Why this blog?
Until this moment I have been forced to listen while media and politicians alike have told me "what Canadians think". In all that time they never once asked.
This is just the voice of an ordinary Canadian yelling back at the radio -
"You don't speak for me."

Great interview. The fellow being interviewed had it right.
the U.N. has OCD?
let’s ship them a trainload of prozac.
The problem with the UN is that out of some 150+ members less than about 30 are realistically democratic.
The rest are dominated bu despots and dictators….with a signifigant bloc that is islamic….
One the basic tendants of Islam is not so much it’s much heralded 5 pillars..but institutionalised ANTI-SEMISTISM (anti Hebrew)which has morphed into anti-western.
The dominate share of Petroleum reserves in Islamic hands gives this bloc economic leverage.
Visa-Vis Israel, the islamics desire not so much a Palestinian state as the destruction of Israel…..which they view as a religious obligation.
One of the things the Wiki-Leaks has illuminated is the rapidly emerging polarization of the Middle East from Arab versus Islraeli to Shia(Iran) versus Sunni (arab).
This pits Iran against Saudi-Arabian Wahibi’s….Iran’s virtual control of the Straits of Hormuz threatened 80% of ME oil exports and the Iranian meddling in Yemen is directed to pinch-off the Red Sea and Suez.
Irans proxi’s Hamas and Hezbollah have Israel surrounded short range.
Iran’s Shiites currently outnumber the saudi’s Sunnites making a Sunnite accommodation with Israel to counter a nuclear armed Iran feasable.
and how many $billions does Canada send off tot he UN every year to support such nonsense?
Sasquatch:
“The problem with the UN is that out of some 150+ members less than about 30 are realistically democratic.”
Amoung the many things I hope Stephen Harper does once the CPC earns a majority mandate, is to push for a new international organization to replace and destroy the UN – an almost as flawed an organization as the league of nations that was Wilson’s legacy and that was a rush attempt by Truman to correct that one and create one that FDR envisioned.
The new body would have two parts – a social/diplomatic voting body and a body dealing with economic affairs. The first body would see country’s voting power determined by two things – population and a counties level of personal freedom index.
The second body would see countries votes based on GDP and their level of economic freedom.
Canad would score in the upper middle of the pack in both areas – the CRTC and cancon counting against it in the first house and the wheat board and supply-management in the second house.
China – naturally would score very low in both while the EU would do worse than Canada in both. Many – a majority of countries would be granted only observer status in one or both houses.
This would create transparency – showing each country it’s points of hypocrisy on both types of freedom and create pressure domestically to increase ones countries position on the index.
The keys to it being successful are threefold – that its sponsor not be the US and that one of its initial signatories be the US while simultaneously it resigns from the UN and evicts it from its NY headquarters.
Perhaps the latter two events can be the first two things that John Bolton can do immediately after he is appointed secretary of state by POTUS Tim Pawlenty in January 2013.
Oh, and my suggestion for where this august world changing/saving body should be headquartered?
None other than arguably the most ethnically diverse city in The world – Toronto. (it goes without saying that such a move would earn the everlasting gratitude of Torontonians for making it (finally) a real world-class city for which they will reward the CPC with several more majorities. But that opportunity, of course, would have nothing to do with picking Toronto as the location…)
Kate, thought you might enjoy this post from Lubos, especcially the video near the end.

Wishful thinking: The Speech That Closed the United Nations
Yeah wishful thinking.
Remember when Somali pirates fired Aks at an Indian warship….which promptly created a hole in the water…..or the Russian solution to pirates….that sort of thing inspires respect.
The UN was designed to hamstring nations from meaningful action.
Except Russia and China.
Any organisation that let those two permanently sit on the security council was suspect from the beginning.
It is no surprise, therefore, that the UN would attack Israel.
Have a major player leave the UN and watch it (hopefully) unravel.
Someone give me an example of some actual, concrete good the U.N. has ever done. I’m not saying it doesn’t exist; I think I’ve heard good things about UNICEF. But what about Rwanda? Darfur?
I despise the U.N. and think any civilized country should withdraw from it, or at least disregard it entirely. No doubt nations need a diplomating talking-shop, but obviously this organization has gone far beyond that. I’ll happily admit to being no expert, so someone tell me where I’m wrong.
At least kick the b@stards out of that building in Manhattan.
And by “diplomating” I of course mean “diplomatic”.
“diplomating” is a perfectly fine new gerund.
Danke schoen, glasnost. Dunno how it happened, but I kinda like it myself.
This was posted on SDA in July, and it’s still relevant:

I guess even the Brits still don’t entirely suck.
I think I’ve heard good things about UNICEF.
~Black Mamba
When I was a child in the ’60s we used to collect nickles in our UNICEF boxes when we went out on Halloween.
I found out in the late ’80s that the UN gave a lot of that money to the Viet Cong.
Love the tie.
The UN runs eugenics programs.
It keeps China and Russia in seats of power and privilege.
It has failed Rwanda (among other things).
Screw the lot of them.
I’ve studied this topic for years now. Neuer, the almost lonely voice critical of the UN at the UN, is great, actually irreplaceable.
Unfortunately, this great interview is totally spoiled by the horrible necktie.
Gord Tulk @ 2:17, good idea.
Religion is a load of bull. Nothing in the bible can be historically proven.
