Dinning vs Morton vs Stelmach.
What liberal bias? For sheer entertainment value, check out this this ridiculous Globe and Mail piece. I’ve taken the liberty of adding the emphasis the headline writers intended.

And they don’t get to blame the headline writers for this bit of sneer;
The religious right in this rural area southeast of Calgary mobilized behind Ted Morton, a social conservative who preaches so-called family values.
I look forward to future articles by Walton and Harding to apply “so-called” to the words “Canadian values”.
The G&M feedback link is here.
Results are being posted here, at Larry Johnsrude’s Edmonton Journal blog. (But not very quickly. I think he’s partying with the Stelmach people. Why are journos so bad at blogging?)
You can also follow reports at 660news.com, though there’s no continuous coverage that I’m aware of anywhere.
Or, just read the comments – it seems our readers are bringing them in faster than either of the sources listed above. (I’m updating as they come in)
Results so far in the Alberta Progressive Conservative leadership race with 79/83 polls reporting:
48,543 Jim Dinning
44,046 Ed Stelmach
36,071 Ted Morton
(CTV Calgary hasn’t bothered updating since 11:00 pm mtn)
B. Hoax Aware comments “Amazing. The MSM has abandoned leadership election results reporting to sda !!”
A blogging note – you sure can tell when it’s a big political day around here… just past midnight (Sk time) and there have been 662 visits in the last hour.
And just for fun another poll going horribly wrong…
11:43 pm in Alberta …based on current tallies, and the likely results of the Morton second choice ballots, the SDA Decision Desk is projecting Ed Stelmach the new Premier of Alberta… Now, I’m off to bed, in anticipation of preparing crow for breakfast. Continuing coverage in the comments, presumably.
Morning update
Last Update: 1:25 AM– Sunday December 03
Results from the Alberta Progressive Conservative leadership race with 83/83 polls reporting:
Ed Stelmach 51, 764
Jim Dinning 51, 282
Ted Morton 41, 243
I haven’t read them all, but the comments look to be a hoot.
Ural – “Let me be the first to congratulate the SDA Decision Desk on projecting the winner correctly a full hour and 20 minutes before MSM.”
Cal2 – “sure glad our Liberal Media CBCpravda kept up with the Alberta election – 13 hours between postings on the Pravda website 630 yesterday to 730 this morning . Bit of a contrast compared to the all day luvfest they had commercial free for their liberals.”
MaryT – “Everyone is asking what happened to Dinnings campaign, but no one has said, it became public that he donated mega bucks to Paul Martins campaign last January. That info shocked a lot of people. Be fun to read the Calgary Sun tomorrow. Maybe now the city elites will stop knocking rural Alberta. Ed took several polls in Calgary, explain that.”
Tomax7 – “…pretty sad when Albertan’s gotta get historic news from a Sask blogsite eh?”

Well, I’m convinced. In all elections in general there need to be limits put on who is allowed to vote. There are too many klingons (people who live off the avails of others) that are allowed to vote. This needs to change.
“I am not really affiliated with any party,” said Babette Blindert, who cast a ballot Saturday even though she normally votes Liberal or NDP. “I am concerned Ted Morton will get in.
“So I voted for Jim Dinning first and Ed Stelmach second.”
“….. does Kate declare Stelmach first”. Sounds like Kate has taken over the decision desk from Pete !! Nice.
I should do that, just for fun… The SDA Election Desk is projecting Ed Stelmach the new Premier of Alberta…
Syncro – Alberta Alliance is a fragmented party. They couldn’t even get more than 400 to their big candidate meeting with Paul H and Marilyn B…
Bubbles I believe the rules are supposed to be changed on this buying memberships up to the last minute, but as it stands this time you could buy memberships where you voted. We know now that Morton won’t win so we have to hope he stays in third place for his second choices to go to Stelmach as Ural noted.
Noise from the Right – a Morton worker – agrees with your projection
Did anyone else notice that it’s gone down to 73 of 83 polls reporting now?
Bubbles,
Could be that they took out the advance polls.
I would really be interested in finding out where Ed Stelmachs second choices went??
I noticed that as well Bubbles….
…and the winner is:
The really goofy part is Global Edmonton has flashed the leader totals twice now and , I believe, have Morton and Stelmach’s #’s reversed.
They just corrected that Cheri……lmao
MikeP:
Stelmach’s #2s would have largely gone to Morton.
Larry is saying:
With 73 polls reporting:
Dinning — 44,562
Stelmach — 36,688
Morton — 31,763
Ok … big disconnect going on.
ural, look at the time stamp…11:30pm.
Jim – 48,543
Ed – 44,046
Ted – 36,071
New #. I should think Ed will have it with Ted’s 2nd’s. ABD.
660News:
Dinnging 48550
Ed: 44046
Ted: 360071
Ed stelmach has just polled ahead of Dinning with 36 to 35 % of the vote, 79 out of 83 polls.
I’m dissapointed but not as dissapointed as Dinning. Yahoo!
I think Ed was a mistake. Dinning can go play with his Libe buddies. Expect more of the same liberal policies out of this government. I think there is room for another party in this province.
MikeP. Over 113000 votes cast at last count. Dinning needs 56501 to win. Mortons vote will go over 75% to Ed. You do the math. 73 out of 85 ridings in. Who hasn’t reported yet. The only way Jim can win is if Ted comes second. Eds 2nd will split both ways. Dave Rutherford just said what I did re giving Ted an important job, and he says Ed has a difficult time ahead to unite the south, calgary and the north. Every poll reporting means more votes are needed to get 50%+1. At least all Albertans had an opportunity to elect the premier. Too bad we can’t all vote for a Prime Minister the same way.
I honestly think Dinning might have been a better choice than Stelmach. Stelmach just seems to be so unqualified and he’s not very far to the right of Dinning.
Larry has a good point:
…But Morton’s people can vote however they want. Who says it has to involve logic?
And who says they’re going to vote at all? They didn’t have to. There was no requirement in the preferrential balloting system that voters had to pick a second choice. Their ballots wouldn’t be spoiled if they didn’t.
This is what has the Stelmach people worried. If Morton’s supporters didn’t mark second choices — and a lot of them may not have, considering the attitude was it was their guy or no guy — Dinning will win by default.
That could happen.
tomax7,
“The SDA Election Desk is projecting Ed Stelmach the new Premier of Alberta…”
tomax7:
It could… but it won’t. Stelmach is just too close to Dinning.
Tomax: I think your assumption that Morton supporters were “Morton or no one” is quite unfounded. Being strongly supportive of your candidate does not mean you’ll not vote for anyone else as a second choice. I think the dislike for Dinning would be a strong motivating force to vote Stelmach #2.
I’m at least 1 Morton supporter who did mark a #2. It wasn’t Dinning. I’ll let you figure out who it was. :p
…does Alberta have a Rhino party?
Bubbles:
My number 2 neutralizes your #2.
The more I think about it I am actually starting to think it may be best to have Dinning come out on top. That should disgust enough people that it would open a pathway for a second true conservative party in Alberta. I just don’t see Stelmach being good for Alberta. Dinning is worse, but at least it will piss people off enough to want change instead of the status quo.
The Morton supporters I spoke to all voted Ed as #2. I would predict AT LEAST 80% will go to Ed. Probably another 10% (at least) didn’t pick a #2.
It’s funny how the Dinning crowd predicted a “fractured party” if Morton won. I’d say it’s going to be fractured no matter HOW you cut it. Ed will have about 30-60 days to prove he’s not a Dinning wannabe before I start sussing out other parties to support.
Well, the Federal Liberal elite and the Alberta PC elite both took a bit of a kicking in the last 24 hours.
133,497 votes counted
Jim – 49,440
Ed- 45,891
Ted – 38,167
I sure hope they have already counted the #2 choices or we won’t know the result until 10:00 am.
Gord,
I think maryT said that they did.
Only 133,497 voters? Is that all the PC’s types in Alberta?
The minority dictating the future to the majority.
How Canadian.
Tim’s doing a good job of reporting, but this is from QR77’s site.
Last Update: 12:27 AM – Sunday December 03

Tomax7…that is just the amount that got off thier butts to go and vote. Which is not bad actually for a leadership race. Remember this is not an election.
Candace is bang on the money. Unfortunately Stelmach has promised the moon and the stars to every meatball town councillor and county reeve to get the support he did. Pork from one end of the province to the other.
If he’s a guy who can’t say no – and that’s been his MO thusfar – a lot of people are going to be disappointed one way or the other.
What the heck, Global signed off?
tomax7. It was a leadership vote. Not a general election. Frankly, if you ask me there are too many people allowed to vote in those elections also. Do you think it’s any fairer for the majority to be stealing from a minority?
Thanks Tim. You are right, but still non-election or not, that’s not even a town in numbers.
tomax7,
What’s 4600 for the fed liberals then?
I can’t help but wonder if Global would sign off in the middle of a Liberal learership race?…..NOT!
You know a lot of people point out that the LP leadership race didn’t have any of the A-list candidates running.
Well, the AB PC leadership was missing one A-lister, one who might have had a very triumphant night tonight:
Preston Manning
It saddens me to think about the what if.
Johnboy, you’re right on the last minute sign ups. Agreed, should be at least 6 mos a member to be a voting one.
AS rumours go, a lot of Libs signed up to vote for Mr. Dinning.
Then again, just rumours.
As for “town numbers” I hope everyone knows I was speaking figuratively as the number who voted is more than say Red Deer or Lethbridge.
…yeah, Preston Manning. Sad eh.
Canada’s greatest Prime Minister it never had.
Preston could play a big part in the next Gen. Election if he gets his new Party up & running.
