70th Anniversary of D-Day
Lest we forget, 70 years ago today, around 156,000 Allied soldiers descended upon Northern France as part of Operation Overlord. Undoubtedly, it was one of the most ambitious military operations the world has ever known and the first step in the Western Allies’ march into Hitler’s Nazi Germany.
Thankfully their efforts have not been forgotten. 359 Canadians died on Juno Beach that day. Remember them. Remember them proudly.
The Bubble
We blame this in part on the absence of true intellectual and ideological diversity in so much of the academy, the policy world and the mainstream media. Most college kids at good schools today know many more people from different races and cultural groups than their grandparents did, but they are much less exposed to people who think outside the left-liberal box.
Tina Fey, fool.
Say it with me, liberals.
Sarah Palin was right.
I guess living in a State formerly owned by Russia, sold to the US because the Russians learned their military was completely outclassed during the first Crimean War may have given her a little deeper perspective than her critics. Not that her critics have ever been accused of depth.

Battle of Britain Day
73 years ago today “the most decisive confrontation of the Battle of Britain took place in the skies above London”. Here’s a documentary about the overall event.

John Diefenbaker’s Vision of Canada
As Leader of the Opposition from 1963 to 1967, and as a backbencher until his death on Aug. 16 1979, the MP from Prince Albert vigorously opposed just about every aspect of the new national identity that was being forged.
When Diefenbaker saw the Red Ensign replaced by the Maple Leaf flag, he saw a century of Canada’s history being erased. When he saw Canada being re-defined, first as two nations and later as a collection of many groups defined by their ethnicity, he saw Confederation being dismantled.

An Uncomfortable Truth for the Modern Left
Yesterday marked the 24th Anniversary of an historic event called The Baltic Way. In the Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia, & Lithuania, human beings held hands along an unbroken chain of 600 km. They did this to protest the oppressive force that is Communism. Legal Insurrection has more.

What is a Hundred Year Storm
Anyone reading the comment sections of various media outlets has seen some person using the Calgary flooding of 2005 and the event last as 2 ‘hundred year storms’ within seven years. While not always, the events are generally used to link AGW to the Calgary flood.
This article spells out nicely just what, ‘a hundred year’ event is.
tldr; A one in one hundred chance that a regionally based amount of rainfall/snowfall/flood volume will happen over a specified amount of time every year.
I’ve heard the amount of rainfall in SW Alberta triggering the ‘hundred year storm’ designation was 12″ in 12 hours. I have no idea if that is accurate.
So, the next time you see someone say, “I’ve seen a lot of these hundred years storms! Must be AGW!”, roll your eyes and have sympathy, they are illiterate.
D-Day Remembered
69 years ago today, Canadians and other Allied forces invaded France in what was the start of a long march to Berlin to crush Hitler and his Nazi regime. More here.
