Assuming that New Brunswick puts the seized cigarettes back on the shelf and eventually collects the tax, the cost of the enforcement efforts still amount to a net loss to taxpayers.
Authorities in New Brunswick say they’ve seized millions of contraband cigarettes that represent $1.1 million in lost tax revenue.
Today’s announcement by public safety officials was the first since the province’s Liberal government invested $1.2 million to support contraband enforcement in the spring budget.

The media still says “$1.1 MILLION!!!!” like it’s a lot of money.
That’s the price of a decent renovation in Toronto. Not the house, the reno.

Precisely. That’s what the Lieberals cost this country every minute on a slow Tuesday…
Math is hard.
These are results since the spring budget, so still time to exceed the budget costs.
These seized products won’t be resold, manufacturing method and quality questionable, so destroyed. Would buyers have purchased regulated products instead? Knowing quite a few smokers, they’d suck it up and buy legal until they found a new supplier. There would be some return on costs, though unlikely 100%.
Keep doing the work and it may get close.

Theses cigarettes are usually the exact same cigarettes sold in the stores, the only difference being the local taxes haven’t been paid, and they don’t have the local taxes paid packaging indicating so, usually just the colour of the “pull string” on the outer plastic wrap.
A former coworker used to buy them, no different than the store-bought ones, except for the taxes and packaging.
But yes, probably destroyed.
The loneliest job in Manitoba had to be the one at the Ontario/Manitoba border on the Trans-Canada highway at the entering Manitoba truck weigh scales that had the sign “Stop and pay your Manitoba cigarette tax”……
Premier Susan Holt is the perfect Liberal.
Math doesn’t matter.
Debt is a good thing.
Budgets are for entertainment purposes only.
Truth is a nebulous concept.
Lies are currency.
And just like Pipsqueak Carny, though he may be taller than her, she believes more Government is always the answer.
And Europe is a good role model.
With a 25% French population voting Liberal(why do English maroons vote for the French Liberal Party of Quebec?), women loving big Mommy Government, inept Liberal governance, and the Cons, as usual, playing the Stupid Party; it shan’t be long before bended knee is a requirement rather than a choice.
Writing from Fredericton, NB, I agree. The last NB budget tabled a $1-billion budget, a ridiculously high deficit for a small, poor province. There is very little intelligent discussion of the province’s poor finances, given the sorry state of our media. Too many people want free stuff. Half of the population here is rural-based. And one would be amazed about the underground economy in the sticks. And in our four small cities for that matter.
It’s kind of painfully funny to watch the Telegraph-Journal newspaper shrink.
I suspect it’s mimicking the economy.
And the bond ratings.
I believe this math was the sole reason America never pursued FRAUD … until … The Somali *ahem* “community” ran the theft up into the $Billions. Yeah, now we can afford to dedicate a few FBLie employees to pursue that Fraud.
Oh! And Nick Shirley.
