I’m at 10 so far this year. Hoping to make it 12 by the end of the week. Dead squirrels, that is. I would rather eat cat than red rat.
Darcey’s THE MAN!!!
It’s great to see his smiling face!
I miss Darcy, that friday beer and blues was one of my favorites, still looking for He Brew beer, gonna send some to Igula, maybe bring out his inner cossack kinda like Jack Lenin Layton, those manly men of Ottawa like hair net Jilles always ragging on about Harper being a bully, while cheering when Cretin throttled a homeless man on camera all while plundering the treasury. Harper might just try bar-b-Q squirrel with Darcy.
The squirrels are kind of cute around the yard and they entertain our black collie. However, this spring we noticed they were stripping the new leaf growth from the elm trees. To date, the count is squirrels 0, collie’s two-legged pal 3. The decades have taken their toll, but haven’t totally lost the sighting eye.

Erik’s link to Huckabee video. One of the comments was from a lawyer in N.Y. who said that he eats red squirrel and they’re delicious. That’s surprising enough, but he said they’re served at Buckingham Palace.
I’m sure Prince Charles missed that dinner.
In case ya’ll didn’t read it, Darcy at The Broom has had a stroke. Godspeed to him. I hope he fully recovers.
The black and grey squirrels in England are descended from a small number of Canadian working stock originally introduced in the 19th century to break a nut shelling strike organized by Luddite layabouts and agitators pretending to be hardworking native British squirrels.
Since that time these now 100% British born and raised, hard working, well behaved, polite, and friendly animals have faced leftist vilification and xenophobic slanders on an ongoing basis. No baby can receive the slightest unexplained scratch anywhere in England without the British gutter press crying havoc and demanding extermination of these “foreigners”.
Get well riel quick Darcey.
Hang in there,Darcey. Best wishes from me to you.
I ate a lot of red squirrels when I was a kid in Manitoba, we just shot ’em, dressed ’em,and roasted them on a stick over an open campfire.
Delicious.
Praying for a full recovery Darcy! All the best!
Sending good thoughts your way, Darcey. Take care.
Again, this outlines the growing divide between urban and rural folk. (At least many city-dwellers of my generation have some connection to farming and husbandry – because of our agrarian grandparents.)
Most younger (OK, liberal esp) people just assume that food magically appears under plastic in the supermarket. All their killing is done by proxy. They seem horrified that someone might eat squirrel or rabbit.
But, if “organic écuriuel marinated in low salt soy glaze” or “ready to serve lapin” appeared before them shrink wrapped under plastic, it may be the new arugula. Logic is lost on them.
I’m so sorry Darcy, but with a good rehab program and some hard work you will be back to your ole self in no time.
I’ve only eaten squirrel once after surprising myself by shooting two of them out of a tree with 2 shots. They tasted great but there’s not a lot of meat on a squirrel. Seeing as gophers are so similar, has anyone ever cooked up a gopher? We just used to shoot them and leave them on the ground and I hate to think that I missed out on a prairie delicacy.
Just thought I’d point out that the red squirrels in the UK are not the same species as ours here in the Dominion.
Ours are American Red Squirrels (tamiasciurus hudsonicus); the ones in Britain (and Europe) have tufted ears and are sciurus vulgaris.
They are very much an endangered species in the UK, thanks to that all-pervasive intruder from the Americas, the grey squirrel (sciurus carolinensis and sciurus griseus). Some fool brought a few pairs over to Britain from the American colonies a century or two ago and, well, the rest is history.
Interestingly, I never encountered the melanistic form of the grey squirrel while I lived in England (that’s what a black squirrel is). But now I understand they are starting to occur in greater numbers there. Not sure what the genetic reasons are for that.
Maybe Dr Suzuki could take time from healing the planet to find out. At the very least, he’d finally be able to pontificate with some credible basis of expertise.
By the way, you are right. Those American Red Squirrels really are feisty fellows. I have one around here I call Nelson. But not after Lord Nelson of Trafalgar.
After Nelson the bully in The Simpsons.
I never had squirrel, seems to be a lot of work for very little meat.
Woodchucks (groundhogs), however, are different. I just shot one yesterday as it was eating my vegies – I work hard enough for my food, no way I’ll share it with any varmint! My wife will turn it into a succulent stew.
I believe out West, prairie dogs are close relatives to woodchucks. Any of you guys ever try them as food?
Praying for you and for your recovery Darcey – we see a lot of stroke survivors come through and it’s those who have exactly your strength of spirit who make strong recoveries. We’re all thinking of you!
Darcey, you can pull through this setback like you’ve done so many times before. Stay tough.
A prayer for your recovery and well being Darcey. Stay positive.
All that stress must have really got to him. He’s a great guy and a true red-blooded Canadian who understands this country better than most I’ve met in this life.
Hope you are on the mend D’arcy! If you got the clot buster, there’s a pretty good prognosis.
WOW! I clicked on the link and only read the article about his buddy. I have been visiting his site off and on for a few years. I havent been by for awhile as his site has remained the same Ie; friday night blues. I had no idea of his situation and I have nothing but hope for him. Darcy, I dedicate my next jam, with my band, to you brother. A little Twisted Metal Daze for you and I’m gonna drink Pilsner in honour of you. I’m gonna tape it and try to get it to you. Best wishes and prayers to you!
Go drop your wishes at the Broom … link provided above!
AS …. Get Well Soon!
Best wishes for a speed recovery Darcy.
I can’t believe that Darcey had a stroke. He seemed like a tough SOB, what with his working long hours every week. It proves that even the toughest of us are not infallible.
I enjoyed his blog and the Friday night blues and beer posts. Darcey and his fellow DMB posters earned my respect for not falling into the victimology so common among the First Nations community. They were/are of the “you make your own life” mindset.
My prayers are with you. And thanks for replying to my email asking you to repost the “when liberals cry” audio of Michael Savage destroying that Berkely idiot.
Not often that bloggers do that, and I appreciated it because it was so funny (and I couldn’t find that clip in your site’s archives).
P.S. Slow down and relax. I work long hours too, but not the continuous 60 hr work weeks you did.
Darcey, all the best for a speedy recovery.
Darcey, I’m praying for you. I suspect that telling you to relax would be like telling a buzz saw to be quiet, so just take care of yourself and know that a lot of people are thinking of you, sending positive vibes, and are praying for your healing and full recovery. (I’m sorry to read about your lost love.)
OMMAG, the comments are closed over at the broom.
Get well soon Darcey! There are many people pulling for you.

Hang in there, Darcy. I’m sending love and prayers your way, my good man.
Darcey, I hope you know how many lives you have touched with your music, humor and wit for news. So sorry to hear about your stroke, but you are a tough man and I know that you will make a full recovery. Get well soon. There are lots of people sending you love.
