Climategate 2.0: Hide The Decline

Part Two;

[In 2003] no one knew about “hide the decline”. Mann et al do not mention anything about deleting adverse data. The Briffa reconstruction labeled in the legend as “Briffa et al scaled 1856-1980″, giving no clue to readers of hide-the-decline. Let’s now look at a magnified version of this graphic, blown up so that we can see how they handled the Briffa (orange) reconstruction. As sharp-eyed CA readers observed, if you squint closely, you can see that the Briffa reconstruction was chopped off before its end.
Indeed, they did not simply “hide the decline”, their “hide the decline” was worse than we thought. Mann et al did not merely delete data after 1960, they deleted data from 1940 on…

Climategate 2.0: The Chronology

The Air Vent;

Buffy Minton who provided the Mime data has produced a spreadsheet of CG1 and CG2 emails in chronological order. This should be an excellent tool to follow conversations through.
odered emails – xls
odered emails – xlsx
I have the emails locally but if you are interested, combine the spreadsheet with this online search engine.

It should prove a useful tool for those major media organizations who recruited their readers to “crowdsource” the Sarah Palin emails.
Related – everything at Climate Depot and Watts Up With That. While I plan to follow developments on a regular basis, these two sites are your best Climategate aggregators.

Climategate 2.0: The Searchable Andrew Revkin

What do you get when you cross the New York Times with a low-rent lefty blog?
You can’t – that’s incest.
Bumped for update on the “Revkin” email search: Rick Morano has been finding and finding and finding…

Revkin is contemplating running with a screwy idea, but Ray Pierrehumbert pulls him back into reality: ‘I think the notion of telling the public to prepare for both global warming and an ice age at the same creates a real public relations problem for us’

Climategate: The Things You’ll Never See At The BBC

Daily Mail;

Britain’s leading green activist research centre spent £15,000 on seminars for top BBC executives in an apparent bid to block climate change sceptics from the airwaves, a vast new cache of leaked ‘Climategate’ emails has revealed.
The emails – part of a trove of more than 5,200 messages that appear to have been stolen from computers at the University of East Anglia – shed light for the first time on an incestuous web of interlocking relationships between BBC journalists and the university’s scientists, which goes back more than a decade.
They show that University staff vetted BBC scripts, used their contacts at the Corporation to stop sceptics being interviewed and were consulted about how the broadcaster should alter its programme output.

Climategate 2.0: The World Bank?

A little imagination goes a long way;

At http://foia2011.org I searched for worldbank.org and found 32 e-mails going back as far as 1998. I have only looked at three so far. Looks like the good old World Bank may be something of a puppet master.
[…]
Long but worth reading. Seems Robert Watson of the World Bank was TELLING good old Rajendra Pachauri and the crowd what to put into the Summary for Policymakers…

Update. Look you silly climate conspiracy nuts – Why on earth would the World Bank want to mess about with climate science?

Climate Change Worse Than Apartheid?

So says Desmond Tutu. What say you?
A snippet:

According to a press release from the Anglican Communion, faith leaders participating in the campaign will reiterate what it termed “scientists’ predictions that that if greenhouse gas emissions are not curbed, by the end of the century average world temperatures will rise between 2 degrees Centigrade and 4 degrees Centigrade, and up to 6 degrees Centigrade in parts of Africa.”

Did these future temperature increase predictions come from the same folks embroiled in Climategate?

Climategate 2.0

Another miracle just happened!

Breaking news: FOIA 2011 has arrived !

This archive contains some 5.000 emails picked from keyword searches. A few remarks and redactions are marked with triple brackets.
/// The IPCC Process ///
<1939> Thorne/MetO:
Observations do not show rising temperatures throughout the tropical
troposphere unless you accept one single study and approach and discount a wealth of others. This is just downright dangerous. We need to communicate the uncertainty and be honest. Phil, hopefully we can find time to discuss these further if necessary […]
<3066> Thorne:
I also think the science is being manipulated to put a political spin on it which for all our sakes might not be too clever in the long run.
<1611> Carter:
It seems that a few people have a very strong say, and no matter how much talking goes on beforehand, the big decisions are made at the eleventh hour by a select core group.
<2884> Wigley:
Mike, The Figure you sent is very deceptive […] there have been a number of dishonest presentations of model results by individual authors and by IPCC […]
<4755> Overpeck:
The trick may be to decide on the main message and use that to guid[e] what’s included and what is left out.

More at the link. and obviously, this is developing… and what is being gleaned already looks to be damning.

What appears to be a new batch of emails and other documents from the University of East Anglia’s Climatic Research Unit has been released.
Contents include more than 5,000 emails and other documents, some relating to work with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).
A similar release in 2009 triggered the “ClimateGate” affair and accusations of fraud that inquiries later dismissed.
Now, as then, the release comes shortly before the annual UN climate summit.
The university has yet to comment on the document cache, which is posted on a Russian server.

Note, the file was released at around 4am this morning, so a lot is still to come out. And there are an additional 220,000 emails that remain behind password protection – for now.

Climategate: The Mann Emails

Dr. David Schnare (WUWT);

Currently public emails show Mann was unable to provide even his close colleagues data he used in some of his papers and could not remember which data sets he used. A query to UVA shows the university, who owns “the data and notebooks resulting from sponsored research,” had no copy of Mann’s logbooks and never gave him permission to take them with him when he left UVA. The university refused to inquire within Mann’s department as to whether anyone there knew whether he even kept a research logbook, so it’s impossible for me to know whether he stole the logbook or just never prepared one in the first place.

Emphasis mine.

Climategate 2.0

Bless you, Judith Curry.

It was hailed as the scientific study that ended the global warming debate once and for all – the research that, in the words of its director, ‘proved you should not be a sceptic, at least not any longer’.
Professor Richard Muller, of Berkeley University in California, and his colleagues from the Berkeley Earth Surface Temperatures project team (BEST) claimed to have shown that the planet has warmed by almost a degree centigrade since 1950 and is warming continually.
Published last week ahead of a major United Nations climate summit in Durban, South Africa, next month, their work was cited around the world as irrefutable evidence that only the most stringent measures to reduce carbon dioxide emissions can save civilisation as we know it.
It was cited uncritically by, among others, reporters and commentators from the BBC, The Independent, The Guardian, The Economist and numerous media outlets in America.
The Washington Post said the BEST study had ‘settled the climate change debate’ and showed that anyone who remained a sceptic was committing a ‘cynical fraud’.
But today The Mail on Sunday can reveal that a leading member of Prof Muller’s team has accused him of trying to mislead the public by hiding the fact that BEST’s research shows global warming has stopped.
Prof Judith Curry, who chairs the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at America’s prestigious Georgia Institute of Technology, said that Prof Muller’s claim that he has proven global warming sceptics wrong was also a ‘huge mistake’, with no scientific basis.
[…]
Prof McKittrick added: ‘The fact is that many of the people who are in a position to provide informed criticism of this work are currently bound by confidentiality agreements.
‘For the Berkeley team to have chosen this particular moment to launch a major international publicity blitz is a highly unethical sabotage of the peer review process.’
In Prof Curry’s view, two of the papers were not ready to be published, in part because they did not properly address the arguments of climate sceptics.
As for the graph disseminated to the media, she said: ‘This is “hide the decline” stuff. Our data show the pause, just as the other sets of data do. Muller is hiding the decline.

(Emphasis mine.) More at WUWT.
Update: Curry responds and clarifies.

A Limousine Liberal Down Under

Limousine Liberals Down Under drive on the left – both literally and philosophically. Here’s multi-millionaire actress, Cate Blanchett, insisting that her fellow Australians pay more taxes to … you know … save the world, save the children, blah, blah, blah:

The most excellent blog, Australian Climate Madness, dissects the new advertising campaign she’s participating in.
It would be most interesting to learn how many more times Ms. Blanchett has traveled on a private jet than the cumulative total of everyone who reads these words.
