Stelco Holdings Inc. said on Monday that it plans to idle part of its Hamilton plant in order to “ensure the survival” of the company, as U.S. tariffs squeeze its sales.
Stelco said the decision will impact up to 500 employees.
In a memo obtained by CBC News on Monday, the company said it will indefinitely idle its cold-rolled and coated operations at its Hamilton Works plant, with operations set to begin winding down on Oct. 9.

My daughter is a computer programmer. She recently told me she is just glad to have a job. There is so much work, her company could hire at least 5 more programmers but has decided to wait at least one year to see what happens.
Another friend’s son who has worked as a video game animator for the last 14 years is leaving because of AI and is entering trade school to become a plumber at the age of 37.
I have been through 7 recessions. I do not think things will get better until fall 2027 at least. It is time to “hunker down” and do not spend money.
350 jobs. 350 families. Perhaps as many as 500 families.
Now add the economic multiplier of those jobs.
At least they can take some consolation that when they go to pay $6.50 for a gallon of milk, they are supporting a Quebec multimillionaire.

Where is steel coming from that doesn’t face tariffs? Could it be…China? So, they can’t compete domestically against Chinese steel but we’re going to compete against those commodities in Europe?

I think Chinese steel coming into Canada only became a problem for them recently when that steel is staying in Canada instead of immediately being routed to the US to help China get around the US tariffs on Chinese steel.

Iowa is very Republican and President Trump is doing as all politicians do, he is rewarding his supporters.
Iowa is a Right to Work State, unlike the closed-shop unionized commieland of Canada.
I worked in downtown Hamilton for a couple of years. We nicknamed the downtown area “Scooterville” because of the vast number of morbidly obese former steel workers in their 40’s and 50’s riding scooters around after they picked up their benefit cheques. There’s more than 1 reason Stelco is in trouble, maybe having half the union people they are paying sitting on scooters and drinking their disability cheques in downtown bars all day doesn’t help.
I want every single one of the unionized commies sent packing. They have destroyed Canada and previously, the steel industry in the USA. Time for a Right to Work law, and a total dissolution of the Monarchy of Canada.
