horribly wrong …. Should Dr. Henry Morgentaler be awarded the Order of Canada?
Yes – 13% 5109 votes
No – 87% 33841 votes
Or did it? It shouldn’t come as a surprise that even pro-choicers would see the “ick” factor in this. But what of the folks who hand out the Orders?

50/50 at 8:30pm Vancouver Island time. like kate says the ick factor is just too much, even for the grope and flail.
Perhaps we should revisit this fifty years after his death. Even longer, you say?
Why, What for, are they completely without any sense of ethics?
Who next?Robin Sharp for fighting for NAMBLA and their ‘rights? Why not?We are Canadian,we are a liberal society.Isn’t this what our soldiers fought for? Despicable that he would even be nominated.
Meh, they give those things out like candy anyway.
Some fact:
– There is no God.
– There is no such thing as an immaterial human spirit. What we call soul is just the result of the chemical reation inside the brain.
– Life is just a chemical reaction that started on earth 3 billions years ago and ended in human via darwinism.
– The “Life began at conception” is really “some chemical reaction begin at conception”.
– I am not a troll… I am just expressing my thoughts.
quebecois separatiste;
Given that Mr. Morgentaler is a signatory to the Secular Humanist Manifesto why on earth would his supporters suggest ironically that not to give him the Order of Canada would be a BLASPHEMY? (cf the Mop & Pail)
His supporters certainly earn the Canadian black farce award.

quebecois separatiste, you are a moron and a troll. Claiming as “fact” that life is just a chemical reaction that started on earth 3 billion years ago proves you are a moron. There’s not a true scientist anywhere who would claim any of the drivel you just spouted off as being a fact. Speculation, or best guess, would be as far as any scientist would commit. Was it really just a spontaneous chemical reaction, or did it have a trigger? Did it originate on earth, or did it come from beyond earth? There’s no proof to answer any of these questions either way.
Yes there IS a GOD! I happen to work in the ‘social services’ area, that is typically pretty liberal about these things.I was absolutely thrilled,to just now receive an e-mail from my Res.Co-ord.,with numerous forwards from other Gov’t employees with a heads-up about this poll, and link to G&M.Best part was at the end,it had a definite ‘we don’t agree with this’ msg.A huge AMEN to that, and needless to say,it has been sent to all in my contacts list.
So quebecois, if somebody stops your “chemical reaction” with a louisville slugger on Friday night outside the local tavern, that’s ok then?
Go back to Rabble, will you? This is too easy.
I like what Robert A Heinlein said, “Life is more than a bunch of amino acids bumping together”.
Kate, Morgentaler’s work has saved the lives of a lot of Canadian women. Thanks in part to him, we don’t have backstreet abortions in this country anymore. Morgentaler’s work has also done much to advance individual freedom and individual choice for Canadian women. It is for these reasons that I genuinely support the idea of Morgentaler being awarded the Order of Canada.
Children with fingers, toes, ears and eyes are routinly murdered and Clifford Olsen lives.
Ugly, ugly Strange Brew
Separate frog, you are the most hilarious self-parody I have ever encountered! LOOOL!
“pass me ze gauloise, life eeez sheeet! Here, ‘ave another Pernod, merde! I spit on you!”
I pity you.
I cannot conceive, nor carry a child for nine months. So I don’t feel I nor anyone else should force a woman to, if SHE doesn’t want to. Whatever the circumstances. God will have his/her say.
I didn’t used to feel this way: Life at conception, she made her bed (with HELP)now lie in it….and all that.
A mother is soley responsible for the rearing of her OFSPRING. Let her decide when and where to procreate. Some males these days seem content to spread their seed all over the place, leaving the mother alone to deal with the pregnancy.
There was a time when the solution involved backroom butchers and consequently haemorrage and death. That is abominable in my opinion.
Abortion is bad news, sure I’ll agree. But Morgantaler pushed for a solution, and I eventually agreed, it was the best answer to a very nasty, and divisive issue. Not everyone is happy.
Not their buisness, in my opinion
But Order of Canada, is a bit rich.
John Murney,
if a woman is full term and is about to go into labour and the baby’s considered to be fully healthy,
and instead of starting to push, the mother asks the doctor to take the baby’s life,
do you support that decision, and if not, why not?
In Canada the woman’s right of “choice” includes taking that babies life. After all, we have no laws restricting abortion whatsoever.
Working backwards, what point do you say it’s ok to take the baby’s life (notice how the debate is never framed by working backwards, its so much more clinical thinking of things in terms of a cluster of cells, but when the “choice” is dismembering a full healthy baby with its whole life ahead of it, its not so clinical is it? Nor is it as easy to draw a cut off point of acceptability when one works backwards?)
Don’t worry John, I don’t expect you to answer. Most pro “choice” advocates prefer to simply pretend such messy facts don’t exist.
It’s a “choice”, and “choosing” is an inherently good thing, you know, like being able to “choose” to vote, or “choose” to buy chocolate ice cream on a Sunday afternoon. By all means lets keep the debate focused on positive words such as “choice”, without ever really discussing in any detail what that choice is.
After all, “a woman’s right to kill her unborn child” just sounds so….well….distateful.
A woman’s “right to choose”. Ahhhh, music to our ears. That’s better.
It’s an interesting society we have where I could go to jail if I “choose” to “terminate” the life of my neighbor’s cat for shitting in my garden, but we openly advocate for a woman’s right to “choose” to take the life of a baby that can be within seconds from birth.
I would wager that other than a few feminazis most pro-abortionists are male. I say male instead of men, since for them they see state funded abortion at any term as a means to continue using women as sex objects without having to accept any responsibility. Therefore I also wager that a majority of women undergoing abortions are forced or pressured into them.
This is not pro women but anti women and often has serious health consequences for women who have received abortions. Abortion is clearly a health risk to the woman. Nor is this about the woman’s body, since the unborn child is not part of her body. Furthermore the woman always has the option of giving the baby up for adoption, so much for the claim that society is forcing her to raise an unwanted child.
The bottom line is that this is a death cult where death (as long as it is another’s) is held sacred instead of life.
quebecois: What you state as ‘facts’ are your beliefs. Facts are self-evident; what you say is not.
As for Morgentaler, the fact he is up for the OOC says how morally bankrupt our society, and especially our so-called elites, have become. The poll results seem to indicate most average Joes and Janes still cringe at the thought, but I’ll bet Morgentaler will get his OOC long before Don Cherry does. It’s hard to think of someone more deserving than Grapes, but he committed the cardinal sin of political incorrectness. To our liberal luminaries that’s a worse crime than murdering the unborn.
[Deleted. Cut it out with the personal insults. ED]
Quebecois; I suspect you were looking for a reaction, and got one! I also suspect those aren’t your true beliefs.
I got lucky on this poll and got in my vote.
NOTICE: There are already blogs dedicated to the abortion debate, so if you’re thinking in indulging in that go elsewhere, please. Otherwise, stay on topic. Meaning: Morgentaler – Order of Canada.
I’m with the ick factor.
No matter what side of the fence your on, this is a bit too much.
alain..”Nor is this about the woman’s body, since the unborn child is not part of her body”???
sorry kate, but this requires WTF!?
Biff, a baby is not a baby until it is born; it is a foetus.
The unborn do not have rights, and nor should they. The unborn, the dead and the undead do not take precedence over the living.
If you aren’t sure who the undead are, the following link will sort that out!

Never let it be said that I am without a sense of humour!
I think celebrating the genocide of the voiceless Canadian citizens, is just a bit too much for most Canadians.
“Should Dr. Henry Morgentaler be awarded the Order of Canada?”
No.

“So with a little number crunching and research I figured that by plopping down $1,200 for the vasectomy, and assuming I would have had the 2.08 children that is the US average, I would save about $577,000 (or $945,000 if I was stupid enough to pay for my 2.08 childrens’ way through college). This translates into a whopping total Return on Investment (ROI) of 48,177% (or 78,762%, respectively).”

Not one statement here is an established “fact”; it is all opinion – some of it based on well developed scientific theories – but it is opinion nonetheless.
Including the “I am not a troll” statement.
The panel will also have to consider how many Orders will be returned should this go through. Quite alot from the people awarded them for genuine community service, not done for (extra-billingI) profit.
Looks like Colby Cosh is on the bong:
“This is where we are. This is what we wanted, whether we admit it to ourselves or not. And this is as it should be, with the final decision in the hands of the one who must chance the hazards and agony of birth. Long live Morgentaler! Long live anarchy!”

If they give Morganthaler a medal, they have to award one to Clifford Olson too…they were both in the same racket…a death cult…but Morgantaler’s was sanctioned by a professional body.
It is a pretty uncomfortable position since celebrating choice in this case also means celebrating abortion (the death of a fetus/baby). Celebrating choice for women in the form of birth control options I can see. But abortion is a tragedy for all concerned, including the woman. It may be necessary to avoid worse tragedies but it is not a positive human action. I vote no for the OOC. Feminist and pro choice organizations should and do give him recognition he deserves.
WL Mackenzie Redux, I’d bet on OC for Morgentaler if he’s still alive when the Liberals return to power. Clifford Olson is more likely to have an airport renamed in his honour (again, under the next Liberal government): Watch for Olson-Robinson Vancouver International. Actually, if it co-honours Svend, that should probably be “Internationale.”
“Watch for Olson-Robinson Vancouver International. Actually, if it co-honours Svend, that should probably be ‘Internationale.'”
If Svend is involved, presumably Birks or Peoples Jewellers will not be in a hurry to set up a duty-free shop there.
Before Morgenthaler gets the Order I would like to see the many, many doctors who perform miracles saving lives every day get the Order. I want to see doctors in virtually every other specialty of medicine get the Order before this butcher gets one. And as to Separatist’s contention that the soul is but a “chemical reaction” in the brain, it becomes clear as to why he would think that way. In order to experience that “chemical reaction” one would have to have a brain to start out with.
There are hundreds, perhaps thousands of people more deserving than Morgenthaler, thought he does have the proper connections.
“For his outstanding work in contributing to the deaths of 3 million Canadians . . . ”
Hey, I know a guy who pulled an old lady out of a burning car one time. He did get a medal, but he didn’t get the Order of Canada. Morgentaler opened a bunch of clinics and made a bunch of money. Why does that rate the OOC?
He’s upheld one of the sacraments of Liberal politics is why. The ‘tards pushing this think that’s what the Order of Canada is for, service to the Liberal Party.
I think they should re-award it to a racist Indian chief sooner than Morgentaler. Let him go drag an old lady out of a burning car, then we’ll talk.
I would argue with you on very many fronts John Murney, but out of respect to Kate I will keep on topic. I hope the ‘Order’ people get their heads on straight, or they will be further demeaning the honour of the Order of Canada.
Accoring to Kate’s prediction poll we are quite pessimistic aren’t we?
I am presently a post menopausal woman. It is a stage of human life. I was formerly:
a child bearing women
a newlywed
a teenager
a teenybopper
a young school girl
a preschooler
a toddler
an newborn infant
a foetus
an embryo
I say give it to him. He’d be in good company.
Although if they ever offered me one I’d go postal on them for the insult.\
I’d say the order of Canada is like the Nobel Peace prize. After Terrorists (arafat) and their supporter (al baredei and Carter) and the “throw-deniers-in-jail” crowd (environazis) I’d say the Nobel is dead. Given who they’ve given the OoC to I’d say the same there.
the order of canada. zero prestige, zero value.
I think they should give the Order of Canada to Me, Mom and Morgentaler.
So you feminists are all happy that a lot more female babies are ‘unwanted’ than male babies?
And you always argue that men have no say in the matter, but aren’t male babies of concern to us as well?
Pregnant women HAD the choice – have unprotected sex or not.
“the order of canada. zero prestige, zero value.”
And don’t forget, un-pc statement, and they take it back!
Hey, if Morgentaler gets one, shouldn’t Aqsa Pervez’s Dad get one too? He also thought it was the honourable thing to do.
On a side note, the Illinois Senate had a vote on what constitutes a human being with regards to abortion. They voted on the matter – if a late term abortion doesn’t take and the baby is instead born, can it then be killed, even though it’s alive outside of the womb?
Senator Obama voted yes.
In my opinion, it’s unmistakable, Obama supports murder. This disturbing fact was on Glen Beck last night. I’m sure it will be trumpeted, as it should, during the election.
The posters on this blog are some of the cleverest and most thought-provoking people that I have ever read and I usually enjoy the debates. Yet on subjects like this so many of you show how narrow-minded and vindictive you really are. No different than the rabble blog. Any one who dares challenge your opinion on Morgentaler is instantly the epitome of evil and can and must be called every name you can think of and be castigated thoroughly.
As noted Morgentaler allowed women, especially poor unwed ones as the author of Freakonomics detailed, a safe site to have a LEGAL medical procedure instead of a back alley. IMO he did this at great personel cost to himself as your vicious comments show and to continue it took real courage. Trying to link him with Olsen as WLR did is beyond stupid or he is in it for the money.
Adoption homes are full of unwanted children that are not in the desired category. How would any of you like to carry the child of a rape to term?
I agree that those not having an Order of Canada will shortly be in a minority group but I still voted for Morgentaler to get one.
my my Dave , how soon we forget, remember Clifford Olsen was paid. He was paid to locate bodies as a cost saving measure. He like Karla Homolka —“cut a deal”
To award the Order of Canada to Morgentaler would be offensive in the extreme for a large portion of the population. I don’t think the award should be used to make political statements. This would seriously devalue what this honour means for many Canadians. (Maybe thats would be the plan.)
I can’t remember who said it first but there was a good one by someone.
It went “the day that scientists find a gene identifying homosexuality is the day all homosexuals are pro-life.”
Or something like that.
I doubt there’s a gene for it but who knows. The line was a good one anyway.
no worries on that warwick.
http://www.mygenes.co.nz/summary.htm
stats say no. evolution would be agin it as well.
The Order of Canada should go to those persons who’s actions demonstrate the best virtues that Canadian’s have to offer. Leaders who show us the way that we should act. The vary nature of an award of this kind is to affirm the values that we hold in consensus and can all cleave to.
Awarding it *is* a subjective moral value judgement.
That person is extremely divisive. There is no consensus. To many he is a heroic leader. To many others he is gleaning a living off of others’ misery by killing helpless innocents.
As long as a significant majority of Canadians cannot describe his actions as demonstrations of virtue the order should not be offered.
