Now For The Most Important Vote Of The Day (Updated with results)

Dinning vs Morton vs Stelmach.
What liberal bias? For sheer entertainment value, check out this this ridiculous Globe and Mail piece. I’ve taken the liberty of adding the emphasis the headline writers intended.
dinningscare.jpg
And they don’t get to blame the headline writers for this bit of sneer;

The religious right in this rural area southeast of Calgary mobilized behind Ted Morton, a social conservative who preaches so-called family values.

I look forward to future articles by Walton and Harding to apply “so-called” to the words “Canadian values”.
The G&M feedback link is here.

Results are being posted here, at Larry Johnsrude’s Edmonton Journal blog. (But not very quickly. I think he’s partying with the Stelmach people. Why are journos so bad at blogging?)
You can also follow reports at 660news.com, though there’s no continuous coverage that I’m aware of anywhere.
Or, just read the comments – it seems our readers are bringing them in faster than either of the sources listed above. (I’m updating as they come in)

Results so far in the Alberta Progressive Conservative leadership race with 79/83 polls reporting:
48,543 Jim Dinning
44,046 Ed Stelmach
36,071 Ted Morton
(CTV Calgary hasn’t bothered updating since 11:00 pm mtn)

B. Hoax Aware comments “Amazing. The MSM has abandoned leadership election results reporting to sda !!”
A blogging note – you sure can tell when it’s a big political day around here… just past midnight (Sk time) and there have been 662 visits in the last hour.
And just for fun another poll going horribly wrong…
11:43 pm in Alberta …based on current tallies, and the likely results of the Morton second choice ballots, the SDA Decision Desk is projecting Ed Stelmach the new Premier of Alberta… Now, I’m off to bed, in anticipation of preparing crow for breakfast. Continuing coverage in the comments, presumably.

Morning update
Last Update: 1:25 AM– Sunday December 03
Results from the Alberta Progressive Conservative leadership race with 83/83 polls reporting:
Ed Stelmach 51, 764
Jim Dinning 51, 282
Ted Morton 41, 243
I haven’t read them all, but the comments look to be a hoot.
Ural – “Let me be the first to congratulate the SDA Decision Desk on projecting the winner correctly a full hour and 20 minutes before MSM.”
Cal2 – “sure glad our Liberal Media CBCpravda kept up with the Alberta election – 13 hours between postings on the Pravda website 630 yesterday to 730 this morning . Bit of a contrast compared to the all day luvfest they had commercial free for their liberals.”
MaryT – “Everyone is asking what happened to Dinnings campaign, but no one has said, it became public that he donated mega bucks to Paul Martins campaign last January. That info shocked a lot of people. Be fun to read the Calgary Sun tomorrow. Maybe now the city elites will stop knocking rural Alberta. Ed took several polls in Calgary, explain that.”
Tomax7 – “…pretty sad when Albertan’s gotta get historic news from a Sask blogsite eh?”

  1. Just talked to a buddy on the floor. There are still a couple of ridings to count, but the gap between Morton & Ed is too big. Dinning still only has around 40% of the vote, so Kate’s prediction is probably right.
    *sigh*
On the bright side, I still live in the best damn province in the country, and while some may b*tch about “2-minute members” the reality is, everyone with $5 and an opinion got to vote. It doesn’t get much more democratic than that.

  2. I agree that a 3 to 6 month period at least should be required. But if it had in this case, Dinning would have won going away.

  3. HMMM. I had forgotten about Preston. Maybe him and Ted should get together and start a real alternative party here in Alberta. I think Preston is one of the most thoughtful, well spoken and intelligent men that has ever been involved in Canadian politics. I think Canada would have been a lot better off were it not for the small minded people that painted him as a redneck biggot from the west. Not unlike the way they painted Morton.

  4. Dam; coverage just quit, and it looked like Ed might be in 1st place. Everyone is asking what happened to Dinnings campaign, but no one has said, it became public that he donated mega bucks to Paul Martins campaign last January. That info shocked a lot of people. Be fun to read the Calgary Sun tomorrow. Maybe now the city elites will stop knocking rural Alberta. Ed took several polls in Calgary, explain that. At least we have a conservative for Premier, not a liberalwannabe.
But, we do have a citizen of France as liberal leader. Will Dion give up his French citizenship aka the GG.

  5. One voter on CTV Newsnet mentioned it’s the ONLY opportunity to ever pick Premier. Usually we just get to pick our MLA.

  6. Gord: “And preston’s dad was the greatest premier ever.”
…trying to remember, but why did the SC’s get the boot back in the 70’s?
    And Mr. Aberhart?

  7. Maybe they should have been charging 100 bucks a membership. That would have kept the liberal riff raff out of things.
I agree with Candace. No matter the outcome, Albertans are some of the nicest, most honest, hard working people you’ll ever meet across this country. (well newfies are pretty good folks too). This is still the best province in the country and we can only hope that it continues to get better rather than degrade into a socialist morass.

  8. Gord, just did a quick read on Mr. Manning. Guess he resigned in ’68 so it was after him the SC fell apart.
Effective December 12, 1968, Ernest C. Manning resigned as Premier, and later the same month, he resigned his seat in the Alberta Legislature. In 1970, he was appointed to the Senate of Canada where he served until 1983
The Honourable Ernest C. Manning has the distinction of having served as Premier of Alberta longer than any other person. As well, when he was appointed Premier, he was the second youngest First Minister in the history of Commonwealth parliaments

  9. “…trying to remember, but why did the SC’s get the boot back in the 70’s? ”
They elected a leader not unlike Stelmach who put a bunch of underachievers in cabinet and lost all of the young urban talent to the PCs.

  10. Its been a long evening. Morton has just conceded to Stelmach.
I believe that the result is the right thing for the province of Alberta right now. We will all be watching to see just how things mesh together, but at least there will not likely be a provincial election until 18-24 months. Many people will be thinking about a lot of things in the days/weeks ahead and probably many re-evaluations will be made about a lot of things as well.
To those who think that Stelmach is not far enough to the right, I think he is and so do a lot of other people. To those who are in the Dinning camp or who are in the Morton camp, I hope that the talk of new parties does not come to fruition – at least until we know what happens on the federal scene. It strikes me that we have enough parties right now and that people have to align themselves with the one they are most comfortable with.
I’m very happy that Dinning/Rod Love et al no longer have the political hammer but time will tell what this really means.

  11. This is what is being reported on the renewing the one party state blog spot:
Morton’s second choices are going 60% to Stelmach, 30% no second choice, and only 10% to Dinning.
    Dinning: 46,270 + (32,630 * 0.1) = 49,533
    Stemach: 40,093 + (32,630 * 0.6) = 59,671
    Stelmach wins.
I’m a big Morton fan, but I must say, I’m very much enjoying how bitter the Dinnites in this thread are. Looks like the gravy train escaped…

  12. …it will be interesting to see if all the skelton’s in the closet come out.
If Stemach is spineless and has a bunch of “under achievers”, it will be business as usual in Alberta pork barrelling.

  13. calgary clipper:
I hope you are right and I am wrong. Stelmach needs to start talking harder right than he has otherwise the Alliance will take up the vacuum.

  14. I’m still holding out hope that Jim Dinning takes the crown, but even I can see the writing on the wall.
    Premier Ed Stelmach…meh

  15. Gord, I hope you are right also, as from what I’ve seen in the Alliance, they are a fragmented group.
    Even their website is stale.
Mind you I shouldn’t talk, Marilyn Burns site is stale, should be updated soon as just emailed her.

  16. Let me be the first to congratulate the SDA Decision Desk on projecting the winner correctly a full hour and 20 minutes before MSM.

  17. I’ll second. Did you check out the other blog Ural? Sorry for confussion. Lots going on right now.

  18. Ed is not much of a speaker. Watching his acceptance speech is not giving me any more confidence in the man. Seems timid… Hope I am wrong here….

  19. I didn’t double post – really folks … got an error message from Moveable Type … went to never never land.

  20. tomax7
From what I just heard, I’ll be surprised if Ed stands up to anyone. Time will tell, but I am not very hopeful at this moment.

  21. Once again it comes down to people being afraid of something different, even if staying the course isn;t necessarily the best plan. Hmmmm…that sounds familiar.
I’m afraid we need a real change in how Canadians think about and what we expect from our governments that are supposed to be working for us, the taxpayer.

  22. Gord: “They (the SC in the ’70s) elected a leader not unlike Stelmach who put a bunch of underachievers in cabinet and lost all of the young urban talent to the PCs.”
…hmm wonder if that will be prophetic in the ’07’s.
Hopefully the talent will go to Alberta Alliance or some group that can stand up for what is right.

  23. Some people are talking about 2 min. Tories. I saw an interview on CTV Newsnet of 2 X 2 min. Liberals who were out to get Morton.
