Don’t waste your time. This is a right-wing blog and like all right-wing blogs, it has its share of ideologues who switch off their brain the moment they turn on their computer.
The people here aren’t neccessarily anti-Muslim. They are just against anything that doesn’t conform with their ideology. They dislike all of these things, beliefs and people equally. On any given day, you will find here equally venomous and irrational diatribes against everything ranging from Toronto to wind power to animals to average Canadians. Hating everything they disagree with is their raison d’etre.
You will find here the usual mix of outright hatred and subtle prejudice, camouflaged through sophisticated arguments. In some cases, the arguments have been finely honed, but the charade occassionally comes crashing down with aplomb. I recall a recent thread here that declared that the installment of a carpet with what one might call ‘oriental’ motifs is akin to an Islamic invasion. It was truly hilarious. However you will only appreciate the humor of all of this if you take a detached view and see half of these diatribes for what they are – the adult equivalent of frustrated petulant children.
They are, ultimately, harmless. If they had any influence, they would not be here. They certainly are not going to be dictating Canada’s policy. If they had the aptitude or ability to do so, and if their views are as widely held as some of them would have you believe, they would be sitting in parliament. But they are not. Let them believe what we want to believe. In most cases, they are preaching to the converted. On occassion, a passerby like yourself will come by and try to talk some reason into it, but you really shouldn’t. This is not a place for reasoned discussion. This is a venting post. And there are a lot of angry people waiting for someone to yell at. Unless you have a fetish for being insulted, don’t bother.
You might be wondering why I come to this site. There are some genuine gems here. There are few things I enjoy as much as watching ET deliver the odd masterclass in dismantling arguments. Others offer great insight and views, though they often fall back into their ideological shell when challenged. Most, however, don’t have a clue. Take the statement about nuking them, for instance. I’m not religious – but I do find it odd that it seems to be ok to mock and make fun of christianity but nothing else. The network can’t cherry pick. Its either all or none.

Prohibition of images of Mohammed emerged only in the 16th c. There are lots of paintings and illustrations from before then in many museums around the world.
One has to wonder why it developed. The prohibition against images of god is a basic Judaic tradition, and Islam, after all, takes most of its religious ideas from Judaism..and its political and economic ideas are pure 7th c tribalism.
But Mohammed is not a god, so, why did it develop?
Furthermore, this prohibition has to cover only Muslims. How can it be assumed to be a rule for Jews, Christians, Buddhists, Hindus, polytheists, atheists and etc? That’s equally puzzling why Muslims consider that the rules of their religion apply universally.
After all, Judaism forbids images of god (idolatry) but I haven’t heard any threats of violence against da Vinci and Rembrandt ..
As for mocking the prophets, well, Muslims have to learn the lesson of ‘hubris’ or arrogance. It may surprise them but they aren’t the only know-it-alls in the world and it is possible that other people and other beliefs might be of even more value than their own.

As a lurker, much like myself, I am sure you have noticed that a lot of the postings sound the same, albeit coming from people with constantly changing monikers. I refer you to the thread on the carpet with oriental motifs. The vast majority of threads said the same thing – the carpets are the first wave of something sinister. Kate’s blog is popular with people from a variety of opinions and a broad spectrum of backgrounds, but I would wager a fair penny that most of them disappear rather quickly after being shouted down by the resident ideologues. You will always find dissenting posts on the threads, but those people rarely contribute in a consistent manner. For the most part, its mostly the same people posting over and over again. Not too many.
For what its worth, I have no idea what “straight trippin'” is. Enlighten me.

I trust you appreciated the parallel I drew between some poster here who wants to nuke them and the similarity that those statements bear to the words of some rather right-wing clerics in Iran. So yes, I am deeply aware of the irony. Hatred appears to prompt imitation.
