  5. Well, that’s one way to ensure PM Harper & the gang stay in power. Lieberals haven’t had a leader since Crouton and that ain’t saying much. I will give Tequila Sheila one thing: She has bigger balls than the last three Lieberal leaders. Mouth too, for that matter.

  8. The current party president, Alf Apps, has said if the Liberals are serious about revival, they will in future rely a lot less on “middle-aged white guys, like myself.”
    Ahhhh… so the Librano$ finally have the solution. They will now rely a lot more on “middle-aged white guys like”…. Tequila Sheila and Boob Rae.
    Then the icing on the cake is this from Sheila’s tribute to Jack Layton:
    “I was feeling a little lonely at the time. Jack reached out and even offered a spot in his party if I so chose. For many reasons, we never consummated the deal ( sounds like an Atwood Hand-Maid). In many respects, his party and mine shared much in common. “
    So there you have it from the former (thank God for small mercies) Deputy Prime Minister of Canada…Tequila Sheila… who said the NDP and Librano$ “have a lot in common”.
    If there is a Blue Liberal left, surely this is the last one they’ll take for the Party.

  13. Maybe they could just put Pierre Trudeau’s embalmed remains under glass in a seance room, call him the leader of the party, hold caucuses led by a medium and be done with it. It would look slightly less pathetic and lend a bit more of a sense of reality and gravitas to the proceedings.

  19. With all due respect to Jack Layton and his health issues, Copps’ warm and fuzzy article is way over the top and gives Layton much more credit than he deserves. “Eight years in the political wilderness” is hardly resume material.
    As for managing his newly elected Quebec MP’s, this is more of a reflection on a free pass from the media than it is with Layton’s management skills. If PMSH was to “manage” his MP’s in the same manner, Copps and the media would indignantly howl “muzzling” and “control freak”.
    Layton’s invitation to Copps to defect to the NDP speaks volumes about his judgement.

  20. I dunno… If Layton doesn’t come back, it opens up a huge opportunity for the Libs under Rae as interim, and they have at least 2 years to work it. Remember, the NDP mostly took out the Bloc in Quebec, and they did it with total political rookies.
    Layton IS the NDP brand in Quebec, and the party is going to have a heckuva time balancing their bases there and the ROC. Without him, I can envision Quebec going back to the Libranos in the next election.
    I wish Jack well battling his cancer, but if I was a Lib, I would be making serious plans around his not returning to the House.

The odd thing is, after she dropped out (or was pushed out) of politics, Sheila Copps wrote a fair-to-middling column for the Toronto Sun, and seemed to regain some of her marbles (because she sure misplaced them during the whole time she was in Ottawa). Meanwhile, John McCallum, who used to write quite sensible columns in the Financial Post and graduated on to politics, seemed to lose most of his.
    Anyway, don’t count the Liberals out. If the NDP screws up as Opposition, like by giving more attention to Israel than to Canada, there’s only one alternative party that non-Conservatives can fairly reliably turn to.
    Plus, don’t forget 1993, when the Progressive Conservatives were reduced to two seats. It took a while, but they got out of the hole eventually. With the right set of circumstances, so will the Liberals. I’m not saying I want them to, but they likely will anyway.

  22. The Progressive Conservatives won a brace of seats with Kim Campbell leading the party.
    It’s not so far-fetched to believe the Liberals could double that number with Sheila Copps at the helm…

    Actually, 1993 was the death knell of the Progressive Conservatives. Today’s Conservatives are the former Reform / Alliance party.

  24. I give Jack Layton no credit whatsoever for the NDP surge in Quebec. He got what slopped over from Harper’s full bucket. It was Mr. Harpers astute policies of staying out of Quebec’s face and jurisdiction that sank the Blochead’s boat and forced Gilles Deceit to go down with his ship. As to the Adscammer Party of Thieves and Liars, Quebec will never forgive them. The Liberals will never regain Quebec. Name me one party in history that once having been booted out of Quebec ever regained any prominence there. Besides Harper is ending the Chretien/Liberal Forced Union Dues for Political Parties or Poll Tax on Voters. They all now have to follow a Crow’s Ass from dumpster to dumpster for their next meal. If Harper keeps all his promises, he is going to sweep all of Canada including Quebec in the next election….

    nv53, Indeed. And it was Sheila Copps and the Rat Pack which dragged the Liberals out of irrelevance after 1984. And Copps was the only one to stand up to Martin and his leadership steamroller.
    djb, quite right; it was Layton, not the NDP which won Quebec. But remember, Quebec has not voted primarily for the Liberals since 1980. It was Tory after 1984 and Bloc since 1993. Picking Copps would be a smart move by the Liberal Party to try to rebuild their real base, Ontario.
    To the rest of you, most of you posters here are suffering from a severe case of over-confidence. Take an enemy lightly and you are just setting yourselves up for future disappointment. Whatever Copps’ shortcomings, lack of courage is not one of them.

  28. Baby’s back?!?! Get ready for the political theater sequel to “What Ever Happened To Baby Jane – (the Betty Davis masterpiece about morbid narcissism) In this episode we see a saggy,shrewish, frumpy old battle-axe and her party hold a nation hostage to their morbid fantasies of past glory.
    Who will the Libs disinter next? Perhaps They’re busy in a laboratory somewhere attempting to clone a new PET ( Woody Allen style) from DNA he left on an old cocktail napkin.

    And, there’s the rub: Sheila’s going to bring in a lot of new blood to the party — with big bucks? I can’t see it happening.
    It’s one thing for the rats to abandon ship. But when they start coming back to the wreck, it’s only dead meat they’re after.
    Sheila’s becoming the Librano Party President doesn’t look or smell too good.

    I will never forget or forgive Copps for her cynical “promise” to eliminate the GST,then her resignation,and subsequent triumphant re-election in the seat her Daddy bought for so many years,all at taxpayer’s expense,of course.
    Copps epitomizes all the wrong things about Liberals,part of the old guard elite,and seeing nothing wrong with returning to the good old Liberal ways that saw so much corruption and graft.
    Canada doesn’t need politicians like Copps,she’s a dinosaur,but must still hunger for power and privilege.
    If Copps is the best Leader the Liberals can find, maybe the Party IS truly dead.

    Copps would be chewed up and spit out by PMSH. She does represent all that is wrong with the Libel Party. Talk about living in the past. The bright side might be that she would ensure an NHL franchise for Copps Colliseum! Public/Private investment. RIM and the Feds! Let’s jump on the gravy train for one last ride.
    As a side bar. Has anyone heard rumours about further prosecutions from the Abscam debacle. I am hearing rumour that an implicated individual is talking to the RCMP. I have seen nothing in the press.
