  1. “Death To The Infidels Who Insult Our Prophet!”
Kate, I’m laughing my head off at your hed!

  2. Not everyone on “the left” is huffy about this. Personally, I thought it was a pretty funny dig at the wild distortions of the right. 😉

  3. Red Tory hit it — by accident, I’ll have to assume: the dumbest interpretation isn’t always the best one, particularly when politicos are rendering their verdict as to the acceptability of a particular example of the sort of cartoons which have appeared in the New Yorker over many decades. THose little artifacts are never, ever, political tenets in cartoon form; most of them are, even when they work, ineffable, an intellectual tickle. They can be funny, or ironic, or, often, just an apt little toss-away device providing — trivial — release from the tyranny of imposed narratives.
But we are living in a time, once again, where expressions are required to meet some political test, and where artists — cartoonists — are actually called to heel to comply with dumb political manias, movements where the most emotionally incontinent of the maniacs determine the course of action.
Or, as the progs would have it, we’re building a free world through consensus.

  4. If the righties don’t want to get ugly about race, then the left will, and blame the right for it anyway.

  5. The thing is about political cartoons, is that a successful cartoonist builds and exaggerates on both large and small truths. Sometimes the small truths when enlarged, have the biggest significance…

  6. Those who wish it can be in a huff about virtually anything these days. It is like common sense had been sucked down into a black hole… ooops, can’t use that analogy anymore either.

  7. Their shrillness speaks to how brittle a construct even they think the BO aura is.

  8. They can get as huffy as they like when Obama:
    (a) provides his birth certificate to prove he’s eligible to become hegemon;
    (b) refutes Daniel Pipes’s proof that he is a Mohammedan or apostate with more than “I joined an anti-Semitic, anti-white hate church but left when the hate got too costly politically”; and
    (c) actually sticks to a policy position for longer than two seconds to show what he actually believes.

  9. This reminds me I should get around to photoshopping one of the Bush is a chimp ones to add Obamas smile.
    Course that will be hate,…
Unlike with poor George where it’s just good fun.

  10. “Personally, I thought it was a pretty funny dig at the wild distortions of the right. ;)”
Yes – for once, a political cartoon that’s actually satirical, instead of just an ugly slam.
Isn’t that funny? But these are the same people who have been portraying BushMcChimpyHitler for 8 years now in caricature served straight up, and calling it “satire”, too.
(Now, there’s an image – Obama with chimp ears a la George Bush!)
So, is it any wonder that so many (including the Obama camp) are criticizing it as thought it were a direct slam at Obama?
Their attempt at “satire” has achieved only irony.

  11. Wild distortions of the right?
Which phrase is, itself, a wild distortion which deliberately evokes extreme right-wingers like, hint hint, Hitler and Mussolini, who were, forsooth, extreme left-wingers.
But, heh, please not another WING debate — that won’t fly!

  12. Abe Greenwald, It’s a Cartoon (Laugh) Riot
…That the New Yorker crowd thinks the main issue of Barack Obama’s candidacy is one of racist rightwing demonization is, for a GOP strategist, a heartening revelation. It means the Left is blind to Obama’s non-cartoonish problems: his inexperience, his gaffe-based policies, his abysmal judgment, and the motivation behind his flip-flops, to name a few. The most salient Obama issue is not that the Right suspects him of militant Islamism, but rather that the entire electorate is beginning to wonder what he’s made of. In assuming that the serious Right seeks to burlesque Obama as the embodiment of our anti-American nightmares, the New Yorker burlesques itself…

  13. So what is the Obama camp supposed to say “those are great please make more!”
So have some you forgotten this line in the article?
“McCain spokesman Tucker Bounds quickly e-mailed: “We completely agree with the Obama campaign, it’s tasteless and offensive.”

  14. I see some posters are mentioning flip flopping.
I dont think either candidate is immune to this. There has been a lot of it on both sides.

  15. I saw this thing last night on Drudge and laughed out loud.
What’s funny is the New Yorker thinks
    a) this is satire, and
    b) its helpful to Obama.
Me, I think Rocky and Michelle are a pretty typical pair of late-Boomer Lefty political ladder climbers. They’ve hit the top rung, now they are fighting hard to knock the other guy off the ladder. They don’t know or care a damn about policy from what I can see, they just want to win the top spot. Rock-o will clearly say or do -anything at all- if he thinks it will help.
Call me a racist, but I don’t think a rabid will to win is sufficient reason to elect this guy. Still, he’s not Hillary so that’s a plus.

  16. Public figures have been fairly or unfairly lampooned in caricature for eons. Obama can’t claim immunity since it goes with the turf of being a celebrity. Presidential candidates need to have thick skin and this is nothing compared to what he will face if elected.

  17. Isn’t humour more trouble than it’s worth?
If everyone can always fall back on “oh, I was just kidding” then really, is humour not an insidious aspect of society that causes more harm than it helps? Is there some world clown shortage I am unaware of? Because there is clearly a smart person shortage, and an honesty shortage, and an honour shortage. Did the famous British sense of humour get used against the British, with disastrous results? I think it did. When one is under attack, does one fight back? Or issue witty one liners?
Humour has no place in discussing politics. Speak your goddamned mind like a man for f*ck’s sake. Attack, attack, attack. Always attack.

  18. “Personally, I thought it was a pretty funny dig at the wild distortions of the right. ;)”
This from a wild distortion calling himself ‘Red Tory.’ The irony.
The distortion, actually, isn’t all that distorted. Certainly not as distorted as Bush being depicted as a chimp.
Obama went to school at a madrassa. His father was Muslim, therefore he was born a Muslim. He employs Nation of Islam bodyguards and campaign workers. He counts a former Weatherman terrorist as a friend and associate. He attended a radical black supremacist church for 20 years. Only quitting recently and only because of bad optics.
As it turns out, the cover is not all that distorted at all. The satire may very well backfire, based on its believability. Little wonder he’s concerned.

  19. This will help Obama tremendously. After every “scary image” in this cartoon is debunked by millions of commentators in the coming days, there will be no more room for discussion of Obama’s patriotism, questionable loyalties, and of his wife’s patent hatred of the US. End game.

  20. “There has been a lot of it on both sides”
So, this is the final defence of obama the light worker, the messiah, the man who will do it all differently – he’s no worse than the other guy! That’s not exactly hope and change.

  21. “There has been a lot of it on both sides”
So, this is the final defence of obama the light worker, the messiah, the man who will do it all differently – he’s no worse than the other guy! That’s not exactly hope and change.”
It is not a defence at all. I wont defend his flip flop. My statement is more of a look at your own candidate doing the same if one is pointing fingers at Obama. Both must be judge the same.

  22. The intellectual and emotional IQ of the masses is that of a 12 year old. This is known in advertising and marketing circles .. that if a commercial is not understood by a 12 year old it will not be understood by 95% of the viewing audience.
Get over it folks … that New Yorker cover will be the mental image voters will have of the yObamas in the ‘White’ House …. plain and simple.

  23. Is the angry rejection of the cover by the Obama people an indication of their disposition to censorship? Would an Obama presidency reject the most fundamental of US rights, the First Amendment, the right of freedom of speech?
After all, Bush has been portrayed, both in word and image, in far worse imagery; he never said a word. Yet, Obama immediately attempts to control the people by telling them that such images are unacceptable. Hmm.

  24. “McCain spokesman Tucker Bounds quickly e-mailed: “We completely agree with the Obama campaign, it’s tasteless and offensive.”
I read this as saying Tucker thought the Obama mia campaign was tasteless and offensive… 🙂

  25. ‘Right of Centre’ and ‘Red Tory’.
What next? Up is down, black is white, right is left, etc.
Is this the best you two poseurs can do? Or are you both having a collective identity crisis?
Oh, and Right (ah um) of centre: What exactly isn’t true in what I stated about Obama? Drawing on your infinite wisdom, would you kindly correct any errors?

  26. McCain: his apparent disagreement with the tastelessness of the cover. This is purely for public consumption, part of his tiresome sanctimonious schtick, and a smart tactic.
He won’t win votes (from the converted) by praising the cover but he WILL win votes from disenchanted Hillary supporters by critisising the cover. But does he really feel Obama is being unfairly treated?
He was also publicly against the Swiftboater’s attack on Kerry. But are we to believe he wasn’t thrilled with the exposure of this traitous fraud who went to Vietnam with a movie camera to create a “narrative”, who got a purple heart for a nick, who betrayed his comrades, who gave comfort and succor to the enemy when they were de-moralised and when McCain was a involuntary guest at the at the Hanoi Hilton?
I fully agree with many posters above: there’s no “right wing” distortion of Obama — a dangerous messianic, narcissistic madman — except from MSM who are actively trying to hide his mendacity.

  27. havent I called you out on the Muslim claim already Irwin?
Come on you clown prove he is a Muslim if you can without doubt I will never post on this web page again why you dont take the same bet? If you cant prove then you leave for good.
Once again he is not a Muslim and was not educated at a Madrassa. A radical black supremist church (that’s your opinion)
I wont comment or defend about the bodygaurds as what seperates me from you is that I dont talk about something I have no facts about.

  28. “His father was Muslim, therefore he was born a Muslim.”
Oooh … do the fatwa controllers of the Apostate Police know about this? And will they be tempted to “do something about it”?

  29. “His father was Muslim, therefore he was born a Muslim”
That comment alone shows Irwin’s wisdom. Religion is not a race.

  30. As previously stated, prove anything that I said is wrong.
A hint, I did not say that he is currently a Muslim.
“Come on you clown prove he is a Muslim if you can without doubt I will never post on this web page again why you dont take the same bet?”
    Yikes! Is that you, haye/new?

  31. I suggest Obama grow some balls and suck it up because this is just the beginning. Bush showed a lot of class considering the filth the Left dished out about he and Laura.
Unbelievable that the Americans want such a crybaby for their next President.

  32. The number one source of anti-Obama bashing is the Clinton camp, and now the disgruntled losers are unleashing hell-fire on the Obamba campaign. They will win the election for McCain. They are huge, and growing by the day. The New Porker is shooting at the wrong target.
    http://blog.pumapac.org/

  33. Good point, Gypsy. One of the things I admire most about GWB. That much insane abuse, narry a whine (and no wine either). Grace under pressure eh? A good man, a man of character.
BO Obama is not qualified to be POTUS in any way. He is a man of poor character. A phony. A fraud. A narcissistic messianic psychopathic madman, totally without brief. Clueless.
    He cannot win the presidency.

  34. Not surprising at all that the majority of lefty types howling about this lampoon don’t get it … not even with the telegraphed punch line of a title.. “The Politics of Fear” !
Of course the reaction of the perpetually deluded and ignorant is quite similar to certain religious groups who love to show their opinion of comment and exposure by mass demonstrations and threats ….
The moral of the story … do not bring dishonour to the Prophet …. Ya… hope and change alright.

  35. I think the Left’s concern of this is that crackers like Daisy will not get the meaning.
I can see it now “Hey Bobby Sue looks over yander its a picture of the Obama guy dressed as a Muslim , I tolds yah I tolds yah!”

  36. Is anybody else tired of this so-called ‘Right of centre’ posing as a Conservative?
Add something to the comments, preferrably a counter arguement supported by facts – anything other than your juvenile obnoxiousness.
    Once again:
“Obama went to school at a madrassa (as proven in the national press by Daniel Pipes and not denied by Obama). His father was Muslim, therefore he was born a Muslim (see below). He employs Nation of Islam bodyguards and campaign workers. He counts a former Weatherman terrorist as a friend and associate. He attended a radical black supremacist church for 20 years. Only quitting recently and only because of bad optics.”
To help you with your extreme ignorance: Muslims believe and Islamic doctrine says that if the father is Muslim then the children are born Muslim.
Now, once again, prove me wrong. This time without resorting to the emotional ad hominem attacks that you lefties depend on in lieu of a rational and factually based counter arguement.
You tiresome and easy to expose weasel.

  37. R of C
I personally have enjoyed I.D.’s comments on this and many other threads. You bet is juvenile and you motives show that you are not “right of center”. Even assuming that you are right about this or some other issue, someone who is “right of center” would not discourage those whom may disagree with him/her from contributing to the discussion. Perhaps “left of center” would be a more accurate pot rail of yourself.

  38. Irwin is right, as he always is on these things.
Just saw some tool named Alison Smith on the CBC News, and man is she pissed. Seems the “right-wing blogosphere” is responsible for BHO and wife being portrayed in this manner, and not their deeds as itemized by Irwin.

  39. Fact Obama did not attend a Madrassa he did attend a majority muslim school. If I go to a school with mostly Christian kids is it a christian school?…no. A far cry from a Madrassa as you claim Obama confirmed it. Can you find a link where Obama confirms this?
Fact. A religion is not a race I was born to Catholic parents I was not born catholic as I was given up for adoption to a Protestant family am I Protestant? Your claim is FALSE. A forced view of religious doctrine does not make it a fact.
Radical church is YOUR opinion it does not make it a fact.
Do these things count. I find it funny how often some posters through out insults at people who oppose their views like crazy. But the second it comes back they try and claim a higher moral ground.
PS I will always vote Conservative in Canada and a card carrying member. If you think the Republicans are the only right that counts then so be it.
Come on posters if you let people with half facts and unproven allegations through things out dont they just devalue the site that kate has worked so hard to create.

  40. Yes CBC radio news covered this and they are virtually claiming it’s more proof of the VRWC at work.
    Dumbshits to the core………..
