Canadian Journalist Thinks Toronto Is A “Country”

Peter C. Newman;

“Like it or not, the Liberals have long been our political gods, turning this awkwardly giant land mass into a field of realizable dreams. But the gods have changed. No smaller concept can encompass what happened to Canada in the spring of 2011 — when for the very first time voters handed a clear majority to a government run by a politician whose ideals and goals seemed antithetical to the country I thought I knew.”

The Libranos Decline Comment

Montreal Gazette;

Contributions made to Bob Rae’s failed bid to take over the leadership of the federal Liberal party in 2006 appear to have helped the RCMP connect the dots in part of their continuing investigation into alleged corruption of Canada Revenue Agency employees.
Documents filed in connection with Project Cloche describe how the RCMP came to believe that Delvex Consulting Group, a LaSalle-based firm that advises companies on how to apply for research and development tax credits, is secretly owned by five men, including Francesco Bruno, 50, of Laval, head of a construction company who pleaded guilty to tax evasion in February, and three CRA employees who were fired in 2009 and 2010.

The documents “do not allege any wrongdoing on Rae’s part”. He was just the leadership hopeful they gave $10,000 to.

The Libranos: Say It Isn’t So, Joe

11:25 ET Update – Volpe story just got bigger. Volpe was confronted by the GP canvasser on the scene. Also, Elections Canada has finally returned their call.

“I said to JV: “Interesting version of democracy Joe.” He denied what I had just seen. I told him I had pix.I was so disappointed.”

More updates likely here as the story progesses.
Bumped to 10:20am ET – SDA gets results!

“I do not engage in or condone this type of campaign behavior. When this issue about the canvasser was brought to my attention by the Green Party candidate, in deference to his concern and to the hard work of my own campaign, the canvasser was released by the campaign.” – Joe Volpe

No acknowledgement from Volpe that he was standing only feet away when the “campaign behavior” took place. But speaking of non-acknowledgements, Orla indicates the theft was immediately reported to the Returning Officer. That was at least two days ago. As of last evening, there was still no reply.
Note – what the Volpe campaign has now admitted to is an offense under the Elections Act. Volpe has been prominently featured in news coverage alleging “dirty tricks” against his campaign. We need to hold media feet to the fire on this one.

As I was exiting Lotherton Estates, Eglinton Lawrence Riding, Toronto, after nearly 4 hours canvassing, I saw Joe Volpe’s handler put our flyer in this bin at @ 4:45 p.m. I was like, WTF?

Caption reads: April 22, 2011 5:04:37 PM: There is Joe Volpe. His handler is picking up the flyers before Joe gets there. Very handy that handler. He changes things up in a second ’cause Joe got chatting with 177.

The First American Prime Minister Is Surprised

Michael Ignatieff on Lawn Sign Volunteergate;

“A Conservative party operative stands accused of fooling around with something that is very important to Canadian democracy, which is the citizens’ right of access to information.”

None of this can be compared at all to the non-controversy known as Pablo “failing to blow” Rodriguez. He’s a Liberal candidate, and thereby immune from media interest.

Why Michael Ignatieff Won’t Form A Coalition

He already has one.

“This Accord will expire on June 30, 2011 unless renewed.”

Legal analysis, via email;

I have reviewed The December 1 2008 Accord with the Liberals and NDP;
Here is my legal interpretation
1. It is a “Live ” document and is binding on the parties.
2. Termination – No termination by any party– Termination only occurs on June 30th 2011
3. Document BINDS the NDP and Liberals ( the Liberals cannot unilaterally back out of deal)– the NDP can force compliance.
4. Given that Michael Ignatieff signed the document– he can not argue bad faith, or had no knowledge and as such is bound to the Agreement

Ass Kicked To The Curb In Canadian Politics

“Partly, that makes me mad at myself – for trusting him, for believing him when he said he believes in the same things I do, and for devoting billable time (and vacation time with my kids, even) to following him in an erratic, bizarre campaign that ended in the single digits.”*.

Update – Well, looks like someone had a real thing for ol’ Rocco. There hasn’t been a meltdown of this order since he and Billie Joe were seen throwing sofas off the Tallahatchie Bridge.
