  1. “The Black Sea”
    Wired describes the allied flottila closing on Georgian coast, including a DDG, an SSN, the command ship USS Mount Whitney (”onsidered by some to be the most sophisticated Command, Control, Communications, Computer, and Intelligence (C4I) ship ever commissioned”) and the Coast Guard cutter USCGC Dallas. Wired describes the naval force:
    “The vanguard includes the Burke-class destroyer McFaul (pictured)and the armed Coast Guard cutter Dallas. (Another Dallas, a nuclear submarine, is also in the area.) Trailing behind is the command ship Mount Whitney with, reportedly, Polish and Canadian frigates as escorts.””
    “The arrival of the USS Mount Whitney is interesting because it implies that the “relief operation” might get much larger. By exploiting the fear generated by the Russian incursion into Georgia, the USN may position a presence in the Black Sea than heretofore, something Russia probably doesn’t want. But how will they stop it without directly confronting the US? Maybe they should consider cashing in their chips and remove their forces from Georgia proper. Moscow has made its point but to carry things further may no longer be to Russia’s advantage.”

  3. The latest crude oil and petroleum* (see definitions below) US import data have been released. See http://www.eia.doe.gov/pub/oil_gas/petroleum/data_publications/company_level_imports/current/import.html
    Canada, again, beats out every country. Note the petroleum (all hydrocardon data – see below) data for 2007: average daily amounts is 2,470,000 for Canada (number 1) and only 1,590,000 for Mexico (number 2) and 1,434,000 for Saudia Arabia (number 3). Canada exports 72% MORE to the US than does Saudia Arabia – about 21.5% of their consumption, compared to 12.5% for Saudia Arabia.
    *From http://www.eia.doe.gov/glossary/index.html, some definitions:
    “Petroleum: A broadly defined class of liquid hydrocarbon mixtures. Included are crude oil, lease condensate, unfinished oils, refined products obtained from the processing of crude oil, and natural gas plant liquids. Note: Volumes of finished petroleum products include nonhydrocarbon compounds, such as additives and detergents, after they have been blended into the products.”
    “Crude oil: A mixture of hydrocarbons that exists in liquid phase in natural underground reservoirs and remains liquid at atmospheric pressure after passing through surface separating facilities. Depending upon the characteristics of the crude stream, it may also include:
    Small amounts of hydrocarbons that exist in gaseous phase in natural underground reservoirs but are liquid at atmospheric pressure after being recovered from oil well (casinghead) gas in lease separators and are subsequently commingled with the crude stream without being separately measured. Lease condensate recovered as a liquid from natural gas wells in lease or field separation facilities and later mixed into the crude stream is also included;
    Small amounts of nonhydrocarbons produced with the oil, such as sulfur and various metals;
    Drip gases, and liquid hydrocarbons produced from tar sands, oil sands, gilsonite, and oil shale.
    Liquids produced at natural gas processing plants are excluded. Crude oil is refined to produce a wide array of petroleum products, including heating oils; gasoline, diesel and jet fuels; lubricants; asphalt; ethane, propane, and butane; and many other products used for their energy or chemical content.”

  4. Just this weekend in rural Alberta,180 miles outh of the oilsands… A van containing 4-5 IMAMs was seen driving arount the airstrip. A van with ONTARIO licence plates.

  5. Kate – can we PLEASE ban this idiot, “new”? It’s acutely painful to scan its* posts in passing.
    *neuter pronoun used advisedly.

  6. Grundig is an excellent radio. You’ll get the hang of it quickly!! The key is an external antenna! My son strung an ordiany piece of galvinized wire from the house to the garage, about 50 feet. He could pick up AM stations as far as Mexico, from S. Saskatchewan. Most radios have an “external antenna jack.” Happy listening!!
    PS: There used to be “extremist” shortwave broadcasts out of S. america., Mostly right wing revolutionaries that were loads of fun to listen to! If you can get an old Ham operator to help you with the antenna–you’ll have a lot fun!!

  7. Tenebris: “Kate – can we PLEASE ban this idiot, “new”? It’s acutely painful to scan its* posts in passing.” — Shame on you. I believe “new” is dealing with ESL (English second language) — I welcome his comments and you don’t have to read them if you don’t like them.
