By now it should be clear that the subjection of the United States to the dictatorship of Donald Trump is no longer a theoretical possibility or even a distant probability. It is an imminent reality.

It is not here, quite – critics of the President remain at large, the courts are still attempting to enforce the rule of law, the results of the 2026 and 2028 elections have not yet been determined – but the pieces are being put in place at astonishing speed.

To call what is happening a “slide” into authoritarianism, as if it were something anarchic and uncontrolled, would not be apt. It is more like a cementing. Having slipped back into power by the narrowest of margins, Mr. Trump and his acolytes have been steadily expanding from that beachhead, each new power serving as the means to acquire still more.

Often these powers have been acquired illegally, in brazen defiance of the Constitution. But so long as no one holds them to account for it, and so long as the administration refuses to be held to account, they become ratified by convention, or practice, or sheer nerve, the de facto rapidly congealing into the de jure.

…or maybe Andrew is bitter because Conservatives fired his father…

That’s a good question, because, does anyone remember the Coutts Nine? Does anyone even know who or what the Coutts Nine are? We should, given that they were arrested along with four other men who were charged with conspiracy to murder police at the COVID 19 mandate protest in the town of Coutts, Alberta. A protest that coincided with Freedom Convoy protest in Ottawa that took place in the winter of 2022. Those four men came to be known as the Coutts Four, and while conspiracy charges were not laid against the Coutts Nine, it was implied, at the time of their arrests, by the RCMP and the government and the media, that they were involved in that plot. To that end they were all charged with mischief and weapons possession offences, and we have heard little of their fate since.

An Ontario judge has ordered the RCMP and TD Bank to hand over records related to the freezing of Evan Blackman’s bank accounts during the 2022 Freedom Convoy protest in Ottawa.

Blackman was arrested on February 18, 2022, under the federal government’s invocation of the Emergencies Act, and charged with mischief and obstruction. He was acquitted in October 2023, but the Crown appealed and a new trial is set to begin on August 14, 2025.

Blackman is now seeking access to records detailing how and why his accounts were frozen, to support a Charter application at his retrial. His lawyers argue the freeze was a serious violation of his constitutional rights and plan to ask the court to stay the case.

“The freezing of Mr. Blackman’s bank accounts was an extreme overreach on the part of the police and the federal government,” said Chris Fleury, a constitutional lawyer representing Blackman.

“These records will hopefully reveal exactly how and why Mr. Blackman’s accounts were frozen.”

Blackman welcomed the ruling.

“I’m delighted that we will finally get records that may reveal why my bank accounts were frozen,” he said.

The Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms, which is backing Blackman’s legal challenge, called the ruling a significant development.

National Post: Guilbeault is now back in charge of controlling the internet

Guilbeault will be supervising the implementation of the Online Streaming Act, a 2023 law that enables the feds to impose content controls over much of the Canadian internet.

Tuesday’s cabinet shuffle retained Guilbeault in his pre-election post as minister of Canadian Identity and Culture. The position gives him oversight over the CBC, Parks Canada, the Department of Canadian Heritage and the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission, among others.

The Act also requires streaming services to pay five per cent of their revenues to government-administered media funds.

Within hours of Guilbeault’s reappointment, one of those funds, the Canada Media Fund, publicly welcomed him into the post.

Meet the new basic dictatorship, same as the old basic dictatorship: Yesterday we saw @NatashaMontreal beat down by cops in Montreal; today we learn that @MeghanEMurphy’s bank accounts have been frozen, thus preventing her from returning home to Vancouver as a candidate for the federal election.

Last month, I decided to run as a Canadian Member of Parliament, and began to publicize my decision to run for the People’s Party of Canada (PPC)—the only party truly committed to fighting for freedom and women’s sex-based rights.

My candidacy was confirmed officially on Tuesday. That same day, I tried to access my bank account and could not. I contacted my bank, Vancity, and was informed the account had been frozen as per direction from the government. I had accessed my account just two days prior, so the timing was clear. I had not been informed of this freezing by anyone — not the bank, not the government. No one attempted to contact me. I was completely blindsided.

When I contacted my bank they refused to give me any information beyond the fact they were following government orders, and they gave me a number and name to contact. I called the number, and got a voicemail saying the employee was on vacation all week. So basically this guy froze my bank account and immediately went on vacation.
