“In 2000 I left the country and came back five years later to witness a time lapse of Liberal decay. “

Darcey is pissed off with Mickey I. (language alert):

The other day Liberal leader Michael Ignatieff stood up in the House of Commons and rallied his Liberal troops to bring down the Harper Conservative government while there was still some Canada to save – the Tories could “change Canada beyond recognition.”
My first problem with this is what kind of old Canada is Michael Ignatieff referring to because from various accounts he was out of the country for the last thirty years…
I was gone five years and I’m still trying to adjust and my mind can’t even begin to fathom thirty. Michael Ignatieff has done so and talks like he knows and sees everything. What is best for Canada and what is best for you and I but I’m not buying it and I’m thinking not many ordinary Canadians are. I don’t even believe that he is even talking to us at all, just soundbites for the media and feel good sentiments for the head nodding crew who rub…

Beats the hell out of me too

One has sympathized with Sen. Colin Kenny’s desire that our politicians would discuss the Afghan situation seriously for the benefit of the public. The problem is that they just won’t. Brian Platt at The Canada-Afghanistan Blog:

CKNW, Afghanistan, And Our Terrible Politicians

I attended a CKNW radio show today at the Afghan Horsemen restaurant, where they were doing a live town hall discussion on Canada and Afghanistan. Their interviews included a Canadian soldier, an Afghan-Canadian, and a poli-sci prof at SFU–but also Terry Glavin, who closed the show with a magnificent spiel that cut through all the bullshit and left us in speechless awe. The fact that Terry only got three minutes to speak out of a 2-hour show is criminal.

You can hear hour 1 of the show here. Hour 2 here. Yours truly has a short time at the mike at the 32:40 mark of the first hour. But if nothing else, make sure you hear the last five minutes of hour 2.
The bulk of the show was taken up by a panel discussion with three MPs: Andrew Saxton from the Tories, Ujjal Dosanjh from the Liberals, and Peter Julian from the NDP. The segment was mostly useless, with the MPs spouting their talking points and trying to score points off each other. Why on earth would CKNW think that was the best use of the show’s time? Beats the hell out of me…

P.S. – You were right about Terry’s bit. Here’s an .mp3 of his summation as a stand-alone – great radio! Well done TGG

Y2Kyoto: David Suzuki’s Real Estate Footprint

David Suzuki,

““We’re in a giant car heading towards a brick wall and everyones arguing over where they’re going to sit.”

David Suzuki,

“I love Kitsilano and Vancouver, but there are too many people and too many cars. I think we can have greater density if we made the city much more hostile to cars. The cars have made our city unattractive, and thus I like to spend more of my time in a smaller place at Quanta [ed, Quadra] Island where we also have a home.”

… and David Suzuki!

“One of my favourite summer activities is picking wild blueberries with my family at our cabin in northern B.C“

h/t Mike W, who notes – “Last time I checked Quadra Island did not qualify as Northern BC”

“Three Young Adults”

There once was a time that when someone suggested we “ban knives”, they meant it as sarcasm.
Then again, there once was a time that intelligent, rational policy makers understood that violent acts are perpetrated by violent offenders – not by their instruments of choice. It was also understood that the more deadly the instrument chosen, the more dangerous that offender was, and the greater the imperative to apprehend them.

Sale Of Large Knives Questioned – Still no arrests after attack in Saskatoon
News of a chilling day-light Machete attack on Saskatoon’s Meewasin trail has Mayor Don Atchison calling for action from the justice department.

Meanwhile, local media remain completely uninterested in chasing down and reporting an actual description of the assailants to the public.
Instead, they’re hard at work identifying and confronting lawful retailers who sell decorative swords.
You know, there once was a time when I thought local media might be able to escape the extinction facing their national cousins, as they enjoy a unique opportunity to present current events in a way that’s timely, regionally relevant and agenda free.
Looks like I was wrong.

Give it your best shot. In the immortal words of “the Phantom” …

K-man has done nothing wrong. Zero. He printed words on the internet. A lame-o joke. That’s nothing.
And because he’s done exactly nothing, he should get NAILED TO THE WALL in exactly the same fashion as others have been nailed to the wall by him and his buddies in the anti-hate industry.

Precisely!

Live By The Slur… “Catgastrogaffe”

(bumped) the “Catgastrogaffe” scandal grows… How Ignatieff’s war room handles a crisis”

Seriously, for someone who claims to be an Internet guru, he is exceptionally naïve – like this time, when he seemed to think a Nigerian scam-mail letter was real; or this time, when he bought into an Internet hoax about cell phones – and then deleted his embarrassing responses to same. I wonder if Kinsella has liquid paper all over his computer screen. […]
Is this the template for how Ignatieff will handle other crises in the future? No campaign is error-free; no chatty politician, let alone a team of them, can get through a campaign without making gaffes. A war room cannot stop gaffes from happening, but they can try to defuse them as soon as possible. Kinsella turned a one-day minor story into half a week and counting – and his blamestorming “apology” will only irritate anyone who actually reads it, though I’m not sure the 200,000+ readers of Sing Tao are all clicking their way over to Kinsella’s site right now.

Ignatieff Tainted By Anti-Chinese Web Of Hate

Via someone who will make it her life’s work to never let anyone forget;

“Our community is deeply concerned with Mr. Kinsella’s comments. Kinsella repeats the most vulgar and offensive stereotypes by associating the meat served by Chinese restaurants to cat meat. He has hurt the feelings of the Chinese people and disrespected the Chinese culture,” continued Yuan.
“This is not the first instance of such intolerant remarks by Mr. Kinsella therefore we call upon Liberal leader Michael Ignatieff to fire Mr. Kinsella as his senior strategist and apologize to the community.”
