  3. That CBC report also shows FIFTEEN other stories about Syncrude ducks.
    How many stories about windfarm bird kills and the bird-hating bird murderers who support them?
    How many stories about Pablo Rodriguez and his drunk driving conviction?

  6. 100% correct Erik. Since most hunters have “left the field” in the past generation, we are over run with migratory waterfowl. I would love to see some statistics of the population over the past 50 years.

  7. This same element that seeks to shut down the oil sands promotes wind turbines which seem to be killing a lot of PEOPLE. Falls, getting caught in machinery in the pods, etc, is ignored while these same elements deplore military action against misoginist terrorists…….
    My concern is that the fatalities are skilled, gainfully employed, taxpayers…..not a black clad anarchist run over by a bus…..

  8. But the ducks that died in the tailings ponds suffered greatly and their last dying thoughts were probably that it was all so senseless since oil is a non-renewable resource.
    The birds that get hit by turbine rotors probably fall to the ground in rapturous glee knowing that no CO2 emmission were created in the generation of electricity. They died for a noble cause, more quickly and humanely.

  12. And of course nothing is said about the incidents where nature herself takes out literally millions of ducks and other birds during outbreaks on avian botulism in places like Pawkowki Lake and Old Wives Lake, etc.

    Never let the facts stand in the way of a good story, right CBC?

  17. Had to laugh the other day.
    A re-run of “Dirty Jobs”, showed cleaning some type of settling, or sump tanks around La Brea tar pits. They actually showed the guys picking out pieces of decayed birds, squirrels etc from the tar ponds.
    Didn’t they learn anything from this duck thing.
    Quick someone call Greenpeace!

  18. A hardcore enviro would claim that the birds killed by cars also were caused by the oilsands – no oil would mean no cars and those birds would have lived!
    Some would even argue that the cat’s toll was also the result of oilsands – no fuel means no petfood production and delivery and thus no pet cats.

  21. There’s been a lot of media malpractice going on with this case, IMO. I have a few hunting buddies in agencies who contributed to the investigation, and they’ve all been adamant that it’s not about how many ducks were killed – apparently, bird kills are quite common in the oil sands. The problem was that Syncrude didn’t even attempt bare minimum mitigation that all the other companies in the area were doing, and refused to act even when their own employees were insisting that things needed to be done. It was internal whistleblowers that got the whole process started, apparently.

  22. There was an item in the news last week about culling the population of Canada Geese in Bend, Oregon, cause there are just too many of them and their pooping all over the place. Methods they were using: 1) chasing them with dogs, 2) shooting them with paintball guns, and 3) putting oil on goose eggs to prevent them from hatching. Sheesh. If we could just get these birds to land in the right place, it would cost the taxpayer nothing.

    And geese populations have grown so large that they are a nuisance all over. Several small lakes are now closed to swimming out here in the Left Coast. Golf courses are covered with bird manure. The few duck hunters remaining, just can’t harvest enough to make a difference. Not enough ammunition.
    It just doesn’t get any better. The enviro-nuts are creating a perfect storm.

  26. Re Canada Geese culling- Different jurisictions have tried various methods, and have met with limited success- sterilization, capture and relocation, nest destruction, outright elimination.
    Heard about a different tactic the other day- can’t recall where it was implemented, but apparently worked like a charm. Eggs from viable nests were removed, boiled, and returned. The goose continued to incubate the eggs, but obviously, without success. But the brooding instinct prevented her from producing another batch, which would have been automatic had the nest been destroyed.

    That green was the default disguise of the left, was signaled long ago when the Berlin wall came down and a disgruntled Gorby who still loved communism (even while taking credit for taking it down)then took over Green Cross of the World as President. This, from a man who presided over the nation that polluted more than just about any other. They care about the earth -they yearn to control all of it!
    Only the blind could have missed the intent.
