Have you ever wondered what would happen if gay bars looked like cigarette packages?
(But I repeat myself.)

About the time I quit watching Canadian TV I was watching the local news. On the screen I watched dear Barb, in front of a gym full of kids, dramatically yank the wig off of her head thus showing once and for all how bad was the use of tobacco. Powerful presentation until in the next segment I witnessed dear Barb outside the school door sucking on a cigarette so as to get as much tobacco smoke as she could into her cancer ridden lungs.
Wise words:
“If your kid is an alcoholic, junkie, promiscuous, gang-bangin’ f*ckup… it isn’t because the government let them down… it’s because you failed as a parent.”
This is why my wife and I don’t do day care and won’t do play school and will strive to correct all the bullshit they teach my daughters in school once they get there.
Your kids are your responsibility. The state shouldn’t raise your kids.
On a side note, I was a young smoker when the visual warnings came out, we collected them. When the price doubled, we kept smoking. Nothing the gu’ment did got me to quit. It was my decision to be less stupid.
I remember going past Princess Margaret hospital in T.O and watching people in hospital gowns hanging off I.V. polls (in the middle of winter..!) to get their nic fit under control.
Powerful stuff addictions…and these people were dying of cancer..in a cancer hospital!
Unfortunately, we are stupid as a people and need constant reminders of what these products can do to us.
As a long-time smoker, I can say with some authority that these images are going to do nothing to curb smoking.
A total waste of taxpayers’ money.
I’ve promised myself that if I ever get cancer, I get to start smoking again.
(So come on tumors!)
I always wanted to be that guy in the PSA who still smoked — by sticking the cigarette in the trache hole in his neck. I would love to mess with people by doing that!
Kathy you should get a glass eye to go with it.
In related news, Ontario hospitals have decided they need to ban smoking from the entire hospital property. This means no more having a gasper under the awning outside the front door, you have to leave the property completely.
With the inevitable (and known) result that we will all soon be seeing sick busted people in wheelchairs, with IV bottles and Borg implants hanging off, sitting outside on the sidewalk, in the rain, or snow, or sleet, or -10F freezing frickin’ cold, in their hospital gowns, smoking.
Maybe it won’t be so bad, the nurses will be out there smoking right beside them. In the rain.
Have you ever wondered what would happen if gay bars looked like cigarette packages?
Or abortion mills, for that matter? ….
What an rotten thing to say, but hey… why should we be shocked that a person as hateful as yourself could turn an attempt to inform people as to the dangers of smoking into an opportunity to bash Gay as spreaders of disease?
Funny how much you have in common with the Nazis. http://www.ushmm.org/wlc/en/article.php?ModuleId=10007822
John- just go away, your beagle needs some luvin’
settle down john…settle down..
now stop a moment and just think it through…
btw you’re the first Godwin’s law winner on this thread!…congrats!…keep up the good work of gassing and incinerating debate!…you’re an inspiration to all of us who type with jackboots on their mitts!
Totaly right on the mark Doug how far would a organisation called Mothers against abortion get? who kills more? tobacco wich pays more than its share of taxs or abortion wich is funded by those dollars think about that John
Thr truth sure hurts.
Gays ARE spreaders of nasty diseases including an incurable fatal disease.
The stats are bad enough to indicate they infect others knowingly.
Gay bars are death traps. http://www.actoronto.org/home.nsf/pages/hivaidsstatsto
The truth falls victim once more to state indoctrination resulting from a special interest group lobby: the anti-smoking one in this case. The Nazis would be proud of them, for they have succeeded in dehumanising and even demonising smokers (unless it is pot) just as the Nazis did to the Jews. It has even succeeded in being listed as a warning in the rating of movies. I happen to notice a few weeks ago when part of the parental warning included “scenes of people smoking” along with sex and nudity. Good lord!
You don’t want to smoke, that is fine, but please stop the lies and exaggeration! However never except the see the truth of health risk or dangers when it comes to PC accepted behaviours.
I had no trouble with the banning of smoling in bars and restaurants, and especially airplanes.
I was ok with putting a warning on the labels, it is a hazerdous substance after all…but I have to say I think their point has gone about as far as it can. The reason given by Gar Mahood was that it was time to change the marketing campaign, claiming no company keeps the same advertising campaign for 10 years…..if thats the only reason for tying up time in Parliament and within the bureacracy then Gar has outlived his usefuleness.
Gar needs this to raise money and keep paying those on the payroll. Anti smoking in now a self perpetuating industry.
Never fails, all unions, lobby groups, aid groups, need new victims to protect.
Wanna know how I made myself quit? I decided to minimize the amount of taxes I paid to the ##%@&!! government. Yes, I really did hate the government that badly. Still do. I smoke the occasional cigar when I’m out of Canada, quit when I come back.
Up yours, Ottawa.
Alain nails it @ 9:02. The PC acceptable stuff gets a pass.
What Doug said @ 7:38.
john begley, thanks for my laugh of the day.
“anti-smoking activist Barb Tarbox” wow, that’s quite the unfortunate surname if I’ve ever seen one.
Stephen @ 9:27 puts his finger on exactly what not only this anti-smoking campaign is all about, but what all the other campaigns evolve into, that is about becoming a fund raiser to keep the salaries going.
Wasn’t it the founder of MADD that recently said as much about what has happened to MADD. Think also Greenpeace, Sierra Club and the list goes on.
The latest example of the this is the MS Society is opposed the clinical trials of the vein procedure. Why, is it because some staffers have cushy jobs that might disappear.
Phantom @7:31 – I’ve heard the same stories. What heartless b@stards they are. It’s not enough to be dying, but patients are forced to go through involuntary nicotine withdrawal as well.
Stephen @9:27 – “I had no trouble with the banning of smoling in bars and restaurants, and especially airplanes.”
People have a right to allow or disallow smoking on their own private property. I’d happily inhale some (to me) disgusting second-hand smoke in the name of freedom. It is not the government’s business to run our lives.
If government really cared about helping smokers quit they’d be handing out cigarette tax purchased nicotine gum and patches instead of syringes.
It must be government’s addiction to cigarette taxes that keeps them from doing it.
Mamba,
The purpose of mentioning my position wasnt to advocate but to provide context. That even as a supporter of the early positions I find their new positions overdone and unecessary.
I am finding MADD to be fast approaching the same place. Most unions, particularly public service ones, went over the line a couple of decades ago. The private sector ones at least reap what they sow.
Bureacracies, including military ones, unions, advocacy groups all seek new missions to justify their exitence unless there is appropriate leadership exerted or external circumstances naturally clip the weed like growth. This has and will happen to the green movement, happened to the aid groups etc, anyone in the helping business. This is why need is endless, but the imperative to help, let alone the resources, are not.
Gar Mahood is just the latest example to prove the point.
Have you ever wondered what would happen if gay bars looked like cigarette packages?
Or abortion mills, for that matter? ….

Won’t happen because both are protected coddled groups ala leftards. What’s next drinking and driving crashes on booze bottles? Pictures of STDs on condoms and birth control pills, alas where will the do-gooder nanny nation lovers stop?
I am not usually one to defend smoking, but using Barb Tarbox as a reason to stop smoking is like using a lotto winner to say that the lotto 6/49 is a good retirement plan.
She was 42 when she died of lung cancer due. The cancer is blamed on smoking. How many of us know smokers who don’t have cancer at 42. How many of us know non-smokers who have cancer at an early age. I believe she would have had cancer regardless. Smoking may have hastened it or complicated it, but the millions of people who smoke and live relatively healthy lives, present a different story.
The bottom line is the government is addicted to an easy tax target and they know these photos will do nothing to reduce those tax dollars. The anti smoking crowd thinks they have acheived some huge victory by getting these photos on packages, but a victory would be a total ban on smoking.
As for me, I don’t care. There is no smoking in my house or the places I frequent so if you want to smoke somewhere else, have at it.
What’s really amusing about the picture controversy is the National Post ran an article on Wednesday which noted how utterly and completely flawed the methodology Health Canada used to gather its “statistics” was. For example, surveys that are intended to garner an honest opinion, as opposed to what the survey sponsor wants to hear, try to hide their identity. Health Canada told survey takers up front who sponsored the survey. Honest surveys on social issues tend to be anonymous, because of a tendency of people to please the interviewer and a desire to be liked by the interviewer. For example, when asked how much they drink each week, people will decrease the amount substantially in face-to-face interviews, and be more honest in an anonymous interview. Health Canada only employed face-to-face interviews.
This seems to me like a case of “we know what we want to do, now let’s invent some statistics to prove it”. Sorta like AGW, doncha think?

When I pointed out Nazi-like behavior from Kate, there was a very clear line that can be drawn. Nazis villified Jews by claiming they spread disease, just like Kate villifies Gays by claiming they spread disease.
Verses Alain who compares an anti-smoking campaign to Nazi propaganda without any attempt to explain how the two can be equated.
Nobody is saying smokers spread disease, aside from the fact that they now have to step outside if they want to hack a butt, but that’s hardly vilification.
As for this campaign, it’s harsh to be sure. Will it work? Probably to some degree. As someone in the Globe and Mail put it… parents who smoke now have to deal with their kids coming up to them and saying “see this, this is going to be you.” That’s a pretty strong msg, and between strong msging, and simply making it inconvenient, the number of people smoking has gone down considerably over the past decade. That said… if you want to do something that costs you loads of cash and delivers you zero benefits (at least dope gets you high), go nuts. Just don’t do where other people have to inhale your sh!t.
john; Are you saying that gays dont spread aids.Maybe you`ve never heard of the disease.A disease that should have the sufferers quaranteened. It would never have spread so far if it had been treated like the communicable disease that it is.Gays have never taken responsibility for its spread.
‘…parents who smoke now have to deal with their kids coming up to them and saying “see this, this is going to be you.”‘ Da, tovarich. Indoctrinate the children, you wouldn’t be the first. And maybe the little brainwashed sh*ts should be encouraged to snitch their parents out to the authorities?
Smoking is an activity. Gay sex is an activity. One is far more deadly than the other. Now watch who you call a Nazi, you little Stalinist. (Oh, John, sometime, for fun, google “homosexuality SA”.)
