Now For The Most Important Vote Of The Day (Updated with results)

Dinning vs Morton vs Stelmach.
What liberal bias? For sheer entertainment value, check out this this ridiculous Globe and Mail piece. I’ve taken the liberty of adding the emphasis the headline writers intended.
dinningscare.jpg
And they don’t get to blame the headline writers for this bit of sneer;

The religious right in this rural area southeast of Calgary mobilized behind Ted Morton, a social conservative who preaches so-called family values.

I look forward to future articles by Walton and Harding to apply “so-called” to the words “Canadian values”.
The G&M feedback link is here.

Results are being posted here, at Larry Johnsrude’s Edmonton Journal blog. (But not very quickly. I think he’s partying with the Stelmach people. Why are journos so bad at blogging?)
You can also follow reports at 660news.com, though there’s no continuous coverage that I’m aware of anywhere.
Or, just read the comments – it seems our readers are bringing them in faster than either of the sources listed above. (I’m updating as they come in)

Results so far in the Alberta Progressive Conservative leadership race with 79/83 polls reporting:
48,543 Jim Dinning
44,046 Ed Stelmach
36,071 Ted Morton
(CTV Calgary hasn’t bothered updating since 11:00 pm mtn)

B. Hoax Aware comments “Amazing. The MSM has abandoned leadership election results reporting to sda !!”
A blogging note – you sure can tell when it’s a big political day around here… just past midnight (Sk time) and there have been 662 visits in the last hour.
And just for fun another poll going horribly wrong…
11:43 pm in Alberta …based on current tallies, and the likely results of the Morton second choice ballots, the SDA Decision Desk is projecting Ed Stelmach the new Premier of Alberta… Now, I’m off to bed, in anticipation of preparing crow for breakfast. Continuing coverage in the comments, presumably.

Morning update
Last Update: 1:25 AM– Sunday December 03
Results from the Alberta Progressive Conservative leadership race with 83/83 polls reporting:
Ed Stelmach 51, 764
Jim Dinning 51, 282
Ted Morton 41, 243
I haven’t read them all, but the comments look to be a hoot.
Ural – “Let me be the first to congratulate the SDA Decision Desk on projecting the winner correctly a full hour and 20 minutes before MSM.”
Cal2 – “sure glad our Liberal Media CBCpravda kept up with the Alberta election – 13 hours between postings on the Pravda website 630 yesterday to 730 this morning . Bit of a contrast compared to the all day luvfest they had commercial free for their liberals.”
MaryT – “Everyone is asking what happened to Dinnings campaign, but no one has said, it became public that he donated mega bucks to Paul Martins campaign last January. That info shocked a lot of people. Be fun to read the Calgary Sun tomorrow. Maybe now the city elites will stop knocking rural Alberta. Ed took several polls in Calgary, explain that.”
Tomax7 – “…pretty sad when Albertan’s gotta get historic news from a Sask blogsite eh?”

  1. Bob…a bit of a dumb blanket statement eh?
Let’s see for one, Lucia Corebella at the Calgary Sun, doesn’t.
Another is Mindelle Jacobs at Edmonton Sun.
We could throw Kate in, but that’s her call.
So, not being a bit steriotypical femalephobic are you?

  2. Bob, that’s just fine.
They’ll have their designer 1.3 children at age 48. Their lot will die out.
Meanwhile, the so-called family values crowd will be sending 3 or 4 children to the polls.
Unless, of course, the so-called family values come from Mecca.
Then the designer 1.3 children will be wearing a burka and sporting the latest in clitorectomy. But that’s so multi-cult Montreal chic, isn’t it?!
    (spit)

  3. -27C and I’m heading out to vote.
~ proving that some Cdns cannot start a conversation without mentioning the weather.
But “they” managed to confuse me.
    ~ whoever “they” is.
If Dinning or Morton can’t pull off 50% +1,
then the second choice is counted. T or F (?)
If the above is true, and the voter wants to elect Dinning or Morton, he/she would vote
Stelmach as first choice and one of the others
as second choice; hoping Stelmach doesn’t get
    50% +1.
    That’s wierd even for AB.
Another rumor: if neither of the two front runners gets 50% +1, the votes for number three are split and added to one and two. T or F (?)
    That’s even sicker.
Obviously, more research is in order before I go mark my two Xs.

  4. The Edmonton Journal is similar in their biased reporting this morning. Never thought I’d see a conservative so attacked in Alberta but I guess it just shows me who owns the papers here.
Plus, in phone calls to get out the vote, Dinning’s recording is telling people to vote for ‘Albertan Jim’ instead of ‘American Ted’.
The parallels between Dinning and Martin just keep growing.
    See noisefromtheright.blogspot.com for the details.

  5. I just hope Albertans have the courage to vote for real change! What these people don’t realize is, when they go with the scare tactics, it just makes our resolve that much stronger.
Now’s our chance to make a real difference in this country.

  6. I’ve done gone and voted, you can put a “1” beside your first choice and have the OPTION of putting a “2” beside your second choice, I didn’t see much strategy I could apply, I just put down a 1 and hope enough Stelmachers put a 2 beside my choice for leader on their ballot.

  7. If nobody gets over 50% on the first count, the number three guy drops out and HIS ballots are scanned for second choice votes, which are allocated to their respective candidates. If you want Morton to win, you mark him as your first choice, if you want Dinning to lose, you mark Stelmach as your second choice. If you want Dinning to win, there is a special ballot for you available next week, please wait for it to arrive in the mail before voting:)
    Dinning = Getty
    Stelmach = Strom
    Morton = Manning
    Go Ted Go!

  8. There is an eternal truth here. Never base an decision on what the Grope and Flail reports about Western Canada.
If they hate Morton, the obvious way to vote is for MORTON.
Since I am from BC I will not have the satisfaction of voting for your next leader. But I do believe that if Morton succeeds the conversation about Canada in the future will get more interesting and will shift focus away from the rotten and dying east.

  9. tomax says: “Bob…a bit of a dumb blanket statement eh?”
Yeah, I suppose so. I think we need more generalizing and stereotyping in Canada, though. Stereotyping is integral to the scientific method.
“Let’s see for one, Lucia Corebella at the Calgary Sun, doesn’t.”
    Licia is cool.
“Another is Mindelle Jacobs at Edmonton Sun.”
I’ve actually emailed Mindelle Jacobs over one of her man-hating columns. She’s written at least one column about how men are “worse” than women (her exact term), based on some bogus stats.
Whether it is 100% or 90% or 80% it is important to note the trend that Canadian female journalists are largely hostile toward men, Christians, and white people.

  10. Okay, I think i got it.
“(v) If no candidate obtains more than half the total valid ballots as first choice, the candidate who receives the lowest number of first choice votes shall be eliminated. The second choices of those who voted for the eliminated candidate shall be transferred to the other two candidates and counted in order to determine the winner.”

  11. We keep hearing from federal Liberals — such as Ken Dryden last night — and from their media proxies that conservatives aren’t real Canadians. Now we’re getting that same arrogant slur from the “Morton is scary” crowd.
John Kerry-clone Jim Dinning personally donated $25,000 to Paul Martin’s leadership bid; his campaign workers have been phoning Alberta Liberal Party members in the last week and asking them to buy a PC membership and vote in order to stop the conservative — Ted Morton.
Apparently our prairie pioneers who helped build this country were hoping that in the end Canada would be ruled by a bunch of smug GTA-ers, or ruled provincially by some smug, used-car-salesman backroom boy connected to the same.
Wrt the G&M, Ted Morton doesn’t talk about god in any of his speeches. He’s made perfectly clear — so of course, it’s not covered by the media — that he doesn’t give a rat’s ass about people’s sexual preferences. His concern is to ensure free speech, freedom of religion, and the right of parents to have some say in what their children are taught in school. What an extremist, eh?
In light of NDP/Liberal supporters organizing and buying PC memberships to stop conservatism in Alberta, it’s important that every Alberta Conservative make a point of voting for Morton today. You can buy your membership at the polling station. (You’ll be in a lineup with Liberals and NDPers). Bring picture ID and a few utility bills, and/or a property tax assessment with your address on it. Just make sure you vote.

  12. Dinnings ads on radio or other media, are just like the scary Harper ones we are so familiar with from last election by the liberals.
Only the target this round is Ted Morton.
He is a liberal or has been in such close proximity to them. He has adopted there stratagems, with its own oily contempt for the electorate.
The shrillness of the last few days, if not the panic by the elite, academia, journalists, have convinced me like nothing else, he must be the good guy in all this.
Jim Dinning is as liberal as they come. He is status quo all the way. Indeed boasts of it. That he gave money to his good buddy Paul Martin, say’s it all. This is an opportunist in bed with the usual cloaked monopolists & political ghouls. Looking for the big score for themselves along with there fellow rascals in mischief.
Nothing would change under this regime. It will if where lucky, be another Getty disaster. In this case complete capitulation to Eastern interests to our determent. An utter sell out.
Yester years man, with the sixties still playing the same political tune in his brain.

  13. …true about mindelle jacobs. Yeah also on licia.
Point being, the glob and pale is a biased paper, whether it is a male or female writer doing it.

  14. Sorry, Kate, with the “pop-up” comment system you have, I thought I was posting this under your open thread because I had more than one window open.
Nonetheless, watch the video. It’s a good one.

  15. Ah, and I see now that I scroll up after clicking on the comment link, that it’s not a pop-up comment system at all, rather a standard embedded comment form on a permalinked archive page with an “a name” #comments link, which is why I didn’t see your post.
    Apologies.

  16. Would like to wish all you Albertan’s best of luck with your (more important) election!I lived in Okotoks, and Calgary for 5 yrs,and can tell you,I miss your beautiful province..have missed the glorious view of the sun shining on the mountains to the west, coming out of the valley in Okotoks,to go to work in Calgary. Now living in the pitiful NDP state of Man.,I miss more than the “view”out there! Both my boys ret’d to Alta (Lloyd/Kitscoty)and worked in the rig bus.,and were welcomed with open arms,so thanks Alberta! One son,has since ret’d to Man,as he is now with the RCMP,and he also misses your great prov.Hubby and I are just waiting for retirement, and we too are heading west,as can’t take much more of this prov! So,all you Albertans make sure you vote, and vote often!Keep Alberta in good hands for the influx of disgruntled easteners!

  17. Dipshit Dinning may have just shot himself in the foot big time. His telephone ad asking people to vote for Jim the “Albertan” not Morton the “American” are as liberal as they get. The one thing Dipshit Dinning forgot however is Calgary is home to some 60,000 Americans that work here on a full time basis and they, like his Lib’s and Dippers can buy conservative memberships as well.

  18. I really don’t understand the logic behind all of the left leaning gruops in Alberta promoting Jim Dinning. If he is more favorable to them as provincial Premier than Ted Morton, dosen’t that mean it will be more difficult for them to have Kevin Taft and the Liberals win the Province in the next Provincial election? You would think they woud much rather see someone further from their spectrum win. Much like Harper VS Rae from the Concervative angle.

  19. “The most important vote of the day”
True. Who will be the next Alberta premier is more critical than the next Liberal boss.
The ground is shifting, and we’re headed for a more decentralized federation. Good thing, IMHO.

  20. “so-called family values”
Language continues to be bastardized by the left. To them, adding “so-called” to “family values” is perfectly legitimate. Their alternative definition of family values is much different from what “family values” are well understood to be.
-…if names are not correct, language will not be in accordance with the truth of things –Confucius
In dictatorships the word muerto is quite often translated into “absent”.

  21. Wait, Kate, I just went back to the main page. Your description immediately before the link to this page says “An open thread”.
You should be more clear. If you link to something called “open thread”, don’t be surprised if that’s where someone places a link to content they think others may (and would in this case) find interesting.

  22. Then I apologize for the confusion. The “open thread” is an invitation for readers to “chat” which is not generally encouraged here. As it’s a developing post, the reader comments serve as a “live blogging” excercise of sorts.
I still expect readers to stay on topic. You can leave unrelated tips in the most recent Reader Tips post. I’ll be putting another up tomorrow.

  23. Thanks, Kate, that’s fine. As far as the convention goes, I’m refraining from commenting (mostly) because I really have no idea what will happen.
Jason Cherniak, Warren Kinsella, and Andrew Coyne think they know and they all seem on the same page: Stéphane Dion.
I’m not a huge fan as he’s pretty milquetoast generally and not a defender of Israel specifically (unlike every other major Liberal candidate, he refused to issue a clear statement during the recent war with Lebanon), but then, it’s their leader, not mine.
They really have slim pickings: Failed socialist leader even the unions turned against, well-heeled foreign-living academic who can’t keep his foot from his mouth, young promising Gerard Kennedy, with nowhere near enough life experience, über-liberal Ken Dryden who’s astonished and offended (and offensive when describing how) Conservatives are not liberals, ethically challenged freedom-of-Internet-speach freak Joe Volpé, and Martha Hall Findley, smart long-range strategist, but too young with no profile (until now!), and Mr. Milquetoast.
So Stéphane Dion it is, maybe.

  24. Good God, I can’t read. Now I owe you an apology again.
On Ted Morton, I have lots to say, with few words.
    Go, dude. Great choice.
I’d love to stick it to the Alberta conservative establishment “man”!

  25. I can’t believe the arrogance of the liberal party and the liberal media to think that we would care to see this stupid convention live on every single channel all day long. When the Conservatives had their convention I don’t remember even hearing about it much until it was over. They have this thing running on every channel like it’s the superbowl or something. Where’s my saturday afternoon Simpsons?

  26. interesting that none of the MSM has noticed that being Premier of the “most have” province is a much more powerful position than being elected to the replacement “leader of the opposition”
both CBCpravda and CTV(tass) use the Alberta election as filler. the Alberta election is also democratic with one vote per member not the archaic delegate method the other folks are using. Peter Pansbridge ( the head of fantasy jounrnalism) has a grin on his face like they are electing the next liberal government. After all his report on the last election – well the two parties are even – the Liberals were shut out of Alberta while the Conservatives were shut out of PEI. right , -any one Alberta riding is larger than all four PEI ridings put together in this cobbled together pink bit at the top of the mercator projection.

  27. Gerrard Kennedy had the best observation in saying the Liberals must build in the west (read Alberta) because that’s where the economy is and therefore power.
I hope Albertans pick the right premier to combat thieving Liberals. And it seems the newly crowned king of thieves will be Dion.
Good luck winning the west with another socialist frenchman who can’t speak English. Heh.
Chretien spoke with the same pickled bluster, insults and lies. But of course the CTV is gushing about him. “The old lion is still roaring” says Craig Oliver.”Warmth and humanity,” says another shill.
    I need a shower.

  28. The Globe and Mail and CTV are becoming more and more brazenly, openly leftist, anticonservative and Christianophobic.
I would love to see the look on their faces in the future when they see the figures regarding their audience numbers and bottom line.
Let them keep it up. The emerging new medium which doesn’t depend on vast financial resources is here and growing in audience and influence. And quality.
The CTV/G&M looks like it’s trying to out-moonbat the CBC, competing for the leftwing audience. Well, they can do that if they want, but then they cannot continue claiming to be impartial, fair, balanced and comprehensive.
And they give everyone else the right to do a spin of their own, which will carry every bit as much legitimacy as theirs.

  29. Bob wrote:

Never commented here before but as a female journalist I had to point out that man-hating/Christian-hating/white-people hating is not true of ALL of us! (I don’t cover politics though, so perhaps these irrational leftist viewpoints are more prevalent in those journalists who choose politics as their beat)
As for the 1.3 kids at age 48 – this really irks me. I and the vast majority of my female journalist friends would LOVE to marry and have kids now (we are in our late 20s/early 30s). But living in Toronto where the men are in general very feminized, self-centred and not interested in taking on the responsibilities of a family…this is next to impossible!
So yeah, I am all for family values and would love to have 3 or 4 kids… I just have not managed to find a MAN who wants to do that!
Kate, I’m sorry if this was off-topic, it just annoys me to be categorized that way when this situation has been created as much by liberal-thinking MEN as women.

  30. Something just occured to me here. Who is paying for this liberal covention coverage? It’s been running all day on every network here since I woke up this morning, all commercial free. It seems like a full day infomercial for the lieberal party so they can bash Harper and promoted themselves. I hope they aren’t getting all this publicity for free.

  31. I lost my PC membership card and was turned away at the polling station this afternoon. I thought they would have a list of eligable voters and my ID would be sufficient but no. I wasn’t buying a new membership so I didn’t get to vote…If Morton loses by a vote I’ll be pi$$ed.

  32. I realize that cal2 but this has been on CTV and Global all day commercial free too. These are private for profit networks so there has to be money coming from somewhere.

  33. Just got back from the polling station for Calgary Elbow — Ralph’s riding. The turnout was very light. It may help Ted because I’m sure the rural polls will be busy.

  34. “I realize that cal2 but this has been on CTV and Global all day commercial free too. These are private for profit networks so there has to be money coming from somewhere.”
The people who buy ad airtime on TV don’t normally know exactly WHEN their ads will air, so CTV and the like are still getting their normal revenue, but now they’re allowed to have a love-in for the LIEberals as the cherry on top.

  35. But there have been no commercials all day so they will have to air about 5 hours worth of nothing but commercials after this is over if that’s true

  36. Dr D, now that a Liberal leader has been decided, the Liberals in Alberta will be trooping out to vote for Dinning.

  37. Dion?!
“…Dion, in fourth place after the first round of voting, revived to beat Ignatieff on the fourth and final ballot at a Montreal leadership convention. He won by 2,521 votes to 2,084…”

  38. how they do it
    3w.cbc.ca/canada/story/2006/09/29/delegates-selection.html
    how a democracy does it.
    3w.cbc.ca/canada/calgary/story/2006/12/01/leadership-vote.html
the MSM ,especially CBCpravda who regard themselves as political experts in every regard, has never ever mentioned this.

  39. Exit polls show Morton a strong second. Our poll was very busy, surpassed last weeks numbers by 2.00 p.m. It will be Stelmachs 2nds that will decide the winner. Maybe libs will flock to the polls, but so will conservatives who want a conservative leader, not a liberal in conservative clothing. Why would liberals want Dinning if he could defeat Taft, unless they think we wouldn’t vote for Dinning. We wont vote Taft either. Alliance, will gain much popularity, as they come seconde in many ridings. Wasn’t it Harper and Manning, not Dion, who authored the Clarity Act that Chretain stole. And, with 12 years of doing nothing re Kyoto, what makes the libs think they will do anything now. When will Iggy resign and go back to the USA. I think he deliberately threw the election, with his speech last night, and his foot in mouth disease. Maybe he will cross the floor like conservative losers do-BS, Scott- Keith Martin from the recent past. Then add all the ndp crossers to the libs, and no wonder they are in such a mess. Dryden should have said I want my party back, not my Canada.
