Your Moral And Intellectual Superiors

According to the Washington Post…

You might expect the biggest lease owner in Canada’s oil sands, or tar sands, to be one of the international oil giants, like Exxon Mobil or Royal Dutch Shell. But that isn’t the case. The biggest lease holder in the northern Alberta oil sands is a subsidiary of Koch Industries, the privately-owned cornerstone of the fortune of conservative Koch brothers Charles and David.

Oops.

Who is Post reporter Juliet Eilperin? Among other things, she is married to Andrew Light, who writes on climate policy for the Center for American Progress. The Center for American Progress is an Obama administration front group headed by John Podesta, who is a “special advisor” to the Obama administration. CAP’s web site, Think Progress, has carried out a years-long vendetta against the Koch brothers that has focused largely on the environment. Ms. Eilperin’s conflict in writing about environmental issues has already been a subject of controversy at the Post.

The Keystone Pipeline

Currently running above ground.

Keystone’s friends and foes alike may have underestimated the North American rail system’s ability to handle the thick, gritty oil from western Canada known as tar sands. And while rail was originally a stopgap solution to the lack of a pipeline, oil producers have discovered its advantages.
Now, transportation and energy experts on both sides of the border believe that Canadian crude shipments by rail will continue to increase, whether the pipeline is ultimately approved and built or not. Concerns about the safety of rail shipments after a series of recent derailments won’t slow the growth, they say.

Now is the time at SDA when we juxtapose!
National Energy Board, November 28th, 2013 – Expectations for a mild winter could lead to lower propane demand in Canada and the U.S.
CTV Ottawa, January 27th, 2014 – Eastern Ontario homeowners hit with skyrocketing propane bills
Associated Press, January 29th, 2014 – The propane drain coincides with extreme cold temperatures in several Midwestern and Southern states where residents and business owners are struggling to keep heating tanks filled due to increased costs or supply cut-offs.
There’s more – “National supplies of propane were depleted by a late harvest that increased demand from farmers who needed to dry an unusually large amount of grain before storage.”
To make ethanol.

Oh, Frack

Your moral and intellectual superiors;

The headline on the AP “Big Story” on January 5 read “Some States Confirm Water Pollution From Drilling”. Not too ominous. But reporter Kevin Begos says in the lead paragraph that “…hundreds of complaints have been made about well-water contamination from oil or gas drilling, and pollution was confirmed in a number of them, according to a review that casts doubt on industry suggestions that such problems rarely happen.” Whoa! Lots of water is being contaminated, and drilling companies are lying.
[…]
Complaints? Yes, plenty. And that news comes first. But actually polluted wells? Not many, information that comes much later. And, even while acknowledging that the complaints refer to ALL drilling, Begos nonetheless manages to emphasize the connection to fracking, devoting a couple early paragraphs to the drilling technology that’s stirring up controversy, even going so far as to note that while other sorts of drilling may cause pollution, “Experts say the most common type of pollution involves methane, not chemicals from the drilling process.” Oops, there we go again… confusing complaints and pollution.

Capitalism is, you know, like, wrecking the earth, man.

Colin Grabow: If You Think Communism is Bad For People, Check Out What it Did To The Environment:

When the Berlin Wall came down and the Iron Curtain was finally lifted to expose the inner workings of communism to Western eyes, one of the more shocking discoveries was the nightmarish scale of environmental destruction. The statistics for East Germany alone tell a horrific tale: at the time of its reunification with West Germany an estimated 42 percent of moving water and 24 percent of still waters were so polluted that they could not be used to process drinking water, almost half of the country’s lakes were considered dead or dying and unable to sustain fish or other forms of life, and only one-third of industrial sewage along with half of domestic sewage received treatment.

Do yourself a favour and read the whole thing.

What If We Could Be Russia For A Day?

I mean, just, just, just one day.

…the U.S. foundations include multi-billion dollar activist organizations, built of fortunes from the Fords and Rockefellers, the Hewletts and Packards, that dwarf anything that exists in Canada. As if that didn’t provide them enough advantage, the U.S. foundations act in concert, deciding among themselves what the priorities for the nation and beyond should be, the better to concentrate pressure. There is no two-way street – U.S. foundations can and do routinely influence Canadian policy; Canadian foundations can’t and don’t influence U.S. policy. The U.S. influence, moreover, is all the more powerful because most Canadians have no clue when the exhortations coming from Sierra Club, Greenpeace or the David Suzuki Foundation are financed by U.S. interests, to further a U.S. agenda.

Free Ethical Oil!

Terence Corcoran;

…when high-profile anti-Keystone and anti-oil sands campaigners need cash, they go where the money is-the big U.S. charitable foundations that have become ATMs for scores of groups and organizations that now earn a living fighting Canada’s oil industry. […]
In all, Ms Krause has uncovered $3.2-million in new money distributed by Tides USA in recent months, tax-free dollars delivered to groups and organizations with specific objectives aimed at disrupting and fomenting opposition to Canadian energy development, including pipelines east and west. The recipients include the usual suspects–Sierra Club, Environmental Defence, Greenpeace, Friends of the Earth (the list with details can be found at FP Comment’s Web site).
To the unaware it might appear that these groups represent some kind of groundswell of opposition within Canada and abroad to oil sands development and to the Keystone XL pipeline. If these groups are active, they must have a lot of on-the-ground funding and backing. Looking at the Tides grants, however, suggests there is no such groundswell. What we have, on the contrary, is an elaborate taxpayer-subsidized scheme to manufacture dissent.
