As for selective teaching of history, that’s nothing new. I grew up in Africa, and when I came to Canada I was astounded to see how distorted the history and geography lessons were in school.
Ian Smith was a racist bastard, all whites in Africa hated all blacks, Mugabe was a saint, Zimbabwe’s problems were all due to drought, that sort of thing. I had no idea high school teachers could get worldly matters so wrong.

I’m meandering and speculating, but I think what we are seeing in multiculturalism and even the movements towards inclusive ideologies (Islamism, EU, UN) is/are the misguided and uncertain steps in dealing with the results of a world that has, via air travel and the electronic media of radio, television and the internet – moved out of the ‘rooted in the local space and time’ era of world history.
We don’t live in our home towns or nations anymore. We are all not only world travellers but we move from city to city to nation to nation. AND, we are in constant touch with the rest of the planet.
The error that we made in dealing with this new spatial flexibility – is multiculturalism. We identified newcomers as still part of their old nation and culture. We somehow felt that this was an acknowledgement of globalism. Of the reality that we all, even though having originated in one space, were free to move to another space. And still, remain the same person! That insistence that the flexibility of globalism meant that we moved and moved and moved – yet remained the same – is a basic error.
We set up multiculturalism in Ejrope and Canada. This meant that immigrants came, spatially, but, remained in their beliefs and behaviour – as they were in their ‘original space’. Result?
A profound alienation. All biological organisms must be ‘located’ in their proximate environment; they can’t be transplanted and expected to behave as if they were in their ‘old space’. But this is what multiculturalism promotes!
Coupled with this profound alienation, with its insistence that you, the newcomers, remain in a closed ‘subset’ – peripheral to the current nation, is subsidizing these subsets by the gov’t. This sets up ethnic, religious etc groups in a closed, adversarial and competitive attitude towards each other – as they fight for gov’t funding and political power.
So – in Europe and in Canada, we have set up isolated multicultural groups, locked into their old beliefs and behaviour, – and acting not in collaboration but in an adversarial competition.
In the particular case of Islam outside of the Middle East, since multiculturalism excludes them from political and social integration with the mainstream – another result is that they search for a ‘metanarrative’, an over-reaching, encompassing ideology that unites them all, regardless of which European or N. American city in which they live. This is Islamism. Not quite as bad as Islamic fascism, but, as an ‘ism’, it rejects beliefs in the local laws and normative behaviour in favour of loyalty to the ‘ism’. In this case, Islamism.
Islamism provides a set of integrated beliefs and behaviour that make the individual feel a part of a broad community – rather than isolated within a subset of the nation in which you happen to be located.
Multiculturalism is extremely dangerous because its isolationism and rejection of inclusion in the nation, turns members of these subsets into easy prey for idealistic utopian cults – Islamism…which can then lead to Islamic fascism.
In a related juxtaposition, I employ a young man from Nova Scotia who chats nightly with his high school girlfriend back home.
Last night she commented on “An Inconvienent Truth”. It seems the entire student body was recently herded into the gym to view AG’s propaganda bit. No opposing views were provided, this garbage was presented as fact.

Very nice, irwin daisy. The notion of ‘born as a pure empty bucket’ – and maturing into only whatever is put into that bucket – means that these naive optimists consider that everyone is whatever they are – as a direct result of ‘education’ or ‘socialization’. Very mechanical.
On the surface, they can’t accept that people can be, entirely on their own, malicious, hostile, adversarial, jealous – and even, pure evil. And they postulate a basic unverified axiom that capitalism is evil and socialism is good.
How do they explain the intertribal hatreds in the Middle East – held for centuries – long before the west ever turned up on their doorstep?
Don’t exclude the U.S. from the multiculturalism party. If you don’t think there’s multi-culturalism in the U.S., then you’ve never watched the BET channel or you don’t recall the O.J. Simpson trial. Or you’ve never been to the large pockets in America where Spanish is the primary language – or even to Hollywood, FL where you’ll hear as much French as English.
Just because there isn’t an official “policy” of multiculturalism there doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. The fact is, a land of opportunity means the enterprising will thrive in whatever culture they want.
What are the alternatives to multiculturalism?
1. Have a true melting pot, where the culture is in flux with the changing demographics. This is what America is supposed to be about. But now that there are different types of people who are expanding their slice of the demographic pie (ie. Muslims and Hispanics immigrating instead of white Europeans), it isn’t such a good idea anymore for the mom and apple pie crowd. The fact that people are scared of the fact that the white population will soon be less than 50% means that they don’t really like the melting pot idea.
2. Have all native citizans and immigrants conform to established culture and principles and learn no other – probably the ideal scenario for most of the readership of this site, but a culture that stands still is one that falls behind. Plus, in a free country you can’t enforce this, and in no time there will be a backlash that will lead to defacto multiculturalism.
In a diverse country, we have to rely on laws to hold everything together, not culture.
So the Holocaust didn’t happen?

Is it time for Canada to have an Oath of Allegiance? If a person won’t pledge their heart behind the cornerstones of Canadian society such as democracy, individual rights and freedoms, and the rule of common law are they really capable of fulfilling the obligations of citizenship? Is citizenship given too cheaply?
Truthseeker has it right. Canada needs to emphasize the American melting pot model of immigration. Without immigrants having the willingness to integrate enough to effectively participate in citizen obligations, how can we reasonably expect immigration won’t erode stability in our society?
The burden to prove worthiness of citizenship should be much more shouldered by individual immigrants than by government bureaucrats.

I am flattered that you say I have it right, but I don’t think you quite understood what I was getting at. The melting pot isn’t about immigrants integrating into a static society, but rather it is about them helping to mold that society. That’s a melting pot. You can’t melt butter into the stew without it altering the stew’s taste. So that’s why I said that if you are to accept a melting pot model, you have to accept that the culture and norms will change according to what is melted into the pot – and right now, that will be a lot of Muslims. Are you willing to accept this?
truthseeker- the US is not trapped within multiculturalism; it does not have a legislated policy of encouraging immigrants to instantly freeze their old culture, isolate it and themselves from others, define it as an hereditary ‘set’, and have the gov’t fund its continuity by funding its schools, meeting places, newspapers, special education, etc etc.
And – set up each group in competition with other ‘multicultural groups’, each adversarial and fighting for funding and political power.
The Spanish influence in the south is due to the proximity of Mexico, and Mexico’s blatant open abuse of Americans and the American economy by its illegal immigrants.

The alternative to multiculturalism is to stop defining people as members of ‘origins’ – whether that origin be ethnic, linguistic or religious, and define them as members of the current society in which they permanently reside. Therefore, your first and your basic identity here, is that you are Canadian. No ethnic or religious groups setting up isolate identities. No adversarial competition for power and funds. If you want to remember the ‘land of your fathers’ – fine, do it and pay for it yourselves. But, your primary identification, now, is Canada. Or Britain. Or France. etc.
As such, these diverse backgrounds will coalesce to form and emerging commonality of perspective that is Canadian. We have deliberately – since the era of Trudeau – rejected Canada and Canadianness. Instead – we set up, as I keep ranting, two dangerous divisions.
The major division which is linguistic, divided Canada in two. Just like that – a slice of the gigantic knife of the gods. Quebec and the Roc. Set them up as adversarial combatants for money and power. Chretien kept this alive and well, because he set himself and his Liberals up as the only thing keeping the two blocs together. He set up a climate of fear – for his own political power.
Then, Trudeau divided the ROC into further subsets. Multiculturalism – enshrined in our charter, trumps individual rights. So-that further weakens the ROC, by defining it as made up of adversarial ethnic groups. Again, the Liberals encouraged this, for the same reason – it kept them in power because they bribed each group with funds and power, and set them up against each other.
We have to reject both types of divisions and define ourselves as only – Canadians. The rest is up to us. Not to any government.
Europe has to do the same. It’s in worse shape than Canada because of the number of, in particular, Muslim immigrants, and because Islamism in Europe has linked itself to Islamic fascism in the Middle East. By Islamism I mean an ideology that unites Muslims into a feeling of ‘nationhood’ – this feeling is not permitted them within the ideology of multiculturalism.

Canada has to define all its permanent residents and citizens as only Canadian. That also means, no dual citizenship. It means the end of groupism and multiculturalism. But our charter – is based on both these divisions – our Charter divided Canada into two parts linguistically. And then divided the ROC into further subsets.

An oath would deal with what TruthSeeker mentions. Because along with immigration of another culture … adaptation has to take place, one culture is going to adapt to the other.. the question is which way will the adaptation flow?

truthseeker – the melting pot metaphor as a stew is not exactly valid when dealing with beliefs and behaviour. You can’t necessarily take a ‘bit of butter’ and a ‘few carrots’ etc into a stew and define the result as a conglomeration of these parts. The point of the melting pot is that all the parts together create an energy dynamics (you cook the stew) that changes ALL parts into a whole.
This whole is constantly evolving; the whole is not just a mechanical accumulation of bits.
It is particularly difficult in Europe right now because they have never been immigrant countries. Their reaction to the overwhelming escape of Muslims from the dictatorships of the ME was not to assimilate them into their nations. Again, Europe has not been an immigrant destination. The reaction was to isolate them into ‘subsets’, specific groups defined by origin (nation, religion, ethnicity, language).
The reaction to this exclusion has been a massive movement to a pan-Islamism – a highly emotional narrative that bonds its members to that Islamism and rejects entirely the nature of the host country.

Yep, the Holocaust never occured even though my father saw the Nordhausen KZ first hand, whilst riding past on the trains. You might say my father was a ‘hostile witness’ as he was then a Hitler Youth member aged 13. The purpose of granting refugee status is to provide safety and shelter to those who genuinely require it, but if conditions improve sometime in the future, these people, in any country other than Canada, must return to help re-build their homeland. I repeat, in every other country in the world EXCEPT Canada. Refugees should never be granted citizenship and this is why. Refugees circumvent the safeguards (background investigation by Citizenship & Immigration) Canada has put in place to scrutinize all foreingers applying to immigrate here BEFORE they are given permission set foot in our country. In stark contrast, refugees just show up, far too many without any identification because they destroy it before they arrive. Don’t forget, before anyone is permitted to board an international flight they must present identification. So why do such a high percentage of refugees arrive here without ID? Because they want to conceal their true identity. Canada grants a higher percentage of refugees entry (ie believes their stories – gullible)than any other country in the world. Refugees are immediately eligible and receive much bigger government cheques per month for food and shelter, full medical, more benefits than any Canadian war veteran has ever been eligible for. Over the past decade more than 36,000 warrants have been issued for the arrest of refugees who after initially showing up, were scheduled for an interview to determine their eligibilty for refugee status and then released into our society on social assistance pending their interview. They were never seen or heard from again. 36,000! Where are they? Nobody knows. Who are they? Nobody knows? If the current worldwide terror war and the fact that more than 36,000 foreign complete strangers loose somewhere in Canada doesn’t make the hair on the back of your neck stand up, nothing will. Granting refugees citizenship is a Liberal gift courtesy of P.E.T. Once they obtain citizenship, former immigrants historically vote Liberal folks, that’s what it is all about. Canada is for sale. Canadian citizenship has been reduced to little more than a vehicle for the Liberals to boost their voter base at the expense of the country as a whole. Guess what that also does for our national security? Don’t worry – be happy.
The reason this happened is that the people who wanted all this immigration in the first place went against the public will. Now these crazed immigrants will be used against those that let them in… the powers that be.

So long as the basic tenets of our western democratic society are FULLY supported by new immigrants, why not. But what do you do with butter that won’t melt into the stew? Therefore, Canada’s western society would remain a western society, albeit tasting more similar to the American recipe, if all immigrants are obligated and encouraged to integrate.

Thatcher was the only right of center leader in Britain over the last half century.
Clinton ? the biggest tax increase in history was in 1993 , his first year of office.

The problem is the despots in the third world and all the corruption that goes with those guys, which the Left always said the right was in bed with. There was some truth to that during the Cold War. But now why isn’t the left and right agreeing on who the bad guys are and working to remove them and install some sanity?

So far they seem to be backing away from this option as they would rather foment unrest in Iraq than have it visited upon their heads.
The Iranians may play “white knuckle express” but in the final analysis they don’t have a death wish for their base of operations. A little death and destruction here and there is okay, as long as they don’t take an absolute pounding like Hassan Nasrallah.
But if you are the LIEberals you just steal from the public overtly and compromise governmental authority by having ‘tainted elections’.
If Iberia is waiting for ‘purity in government’ he will be long dead before it arrives. Even an elementary history class should teach a student the basic hard nosed cut and thrust of political life.

Everyone has a different opinion of what is centre. My litmus test for being a left winger/socialist is whether the government promoted trade unions and advocated for nationalization of industry.
If I concede that Trudeau was a lefty, Clark, Mulroney, Chretien (who gutted the public service and social programs more than anyone ever),Martin and Harper were not left wing.
If I concede that Carter and Clinton were lefties (a real stretch), Reagan, Bush 1 and Bush 2 were not.
