Now For The Most Important Vote Of The Day (Updated with results)

Dinning vs Morton vs Stelmach.
What liberal bias? For sheer entertainment value, check out this this ridiculous Globe and Mail piece. I’ve taken the liberty of adding the emphasis the headline writers intended.
dinningscare.jpg
And they don’t get to blame the headline writers for this bit of sneer;

The religious right in this rural area southeast of Calgary mobilized behind Ted Morton, a social conservative who preaches so-called family values.

I look forward to future articles by Walton and Harding to apply “so-called” to the words “Canadian values”.

Results are being posted here, at Larry Johnsrude’s Edmonton Journal blog. (But not very quickly. I think he’s partying with the Stelmach people. Why are journos so bad at blogging?)
You can also follow reports at 660news.com, though there’s no continuous coverage that I’m aware of anywhere.
Or, just read the comments – it seems our readers are bringing them in faster than either of the sources listed above. (I’m updating as they come in)

Results so far in the Alberta Progressive Conservative leadership race with 79/83 polls reporting:
48,543 Jim Dinning
44,046 Ed Stelmach
36,071 Ted Morton
(CTV Calgary hasn’t bothered updating since 11:00 pm mtn)

B. Hoax Aware comments “Amazing. The MSM has abandoned leadership election results reporting to sda !!”
A blogging note – you sure can tell when it’s a big political day around here… just past midnight (Sk time) and there have been 662 visits in the last hour.
And just for fun another poll going horribly wrong…
11:43 pm in Alberta …based on current tallies, and the likely results of the Morton second choice ballots, the SDA Decision Desk is projecting Ed Stelmach the new Premier of Alberta… Now, I’m off to bed, in anticipation of preparing crow for breakfast. Continuing coverage in the comments, presumably.

Morning update
Last Update: 1:25 AM– Sunday December 03
Results from the Alberta Progressive Conservative leadership race with 83/83 polls reporting:
Ed Stelmach 51, 764
Jim Dinning 51, 282
Ted Morton 41, 243
I haven’t read them all, but the comments look to be a hoot.
Ural – “Let me be the first to congratulate the SDA Decision Desk on projecting the winner correctly a full hour and 20 minutes before MSM.”
Cal2 – “sure glad our Liberal Media CBCpravda kept up with the Alberta election – 13 hours between postings on the Pravda website 630 yesterday to 730 this morning . Bit of a contrast compared to the all day luvfest they had commercial free for their liberals.”
MaryT – “Everyone is asking what happened to Dinnings campaign, but no one has said, it became public that he donated mega bucks to Paul Martins campaign last January. That info shocked a lot of people. Be fun to read the Calgary Sun tomorrow. Maybe now the city elites will stop knocking rural Alberta. Ed took several polls in Calgary, explain that.”
Tomax7 – “…pretty sad when Albertan’s gotta get historic news from a Sask blogsite eh?”

  1. Jim,
I have no idea – but I expect rural. Reported are about 75k voters … whatever that means.

  2. Amazing. The MSM has abandoned leadership election results reporting to sda !! Is it ever nice. Don’t need the barf can nearby.

  3. Thank god for SDA so we can have some live news.
I cant believe its not covered on TV OR Radio. Embarrassing.

  4. Results so far in tonight’s final ballot in the Alberta Progressive Conservative leadership race:
    30, 169 Jim Dinning
    25, 576 Ed Stelmach
    21, 844 Ted Morton

  5. Not looking too good for Ted
But Ted will carry a lot of weight in a Stelmach government if Stelmach wins. Man, watching the Canucks win one, taking phone calls, listening to one radio station and monitoring 5 blogs takes a bit of concentration. Very close race. Very close game.
I think Larry has gone to bed.

  6. Larry says:
    With 60 polls reporting:
    Dinning — 35,325
    Stelmach — 24,389
    Morton — 28,886
Think he has found the bar?

  7. I voted for Morton and no doubt he would have been the strongest leader but I did not want the liberal Dinning in there. So if its got to be my second choice, I only hope that honest Ed is up to the job.

  8. Results so far in tonight’s final ballot in the Alberta Progressive Conservative leadership race:
    35, 325 Jim Dinning
    28, 886 Ed Stelmach
    24, 380 Ted Morton

  9. I just left the hangar/museum – most of the ridings counted to date were Edmonton & North with some Calgary ridings. Morton’s big strength is southern Alberta, although Olberg delivered his Strathmore riding to Stelmach, so who knows???
I can live with Ed (although he’s a bit too nice for my liking – what if Harper doesn’t win next year?) but not Dinning.
Dinning will need to get at least 45% of the vote if it goes to a second round, as he’s not going to be 2nd choice for many from the scuttlebutt I’ve been listening to.

  10. One thing that’s not making sense to me is that on QR77 they’re reporting that they’re being told that voting is up anywhere from 50% to 100% over last week.
This would mean at a minimum there should be around 150,000 (~50% increase over 97,000) ballots cast. However, the results posted show a pace of ~120,000 ballots only. I don’t get where they can say that the increase is between 50% and 100% when the numbers show maybe a 25% increase.
    Hyperbole much?

  11. You know… in BC they have a channel the same as CPAC but for the Provincial Legislature… why isn’t there anything like that in Alberta?

  12. Only in Canada, could two leaders be elected by accident, on the same day, however there is still hope for AB. The majority of Mortons 2nd will be for Ed, and he will have to follow some of Ted’s policies if he hopes to win a provincial election. Our aim was to keep liberal Jim on the sidelines. Now he wont have to try and get a seat in a by-election, thus saving AB money. That will be a first for Jim, saving us money.
    Dinning 35225.
    Stelmach 28896.
    Morton 24380.
    As of 10.40 p.m.
75% (my guess) of Mortons will put Ed over the top. At least Dion is not in Power Corps pocket like Rae and Iggy. Uncle Mo must be very unhappy, and Rae’s brother can kiss his huge loans goodbye.
And I still don’t think the enviroment will be a big issue next election.
If Ed ignores Ted, watch for the Alliance or a new party to be born.

  13. xena,
My reference to 75k was to Bubbles’s numbers above. 75k would mean 1/2 of the voters … I can’t see it. I agree with Bubbles 120k tops.

  14. Mary, Ted said he would not leave the conservatives if he lost. In fact, it would be better for the party if he stayed. I think his presence would at least keep the lefties on the straight and narrow. And I would think a few of his conservative policies would be adopted.

  15. maryT: I totally agree with everything you just said. Nice to see someone talking about the PowerCorp/Desmarais cartel. They’re now running the Liberal Party in Ottawa again.
I agree that if Stelmach does not put Ted in a high position of power the Alliance will be the big winner. Either that or Ted will get fed up and leave the Cons to form another separation party. If he did I’d move back in a wink and work for him.

  16. The results seem to have slowed down now. It’s been almost a half hour since the last update.

  17. Last week the last bunch of results came in a lump around 11 pst. The might still be on party lines down south.

  18. If the polls remaining are predominantly from S.AB then this isn’t quite over yet. Morton just has to get 5% more in each poll than stelmach then he’s premier.

  19. Well its not looking any better for Morton. He is at 31000 and Dinning is at 44000. I think Stelmach is at 38000.

  20. Last Update: 11:22 PM – Saturday December 02
Results so far in the Alberta Progressive Conservative leadership race with 74/83 polls reporting:
    46, 001 Jim Dinning
    38, 597 Ed Stelmach
    32, 373 Ted Morton

  21. From one mediocre premier to another.
Will Stelmach offer Morton a cabinet post and if so, will Morton accept it or bolt to the Alliance?
If it is the latter, then in two years Kevin Taft is premier.

  22. Ted will stay and keep Ed in line. We in SA made a decision, morton 1, stelmach 2, to keep dinning out. Wonder what all those libs and ndp voters think today, that spent 5.00 to vote. I do now that there was a lot of fear in Ed about Ted.
Iggy and Jim can go get drunk together. Real happy dinning is out.

  23. I hate going to bed with the bad taste in my mouth that another liberal will be leading the conservative party. Come on Stelmach/Morton.

  24. Bubbles; that’s been part of my beef with Klein regarding the lack of coverage from the Dome. We have more people, more commerce, etc, yet fewer days sitting, fewer QP’s, etc.. Does anyone happen to know what Alberta cabinet ministers are paid in relation to other provinces, and the amount of time they sit?

  25. Last Update: 11:32 PM – Saturday December 02
Results so far in the Alberta Progressive Conservative leadership race with 74/83 polls reporting:
    46, 270 Jim Dinning
    40, 093 Ed Stelmach
    32, 630 Ted Morton

  26. IIRC If the leading candidate has 50% + 1, he wins. If not they go to the second choice ballots.

  27. Kate:
It is a true ranked/preferential ballot. The winner has to get 50% plus one. Morton’s voters have their ballots checked for who they voted for as their #2

  28. Mary I dont think you can count Dinning out yet. In fact he has over 40 percent of the votes cast, and he only needs 50 percent plus one. How many of Mortons second choices would go to him?? He could still pull this off. I heard a while back that many liberals bought conservative memberships to vote for Dinning.

  29. You can pretty well bet that close to zero of Morton’s seconds went to Dinning.
The only question is does Kate declare Stelmach first?

  30. Mike. It’s sad that “Conservatives of convenience” get a say in who is the leader of the Conservative Party.
Memberships sold in the 1 week prior to the vote should not be allowed to vote. Don’t some parties, provincial/federal, do this? Anyone know?
It sucks when your party gets hijacked. Seen this happen too many times before.
