Glass Opposition Benches

Hansard Feb 12;

Hon. Marlene Jennings (Notre-Dame-de-Grâce—Lachine, Lib.):
Mr. Speaker, this government is allowing an increasing number of judges’ positions to remain empty. Worse yet, while the Conservatives are going over their list of defeated candidates with a fine toothed comb, they are turning their noses up at qualified candidates. Apparently, it will be a Conservative or no one.
Will the minister put an end to favouritism and appoint qualified, independent members, who are respected by the Canadian legal community?
Hon. Peter Van Loan (Leader of the Government in the House of Commons and Minister for Democratic Reform, CPC):
Mr. Speaker, as we have pointed out repeatedly, we are appointing the most qualified judges.
It is interesting that the member for Notre-Dame-de-Grâce—Lachine would speak about the quality of the appointments being made by our government when her government, in which she was a minister, appointed somebody named Luciano Del Negro to the Immigration and Refugee Board*. I believe he is the husband of the member of Notre-Dame-de-Grâce—Lachine.

  1. Appointments versus elections are at the root of our political problems. Our lack of “checks and balances” in Canada. Whoops, there’s that US style terminology again.
Actually it has nothing to do with US style. It has to do with patronage and corruption fostered by a stunted Parliamentary system that never evolved because it suited the Natural Governing Party to freeze it in the format of a small population in an agricultural society of the 1800’s.
I’m not saying the Librano$ are as antiquated or as dangerous as Islamofacists, but there are some parallels to tribalism.
We need an elected Senate and a nomination and approintment process for judges that gets fully disclosed and adjudicated only by elected bodies.
This has nothing to do with “US-style”. It has to do with democracy, which started in the Anglosphere centuries ago, and needs to continuously evolve and adapt to changing conditions; otherwise we’ll end up in decline like France, which is the model of top down paternalism that Duel Dijon prefers.

  2. “I’m done. You can go back to your incessant insults and putdowns.”
Well, in the real world, you logged onto a site that supports PMSH and lambastes (rightly so) the lieberals for their corruption and arrogance. You whine about the PM being no better. That’s where we and you part ways. You can’t compare the PM with the scum that you still support!! Are you married to a liberal? I mean, you obviously can read and write so you’re not handicapped but you still support them. It really makes one scratch his head.
BTW, of course you’re done, you don’t have a leg to stand on.

  3. Jonathon Ross,
Did you ever consider that the CPC appointments were made on acutally LEGAL merit?
We already know what the Liberals think of as qualified! Just becuase the CPC might have a different opinion of qualification based on legal practice rather than sexual practice.

  4. The G&M shutdown the comments section Re:this Subject, Truth hurts I guess or is that it is like one of their polls when it’s not going in their favour “Pull the Plug”
I went to officiallyscrewed & viewed the Video, Nicholson & VanLoan gave it back good.
    Hypocrits in action

  5. Hey, Harper just threw back a good one back to Dion, re appointments, mentioning who Cotlier appointed to the Supreme Court. I imagine the whole list is in the hands of every minister to be used when necessary.
Now, duceppe is asking for the money announced for the ecotrust be given now, without strings. Harper says it will be in the budget and he expects duceppe to support the budget, if he wants que to get the money. Questions on the environment but holland still silent. Where is he.
When dion brought up the charter and harper not adhering to it he got a reply saying this govt believes in the charter but have some problems with it, we believe property rights should be included.
Layton just goofed again, instead of saying Mr McKay, or the honorable minister, he said Mr Hard.
laughter and it took him a few seconds to finally get his question out.

  6. We have to be a little more benevolent to people like Jonathon, folks. You have to realize that the great majority of small “l” Liberals out there are slowly coming to the conclusion that they have been backing a bunch of liars, thieves, cut-throats, cheats, embezzlers, etc., etc. for most of their lives. It is through forms such as this that the scales are beginning to fall from their eyes, we don’t need to denigrate the individuals that still cling to the belief that the Liberal Party of Canada should be the natural governing party. The dyke has been breached and the MSM can no longer hold back the truth. The charlatans that have been running this country for decades have and are being exposed on a daily basis. They cannot stand up to the scrutiny, and their followers are undergoing a personal meltdown. They will grasp at any straw to substantiate their personal beliefs because that is easier to do than to admit that they have been duped for most of their adult lives. So enough with the off-colour comments and indivdual attacks, Kate’s Krew are above that. Keep exposing the facts and the truth will emerge, eventually the liberal voters in this country will realize that the have been taken to the cleaners by the biggest bunch of crooks/con artists ever assembled in the Twentieth Century. This salient fact gives us hope for the Twenty-first Century.

  7. Irwin Daisy: “…is at the very least a dishonest broker and not to be trusted, or have criminal tendencies themselves.”
Great comment, Irwin. That sentence could’ve been right at home in a Dickin’s essay. Fits Liberal corruption apologists like J.R. snugger than O.J.’s bloody glove.

  8. Off topic, but on Newman the Libs are stroking the income trust issue, trying to save their bacon. I guess it gets Dion’s y2kyoto scam off the front pages while they re-focus their energies on a wedge issue that husts the Cons in an emotive way – attacking seniors’ retirement futures. Hypocrites, they will never learn how to “govern”. They have lost their game. The cons on the other hand, don’t look any better on the issue, a blank page of “calculations” only serves to remind seniors and small investors, that Bay Street insiders rule the day and that “cash flow is king”. Yeah, only if cash flow goes to government, first.

  9. In Jonathon’s defense, he is not tolerant of corruption within his own party, and is not afraid to take them to task publicly when he sees funny business. Having read some of his stuff in the past, I get the feeling that he thinks that the conservative party must have the same types of things going on in the backrooms as the liberal party.
I’m not saying they do, I’m not saying they don’t.

  10. I thought when the changes were made to the income trusts, those changes did not take effect for 4 yrs. Why did anyone sell, withdraw funds or whatever. Anyone who lost money is because the panicked, or had bad advise from brokers, investment bankers etc. People had 4 years to make other decisions and save money. Don’t blame Harper, blame your own greed. Has anyone complained when some union has invested funds in some venture, bought some company and lost a lot of money. Never hear about that. What has the ont teachers union just bought. Other than QP dion has been absent from tv. Newman had a discussion on what the deal with Que will mean, and 2 ministers were in Que today. Lots of comments in the g&m on the new ads. Some from Que thought they were very funny and honest. Poor dion, trying to break the door to the HofC down and then Chretain appears. Still lots of hard feeling over adscam. Lots of pro and con comments re would they vote Harper, but will not vote dion.

  11. Antenor:
Fair comment. But you gotta know if you venture on a site advocating X and you dispute it, you may be fair game for rebuttal. It IS a blog, after all. Why ELSE would you post if you weren’t looking for debate, or at the very least, a reaction?
At least on this site, visitors with opposing views are allowed their say, regardless of what it is. They might feel the heat in subsequent posts, but they can always swing back & get their licks in afterwards if they so choose.
Contrast this with the boneheads at babble, where opposing speech is shut down faster than you can say “you’re banned”.
Actually, I’m more surprised there was no rebuttal to the sneering post by Don at 10:45am
I mean, here’s somebody huffing about someone else’s mental capacity, when he has included (in the very same line, no less):
    1. Incorrect use of an apostrophe (“wonder’s” instead of “wonders”)
    2. Wrong reference to IQ (calling it “IQ number”)
    3. Incorrect word usage (using “equitable” instead of “equal”)
    4. A spelling mistake (“paticular”)
I’d also take a shot at splitting Donny’s infinitive “is roughly equitable”, but that’d really be nitpicking, and I’m all tuckered out.
    Ahhh… delicious irony.

  12. MHB, I’m all for rebuttal and intelligent discussion or debate, that’s where the hardcore Liberal backers have a very difficult time. What I’m against is the continued referrences to them as Bone-headed, morons, etc. I’m also against their insinuations of Conservative bloggers as red-necks, knuckle-draggers, etc. We don’t have to stoop to their level. I mean after all we’re dealing with a large segment of society that are at best functioning illiterates. That’s why so few of them involve themselves on Kate’s blog, they cannot withstand the barrage of facts, figures, taped sound bites and interviews that Kate’s readers bring to the arguments to substantiate our views.

  13. If Jonathan wants a site that lambasts Stephen Harper without compunction let him go to one but we certainly don’t have to turn this site into one where fairness and veracity don’t apply.
In the mean time we will continue to have a site which is open to the truth and uncorrupted.

  14. Antenor/Peter –
I’m in agreement with “fight ’em with facts”. Nothing (nothing) drives a left-winger more nutso than refuting their oft-inane theories or conspiracies with facts & data. That’s when the ad hominems usually start, or discrediting of the source of the info.
    It’s almost guaranteed.
That’s one reason I like to listen to Rush Limbaugh on my lunch hour. He always backs up his claims with data that’s verifiable. Yes, he’s arrogant, and possesses a king-sized ego, but he’s hard to knock when he throws out the facts.
Contrast this with some of the Air America conspiracy whack-job programming available (heh, or surf Rabble, if you’ve the stomach for it), and the difference is laughable.

  15. I have know a good few Liberals in my day who are honest and dedicated to public service. While none of these people were associated with the federal party, that does not make them any less Liberal.
I think that Jonathan should be hired as a motivational speaker for the CPC because he has caused the knuckle draggers in the CPC movement to actually research policy and good public sector management practices.
I have seen many governments come and go. The longer they stay, the more insular and corrupt they become. Power does corrupt, and the federal Liberal Party was in power too long and has been corrupted thoroughly. Like a naughty child, they need a long time out to learn the implications of naughty behaviour.
In the meantime, Stephen has to be reminded that he must listen to the wishes of people if he wants to establish a majority Government.

  16. Antenor – “I mean after all we’re dealing with a large segment of society that are at best functioning illiterates.”
For the younguns’ it’s a Natural result of the Trudeaupian socialist indoctrination programs that our public schools have been turned into. In fact it may take a rare kind of rebel to break out of that miasma.
For those over 50 there is no excuse. They are willing supporters of corruption and incompetence.
Blind allies of the socialist ideology who continue to exhort the greatness and deny the failure of that traitorous vision in spite of 4 decades of evidence to the contrary and the suffering of and damage to this nation that has resulted from that great mistake.
IMO – Liberal supporters of this ilk deserve no better than scorn.

  17. I am ready for debate…and if I am proven wrong, I’ll even offer an admision.
I just don’t need to be called a criminal, or corrupt, without any consideration put behind the accusation. I have nothing to do with dirty money, nor will I ever condone it – Liberal, Conservative, doesn’t matter.
The only point I am trying to make is that opportunism and hypocrisy can be levied at Harper at the flip flop in his opinions on judicial appointments and partisan influence.
Were the Libs guilty of flip flops? ABSOLUTELY. GST, Nafta, etc. That’s politics, one supposes.
Perspective means that you are willing to see fault within your own ranks just as you are ready to attack your opposition.
    I do both when necessary.

  18. Jonathan Ross: “Perspective means that you are willing to see fault within your own ranks just as you are ready to attack your opposition.”
Will you be submitting this as the new meaning of perspective?

  19. In regards to my IQ. It is higher than some people think, but you know the saying, it’s not what you know, it’s who you know. Who do I know, lots of very important people, 3 Judges on the Court of Queens Bench (was secretary for one) (school mates), Several very important lawyers, again school friends, Senator Joyce Fairburn, (friend since her 1st yr at UofA), Every one of my mps and mlas from years back to present, first name basis with PMSH, Monte Solberg, Rick Casson, (pictures to prove it, not photo ops)and Preston Manning, to name a few. Who have I met, 3 GGs, had tea at the GG’s residence several years ago, Premiers of 6 Provinces over the years. Who do I phone when I want information re a topic, usually a cabinet minister, fed or prov, stats canada, my mla or mp.
At one wine and cheese party I sat at the same table with Pam Barret (former AB ndp leader) Deb Gray,& Anne McClellan. Great conversation and debate, and we all walked out without any visible wounds. The above have been very helpful over the years in getting information, copies of Bills, or talking points. They are all just ordinary people who happened to be in the right place at the right time. Maybe I should mention that I have also travelled across Canada for meetings, conventions and workshops, and have received awards from National Organizations for my work.
My most disappointing moment was receiving a certificate from the PM on our 50th, and it was signed by Martin instead of Harper. It is very sad that my detractors just get their info from the cbc and believe it.

  20. Jonathon Ross, another self hating/self loathing lieberal. What a sad life it must be, going against everything you know to be right and chosing the wrong way every day of your life, just to be a lieberal, John Howard of Australia proves it year after year that people chose right when they have balls, people like you Jonathon, I could castrate with a toenail clipper.

  21. Jonathan, go visit some liberal blogs and read the comments. The re-runs of the leadership race are certainly having an effect, especially when you have liberals attacking liberals in their comments. Many say they did not support dion for his green stand. The word environment was seldom if ever talked about between delegates. He won because loyal Kennedy delegates followed their guy, and the rest cast ABI votes. They also feel that they could be decimated if we have an early election, aka Kim, because Harper is not a damaged PM, like martin was. After reading a lot of them I thought, you know there are some smart liberals out there, until they get to the voting booth. Think about that Jonathan, ordinary liberals attacking the liberal leadership, in our cities, in Canada, I am not making this up.

  22. I did not read the comments, just scooted down to the bottom to add this tidbit. The last supreme appointed had the impeccable qualifications of being irwin cotler’s wife’s best friend. Go figure.

  23. I agree with you Fred, The msm and Liberanos are shrieking about the Conservative Judges because they know that they, themselves, are thieves, liars, and traitors – they have done the crime and like most criminals they do not want to do the time. If they do not have bought and paid for Judges in the court house they will land in the jailhouse.
The bags under Marlene’s eyes are packed for a trip to her second country – or maybe she does not have an alternative and that is why she screeches with hysterical fear. No wonder French citizen Dion will not part with his home country citizenship!

  24. “Since Kate is interested in digging up old Hansard quotes, I am curious as to what she and her faithful readers have to say about these quotes from Stephen Harper:
    http://www.tdhstrategies.com/2007/02/stephen-harper-then-silence-now.html
(far too long to post all on this forum)
With respect for all of your collective passion for integrity and sticking to one’s word, I am curious about what kind of responses this will receive.”
Hmmm, Jonathan Ross. Would he be the Liberal idiot who has the blog called TDH Stradegies.
    Thought so!!
    Horny Toad

  25. aaaaand the lesson in all this?
    they ALL do it.
    shades of grey etc…..
we need term limits, recall mechanisms and a godam ELECTED senate. and judges for that matter maybe but definitely the senate.
and term limits ALL ACROSS THE BOARD.

  26. Kudos to Horny Toad for outing Jonathan Ross for who he is – another Liberal blogger who was deceitful and coward enough who wouldn’t identify himself but tried to give Kate’s readers the false image that he was a nonpartisan contributor to debate. No wonder Liberals have a bad bad name for deceit – they work hard at earning it.
This is an eye opener for those posters who let their guard down and couldn’t read between the lines.
In future be suspicious of any poster who would try and defend the previous corrupt Liberal government.
Jonathan represents the scum that everyone has to be wary of – can you say a wolf in sheep’s clothing.

  27. Lisa Corbella has a column in the Calgary Sun today listing Liberal Judges appointed in Alberta, by liberals, in the past few years. Anne McLellans friend, after donating over 1000.00 is there. Read her comment about a remark made at the Gomery Inquiry. Her comment re the g&m never running a front page story re partisanship in liberal appointments is priceless. Save all the names or the article, to take to all candidate meetings when the time comes and ask questions of liberal candidates.
I think this issue will also backfire on the liberals if we go into an election today.
Something is happening here today, there is a strange yellow thing in the sky and it is shinning. Must have something to do with climate change or global warming. Haven’t seen it in several days. Another thing we can do is phone dions office in parliament and ask him about these appointments. Then phone the senate. Flood the letters pages of all the newspapers. The wont get printed but at least they will get read. I called the cbc talkback line and just recited the names. If these guys wont do their job it is up to us.

  28. Watching the memorial for the 2 firefighters who lost their lives in Winnipeg, brought one to tears. And some ungrateful Bloc MP had the nerve to question a firemans ability to be on a committee to select judges etc. They are, in my mind, much more qualified than those the liberals had to make selections.
There are a lot of MPs there today, what will that do to the vote in the House today.

  29. mary T….You might want to check out Cherniak`s Blog….he is complaining about Harper trying to stack the deck. One blogger linked Corbella`s column….priceless!
I wonder why we never see this type of information from the G&M/Red Star/CBC etc.?

  30. You’re not the sharpest tool in the shed, now are you Peter. Or Horny Toad for that matter.
I identified my website in the fourth post of this thread.
R-E-A-D-I-N-G comprehension. Tough concept to grasp, obviously.

  31. Plus, my name links to my website.
I also stated in one of the earlier posts on the thread that:
“When my party needs to be criticized, I have no problem doing so out in the open – I have years of proof regarding that.”
Where is the image of a “non-partisan.”
Fervent conservativism obviously renders clear thought an impossibility. Once again, Peter and Horny Toad…you are idiots.

  32. Jonathan has another trait in common with Liberals and that is deceit He promised us he would leave us alone but he lied.
“I’m done. You can go back to your incessant insults and putdowns.”
I hazard a guess Jonathan is angry young man because he has no Liberal government to try and sell his questionable service to – he is not on the payroll- too bad.
Why is it Liberals are so hard to get rid of and why do we have more and more examples if you say “lying Liberals” you are being redundant.

  33. If Paplo’s bill passes today, and goes to the senate etc, and is passed, who decides when it gets Royal Assent. Does the 60 days start after the GG signs the bill, as I think it does or does it start today, as the msm is attempting to tell us. What happens if an election is called before being passed in the senate, does it die. Do the liberals really think the implementation of this bill will not cost money, or jobs, or drastic change in our lifestyles.
Global warming here today, we have gone from 20 below F to 6 above F, since 7.30a.m. Guess what, the sun is out in full force. Our chinook is on the way.
I hear Al Queda is trying to influence cdn politics and tax policy. Can we now accuse Holland and Dion of supporting Al Q, with their insistence Alberta’s oil be kept in the ground instead of exported to the USA. Did their orders for this come from OBL. Will they back off now for fear of being tied to OBL. Jonathan, what do you think of your leader taking orders from the man in the cave.

  34. PMSH will not be there for the vote tonight. There used to be a policy that is an mp was going to be absent for a vote, another opposition mp stayed away also, is that still in effect.
The Bloc is now also after Albertas oil, as is Al Queda. This bill will never receive royal accent, an election will be called first. Layton and Iggy (who stated there would be no economic downfall if kyoto is met) said cdns are tired of inaction on kyoto and will basically put this govt out of its misery (words to that effect) Bet they are wrong. 2000 jobs in the auto industry is just a start.

  35. Newman must read the blogs and so must JVD. Notice her calmed down hair. Neman asked considering the fact that so many politicians are showing up in negative images, is the Prime Minister missing the vote tonight because he does not want to show up on utube voting against it. My question is, all those voting in favor will also show up on tv and utube, so how will they react when it is proven their ideas are wrong and their rhetoric saying kyoto is great are blasted all over the net, years from now. I would hate to be their family years from now, being blamed for their idiot fathers/mothers and grandfathers/mothers. Will our grandchildren be able to sue their grandchildren.

  36. So jonathan which crook are you really? One of the senators? or maybe soomone who would never get elected as a judge? or just some scumbag liberano looking to push buttons?
Your partisen quacking makes you look like the fool you are.
someone that shold be at the end of a rope THATS FOR SUE!!!
