Rogers Communications is offering voluntary departure packages to roughly half of its employees, in what is believed to be the largest round of buyout offers in Canada’s telecom sector in recent years.
Rogers said about 50 per cent of its roughly 25,000 employees across numerous business divisions will be offered packages, according to the Globe & Mail.
“We are taking steps to adjust our cost structure to reflect the business realities of the current environment. As part of this, some teams have chosen to offer voluntary departure and retirement programs to give some employees the choice to decide whether they’d like to stay with the company or begin a new chapter,” said Rogers spokesperson Zac Carreiro in the report.
Does anyone in Canada actually work for Rogers or are they all in the Philippines?
My brother worked for Rogers for over 30 years, retired last year at 66 because he wanted to finish whatever project he was working on. They still do / did a lot of IT and other RandD in Canada. But maybe that’s changing.
Half the staff? A staffing cut on that scale can often mean bankruptcy in the offing.
I suspect this is in large part due to the “merger” of Rogers and Shaw. A similar thing happened years ago when NOVA and TransCanada Pipelines “merged”. Both of these situations were called “mergers” because the tax implications are better than for takeovers. In the NOVA and TransCanada “merger”, lots of the NOVA people left.

My guess is they are offering a package to anyone who wants it. Back in the late 80’s my Canadian company announced a merger with an Aussie company. They offered a standard package to anyone who wanted to take it – 6 months plus 2 weeks per year of service. They did not get enough takers, so some were forced out.
Another similar one…in 1989, Molson Breweries “merged” with Carling-O’Keefe Breweries. (It was a takeover). Molson then decided to consolidate operations by closing down the more inefficient breweries. Not surprisingly, almost all former Carling-O’Keefe plants. Employees were offered transfers or buy-outs. For those who took transfers, they had to move to other cities – Regina, Edmonton or Winnipeg, for example. A year later, those were closed too, with almost no transfers offered. Employees who had moved from Saskatoon, for example, were now stranded in their new cities.
One positive, a group of employees from the Saskatoon plant managed to buy the brewery from Molson (with the provincial gov’t ‘encouraging’ Molson to approve the sale). The result was Great Western Brewery, which is now one of the largest independent breweries in Canada.
True, but it didn’t happen at the time of the M&A because Sunnyways and appearances. It was always going to happen.
It won’t be “mostly Shaw staff”, since in the western provinces, Shaw was the cable provider while Rogers was mostly cellular. That doesn’t mean that buyouts won’t happen, just be more targetted.
If this follows previous practices by Telcos, many will be hired by company contractors to continue the same work, without the same benefits, at similar rates of pay. Bell and Telus have done the same many times previously.
A.I. will also replace many office and clerical staff. Yeah, it’s already happening.
I am old enough to remember when Rogers abandon its Calgary customers to Shaw cable. We used to have a Rogers cable box until about 1990.
Shaw was in the north of the city and Rogers in the south.
Never been a Rogers customer since except for a few forays to Rogers Video. Always preferred Block Buster.
