his lips like the lead singer of a bad 80s hair band…

  4. Do the following (consecutive) statements from this article by The Star’s Tim Harper add up?
“The NDP….ran first or second in more than 100 ridings in 2008, and it may now be in a position to eat into enough Bloc support in Quebec and Liberal support in Ontario to allow the Harper Conservatives to pick up seats and ride to a majority.
“A strategic swing to the New Democrats will badly wound the Conservatives.”
    Huh?

  5. Ignatieff – ya but, ya see, I wanna be Canada’s PM now.
[In the new version there is no arrest by a young Serb in combat gear. No detention in a Serbian police station. No release ordered by a mysterious local warlord.]

Which Liberal(s) had the brain wave to anoint not elect Dion’s replacement? Were they afraid of ‘accidentally’ coming up with another dud?

  6. Yeah EBD, I think it does.
A vote, by party preference as indicated by current polls would be good for the Cons, leading to a possible majority.
But, strategic voting by Liberals in abandoning their party and switching their votes to the NDP could take away a number of seats from the tories where the margins are tighter.
But I think NDP strength is exaggerated right now, and strategic voting is more a concept than is actually carried out in practice.

This is a heads up moment.
The Union Crack Heads are on a road to the final abyss.. This will quickly escalate with them resorting to taking students hostage, and eventually killing them.

  8. Nineteen little known facts about the South Wests illegal immigrant problems. Some of the numbers are huge. As the article said the US has no problem securing the N/S Korea border and Mexico is more of a threat.

  9. ChrisinMB @ 10:23, ditto here. It was great, the little that actually had time to watch it.
I had some trouble setting it up, so phoned the Shaw tech people and they were great. It is working fine now.
The only problem is that the new DSR 605 has less clear picture than the old standard DSR 317. It did not matter which channel. Changes in the television’s picture setting did not help. This is weird as I thought the picture should be better.
    Anybody have any ideas?

  11. “man who lowers the death rate in bermondsey”
What does this mean, from the movie clip.

  12. Ken (Kulak) I upgraded from an ancient DSR411 to a HDDSR605 so obviously I had an improvement. Yeah, Shaw was very good with tech support and the upgrades. I imagine they had many such calls recently due to Sun News and knew the routine well.

  13. Did anyone else find it funny/ironic that the Liberal Party ran frequent campaign ads (i.e., several times an hour during Eastern prime time) on Sun during the first week of its existence? It took me until today to see one from the CPC.

Yeah — you’re not using an HD TV, and probably are using poor quality connections.
Otherwise, what you’re claiming? Pretty much an impossibility. If the signal’s there, it’s not a hardware issue.

  15. By the way, if Ekos is correct, Canadians are going to wake up with one sore backdoor on May 3rd. Can you say PM Jack Layton?

  16. Yeah, the Ekos poll was a bit of a digestion disturber. Here’s hoping that they’re very wrong.

  17. In spite of the fact that by 1931 motion pictures were not in any measure cutting-edge technology, I always marvel at old footage such as this. This clip is the first I’ve seen of London pre-war. Thank you for this.

  18. NDP MP Pat Martin forced to apologize for verbal attack; woman questioned if he lived in riding
” I asked him about the issue of not returning calls, not only I but three others had the same question. I also asked Mr. Martin who he was representing. Mr. Martin stated that he has a house on Canora, but does spend time in Vancouver where he owns property that is rented out. (Yet, in the Winnipeg Sun dated April 24th, in a quote to Tom Brodbeck, Mr. Martin stated that he just went through a divorce and his wife received the property on Salt Spring Island.) ”
    What happened next stunned Calder.
“As I sat down, Mr. Martin said to me, “how many restraining orders do you have against you?”.

  19. I believe – but am not certain – the “man who lowers the death rate in bermondsey” comment refers to the density of the crowd surrounding him, tieing that in with Bermondsey being an area half mile east of Southwark Street Market, and the belief at that time that population death rates in various neighborhoods differed widely due to varied densities of their populations.
Btw, today’s Southwark Street Market has moved two blocks north and is now called Borough Market. It is a delight.

    “Ignatieff ‘s petro-populism”
“Once a man who preferred the intellectual high road, Michael Ignatieff now is plumbing that lowest common denominator of water-cooler populism: high gas prices. Could this really be the thinker who once parsed the fine points of global citizenship and human rights on the pages of The New York Times Magazine?
At a rally on Tuesday in the Toronto suburb of Scarborough, Mr. Ignatieff pledged to place MP Dan McTeague -a man already wellknown as a noisy demagogue -in charge of monitoring pump prices nationwide, should the Liberals win the May 2 election. For a thinking voter, it’s as good a reason as any not to vote for the Liberals.
Mr. McTeague has made a career of bashing oil companies over gasoline prices while never quite managing to find any proof of collusion or gouging, two of his favourite accusations. The Pickering-Scarborough East MP has shown that there is less competition in most Canadian markets than in comparable American ones -so in most large Canadian cities one oil company tends to dominate above the others -but he has never demonstrated that this arrangement leads to higher consumer prices at the pump.
It’s easy enough to understand how some Canadians accept the populist complaints pushed by Mr. McTeague.”

  22. The Ekkos poll? Please.
They have the CPC 6 to 7 points lower than everyone else, the Dippers 3 to 4 points higher, but the LPC right there with everyone elses numbers.
Ezra was having fun last night on twitter calling out the owner of Ekkos and his attempts at scaring the LPC base into voting with totally unrealistic 100 seat NDP numbers.

  23. For all SDA folks on the Eastlink Halifax grid, the infamous SunNews is on the cable at 610 in HD. After watching it I was kind of disappointed as I didn’t see any short skirts and hotties catering to the lower base of society as the MSM had reported.
What I saw was a new news channel, a bit wobbly at times, doing a decent job of presenting a “Fox style” operation, as in “fair and balanced.” Given the fact that several personalities are from radio or print, they aren’t doing too bad. Getting used to looking at the camera and acquiring an on-air wardrobe will take time as will the looking comfortable in front of the cameras. Look to see improvements as time progresses.

  24. Pretty much my impression as well Texas-Canuck.
Remember, Sun News TV’s entire budget of $20 million/year is likely a lot less than the CBC spends on the supper time local news here in Halifax.
Oh, they put all the hotties on during daytime programing when us working stiffs are working. This would explain why so many on the left seem to have been able to make an opinion on the dress of the ladies.
And I never thought I would be saying this, but props to Olivia Chow. She and Jack were amoung the first guests on The Roundtable. When she heard about the misogynist ramblings of the likes of Rick Mercer and Jonathan Kay she immediately took her jacket off for the taping of their piece, baring arms along with the rest of the gals on Sun that day.

  25. From John Hinderaker at Power Line:
    “Obama Blows Off Easter
“Liberals often express dismay over the fact that a significant minority of Americans believe that President Obama is a Muslim–or tell pollsters they do, anyway. . . .
“I don’t think Obama is a Muslim, but I can understand why many Americans are uncertain about his core beliefs. This year, Obama let Easter pass without issuing any sort of proclamation. That can hardly have been an oversight, as he devoted considerable attention to the annual White House Easter Egg Roll, a purely secular event.
“. . . On the contrary, he has made a point of issuing Presidential proclamations on the occasion of every significant Muslim holiday–Ramadan, Eid-ul-Fitr, Hajj, and Eid-ul-Adha. Here is what he had to say about Ramadan last August:
“ ‘On behalf of the American people, Michelle and I want to extend our best wishes to Muslims in America and around the world. Ramadan Kareem. . . . [followed by two, long paragraphs]
“ ‘I look forward to hosting an Iftar dinner celebrating Ramadan here at the White House later this week, and wish you a blessed month.
“ ‘May God’s peace be upon you.’
“What did he say about Easter, the most important event in the Christian calendar? Nothing. Is it any surprise that some Americans perceive Obama as more enthusiastic about Islam than about his own self-professed faith? . . .”

  27. A person living down my street has put up NDP campaign sigh… for Jack Layton, who is not a candidate.
Just thought I’d mention ’cause it’s funny, not because it’s a violation of election sign rules.

  28. Because the Liberals NEVER played ethnic politics…
    ————————-
But Tariq Amin-Khan, an associate professor of politics at Ryerson University in Toronto, said that the Conservative strategy of targeting voters based on race or ethnic origin could backfire.
“This targeting of the ethnic vote has really angered quite a few people within the broader South Asian community who see themselves as people who are just being exploited to gain votes,” he said.

  29. Aaron – I’m just back from visiting the grandkids over Easter in Peterborough, ON (a riding currently held by Conservatives) and I noticed a number of lawns had signs for the local NDP candidate as well as a second one with Jack Layton’s name – thought it odd – is it also illegal??

So did Judy Srgo,to the tune of about $80,000. Unfortunately, that honest mistake got very little coverage also, about as much as Pablo’s drunk driving charges.
